I formed my first band in the late 80's, and have always fancied myself a solid player and a decent "box formula" soloist. This vid is the missing link, MANY light bulb moments. You're the best, Sped! thanks you for doing what you do... And thanks for the gear rundown.

Wow, just wow at your lessons and talent. I started playing as a young teenager back in the 1980s, and from what I understand I have quite a good collection of guitars. Played in a rock band in the 90s back in college and it was a blast!.... and then life happened. They tell me my 1981 white Les Paul custom that has aged to yellow is worth much more than I paid. I'm not selling. I'm playing. Same for my 1980 something stratocaster. Thank you Sped. Loving my guitars again. I forgot how good I was at this. Nice to get a good mentor on youtube to bring me back up to speed! Or possibly even up to ....Sped. Ha! I'm working on it.

@chrisstevens46804 жыл бұрын
Sped Spedding .....Ditto, both wrists. Did you have a method for reducing or fixing the RSI or was it just time? I still have problems. I was at a night club when AC/DC came on. I ran down the stairs and jumped onto the dance floor that was covered in beer. Both my feet shot out in front of me, I landed on my arse with both arms locked straight to break my fall and the shock went straight up both arms. Now the internet is properly here I can adopt a much better learning approach. Cheers for your efforts! PS I bought myself some new ‘kit’ for the PC: Reaper DAW and EZ Drummer 2 (oh the drums!) + you could give everyone out there a heads up on ‘Transcribe’, (what a brilliant tool for learning solos and practicing things slowed down). You could also get an affiliate kick back off providing the links (definitely from Transcribe).

Excellent lesson, thank you! I'm a little confused as all I have learned is the pentatonic scale. I understood the first lick, as it looked like you started in what I would call box 5, then continued through 1-4. I think I understood the 2nd lick too. The natural minor has 2 notes removed so you get the pentatonic minor? So are you supposed to move between the pentatonic minor and natural minor (in the same box) or do you generally move between the pentatonic minor and major pentatonic? I guess I'm wondering why as beginners we learn the pentatonic box and not start with the natural minor boxes and just learn to remove the 2 notes. Hope that make sense?
@SpedSpedding4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian! Thanks for your comment. Yeah, I start the first lick in box 5 and make my way through 1-4. The Natural Minor lick has two extra notes in it; major 2nd and Minor 6th, or you could say that the Pentatonic Minor has 2 less. And you're right, not every single shape in the second lick was all Natural Minor, some of them were just Pentatonic again. If we were improvising within the same box in C Minor or any minor key, I wouldn't mix the Major Pentatonic in there. The Major 3rd 6th and 7th would clash and sound out. I would use the Natrual Minor shape though, it overlays the same box shape (if that makes sense) as you probably know. I think as beginners it's important to start small/manageable; something like the Pentatonic Scale is easy to remember and sounds cool. It's boxy, as we say. Also, with the added semitones in the Natural Minor there is more room for questionable resolutions when improvising, and semitone clashes if that makes sense?
@brianmckenzie13184 жыл бұрын
@@SpedSpedding Thank you so much for the reply and clarification!!! Truly appreciated! I understand moving the boxes around on the fretboard, but I really think I need to just sit down and learn the notes on the fretboard and it all will make more sense. Appreciate the tip on overlaying the natural minor on the minor shape! Makes sense. I get confused when I've see people going between major and minor, using the same box (with the 3 fret rule) or overlaying box 2 over box 1 (for example). You rock dude, thank you!!! \w/
