One simple hack I use to bring down my phone time: I was always grabbing my phone to jot down reminders, or look stuff up I was thinking or talking about. I've recently taken to carrying a small notebook and pen in my pocket, and whenever there's something I need to remember or look up, I write it down on the notebook. Then later I can look it up when there's an appropriate time, preferably using a laptop over a phone. This little change has instantly drastically reduced both my phone screen time and the number of useless things I look up but will never use, which is a waste of time and cognitive resources.

The most important point is understanding that the "techniques" explained here are really simple, basic, daily functions that we've lost due to the distractions, it's really easy to enhance oneself, thanks for the episode.

I am listening to this on the side as I am doing household chores, and while I greatly enjoy the content, it made me think that maybe I should not try to fill every minute of my life with content because I also need the downtime and switch into the default mode network.

4:15 YES. As someone who majored in psycholinguistics and cognitive sciences, the best attachment specialist (and one of the rare ones with an actual degree in psychology) I've found talks about patterns and how to get rid of old and create new patterns. Ofc, understanding the actual problem and where it came from is important too, but there's not gonna be much or any changes without crrating new patterns

Excellent, timely I needed this. The phone stays downstairs tonight, and a pen and notebook will be placed by my bed. I am finishing my glass of water tomorrow morning and taking full advantage of that magical first 40 minutes. All with no pressure. Thank you both.

what if one doesn't care to be "good enough" or "good enough yet", if there is no incentive to be that? If there is no feeling for a need to be enough? Because it has never had the opportunity to develop due to constantly being told/shown/reminded that one is not enough? Or rather that this need to be enough is not there anymore?

This is a good, useful conversation, I think I need to listen to this a few times to get through it better. But at points it just makes me irritated: yeah, the hell I can do this with my work and general life schedule. And with the climate I live in too. No wonder I'm not my 100% (but that's not news to me).

Can you explain the difference mechanistically between a physiological sigh and a yawn? Yawning is a highly conserved homeostatic response to not just fatigue, but also stress and nervousness. Animals yawn when anxious, as do children. Adults could do it too if they’re not suppressing it for social etiquette. I suspect that the physiological sigh described here would even induce yawning. I just find it weird that someone’s trying to take credit for creating a breathing exercise that our bodies already do naturally in the same circumstances.

I was all ears at the part about "the first 8 hours after we wake up". I tend to wake up early, between 5pm and 6:30pm latest. I can FEEL that 8 hour mark hit, and even a lunchtime walk can't get my brain back to "morning mode", which is really hard to deal with in my job which needs loads of brainpower (I'm a senior IT person). I have always tried to do the heavy thinking early in the day, but meeting schedules often don't allow. 4-6pm I tend to call "the negative work zone" where I can easily do more harm than good, and actually go backwards. In virtually every case, I'll solve the problem in a very short time the next morning. I keep on mentioning this to other people - to varying degrees of sympathy!! I would love there to be some sort of effective hack to get over this, because I'd rather like to have more "go" to do creative and interesting stuff off my own after work. As it is, I can usually just about force myself to do housework or cooking, but even that's really tiring. (If I try to do creative stuff before work, which I used to do, I end up in a foul mood when I have to cut it short to start work...)

You both are absolute miracles of life ! The way that you all speak about the operation, is in your own perspective to which you had learned from the education to which you have received, also you all sound like you are imagining an actual physical image when you say some of the words that I do not know the definition of, I do know what neurons are, and that neurons are processed by the neurotransmitters, when a neuropath is created, and you want to strengthen the brain stems to have better memory, and a better brain operation. I completely agree with you all about getting proper exercise to build the brain also . The brain can flex so many muscles in the Cyrus gyrus, in order to collect a lot of the mala nutrients nutrients needed, unfortunately, the reason why I have not gained the muscles like I want, is not because I do not get exercise, yet because I have conditions that prevent me, but I fight through it regardless. I choose the power of nature, because GOD IS THE BEST DOCTOR ON IN ALL OF THE OMNIVERSE, so I literally skipped ALL brain surgery and after care appointments , EVEN WHEN HAVING AN INDENTION AND BREAKING MY SKULL , THUS FOR I AM ALL IN 100% OF NATURE, I BELIEVE THE CHEMICALS THAT THEY CREATE IN THE SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY IS A PART OF THE CFCS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, AND UNNATURAL THINGS MAKE RESULTS , I WANT TO RECOMMEND YOU ALL TO SAY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGULAR BRAIN FUNCTION AND A PERSON WITH ALTERNATE PERSONALITIES , HAVE YOU ALL EVER SEEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO OPERATIONS? JUST ASKING BECAUSE THAT IS AN INTERESTING SUBJECT, ANYWAY, IF YOU ALL WANT TO LEARN EDUCATION THE FUN WAY, YOU SHOULD LOOK AT MY KZbin CHANNEL SEARCH KZbin PROFESSOR CYGNUS SING ALONG SONGS . SEARCH KZbin PROFESSOR CYGNUS BRAIN ANATOMY SONG THAT COMES WITH A FREE SCREEN-PHOTO PUZZLE OF THE BRAIN !

There is just one tactic I use that works. Just have all of the essential stuff like WhatsApp and download the essential video lectures. Turn off the wifi and power off the phone. Carry a flip flop for calls. Do this every day for the majority of the day and use your laptop for essential stuff.

I agree with you Dr Karan. Whole food plant based diet without salt, oil or sugar (sos). Thank you for mentioning that. Can get overlooked. Heart, brain and little brain 🍆 need a healthy diet. Exercise, sleep, stress, social, all important too but diet is important. Eating animal products and processed food is a lost opportunity to eat healthy plant based. Dr Karan have you read How Not To Die by Dr Michael Greger? Highly recommended. Again thanks for mentioning the fibre.

Is there any way to preserve some brainpower for later in the day? I work early (6am-230pm) so I don't really get time before work, and after work I have homework and exercise and laundry to do, but after a 3pm nap all of my desire to do those things plummets 🫠 Executive function is out the window, then I can't resist staying up late, then I have less sleep and the whole cycle perpetuates itself
@naomid1848

I'm no expert but it seems like the simplest thing to focus on first is setting a consistent time to go to bed/ getting enough hours of sleep. Then seeing how that impacts your energy levels and ability to get stuff done during the day, and then think about making other changes?
