If you noticed at the beginning of the episode, Jessie has a great appreciation for animals and kids, he was watching that beetle with so much fascination while someone else would have just killed it. Its a great foreshadow for the episode and how it shows what a caring person Jessie is.

same. jesse actually has such a heart, i feel like jesse cares a lot for thingd that are small and vulnerable, he doesn’t want to hurt them. the scene where jesse finds a bug , it happens again in el camino, and i wait for him to kill it but he picks it up and almost cradles it, it’s like he sees it’s small and vulnerable and immediately wants to care of it or not hurt it. i see this with brock, with the kid in this episode. he is a person that doesn’t wanna hurt other people, that’s why he was crying as he killed gale.

It makes me feel like Jesse's situation is largely his parents fault. Like, if they helped him get back onto solid ground instead of continuously knocking him down, he might be able to recover from his drug addiction and turn his life around. He's not a con, so he might still be able to get a decent job too. I just feel really bad for him, because he has a good heart, but he has made some bad decisions, which he's suffering from.

The first time I had one, I was close to my Drs. Office. So I walked in. Immediately they thought I was having a heart attack. And even though the doctor figured out it was a panic attack, she still sent me for a stress test (A test on my heart). So it is very plausable to think it was a heart attack.

tama yeager gibson - The first time I had one I went to this tiny crappy ER (my aunt drove me). There was only 3 people on duty This nurse/doctor lady kept telling me to calm down or she wouldn’t be able to help! I looked at my aunt and said “we gotta fucking go!”. She drove me to a large St. John’s and they were great, and yeah I had to get a stress test as well. I was scared shitless!

Sadly, as a social worker turned lawyer I have seen far too many cases with all of these elements. It's much more realistic than I imagine a lot of people realize. The vast majority of my cases, both CPS and criminal, had to do with drugs in one way or another. Most of the homicides, too, are either gang on gang or addicts killing each other or someone else to get money or drugs. And so many kids removed from the home of addicts either because a parent died or got arrested or just neglected them. It's a sad world.

It might be a stretch but I love how in the previous episode Hank talks about someones first instinct when they see a bug crawl out is to squash it. However, in the beginning of this episode, we see Jesse playing with a bug and smiling almost as if he were a little kid. That and the fact that he saves the kids life really shows his compassion and proves that he isn't cut out to be the hardened criminal he tries to imitate in this episode. I'm loving these BB reactions guys, keep up the good work!

@@RoyKoopaling Agreed, though I'll refrain from getting overtly political here. Yes, at the macro level the federal gov't is responsible for the failed "War on Drugs", and funding border enforcement. Local gov't is responsible for law enforcement & child protections via agencies on a micro level. But the "government", be it fed, state, or local isn't some seperate, alternate, largely faceless entity we can hold responsible; the government IS us. It is comprised of citizens and serves as an expression of OUR political will. For too long we have failed to take on the burden of addressing these matters, to engage in gov't at any level, to serve personally, or to even inform ourselves at a basic level. We don't get to farm out fault on "government". We create, foster, build, and elect government; by refusing to participate in every election, be they general, midterm, local, special, etc. we get what we've got. Americans are innovative & ingenious problem-solvers; we have the resources and capability to improve if not manage all of this. That we haven't indicates our lack of will, education, & engagement. Thus we fail in our responsibilities as voters, preferring instead to coldly observe these horrific circumstances like entertainment-seeking visitors perusing a zoo. Until we demand gov't address this at every level, nothing will change.

@Kent Goertzen Bingo. Wouldn't it make more sense to have some level of government handled healthcare to prevent a lot of this in the first place? I'd rather my tax dollars provided everyone with that stuff rather than funding endless failed drug wars, putting mentally/physically ill folks in cages, and the messy mop up of collateral family/societal damage. The producers of the show at some point needed to show the dark side, end result of drug use...the real nitty-gritty shit. They would have been criticized for glamorizing drugs if all they ever showed was Jesse and Walt's RV antics and racking up "fat stacks". Jessie, being a drug user, has likely seen this before but that house was a wreck (kudos to the set designer and crew that set up in the interior of the home); it's too bad Walt didn't see it so he could understand how his product destroys lives. But maybe it wouldn't have fazed Walt at all now, because he seems to have crossed a line. I'll always remember this episode for that sweet, innocent kid.

@Petty Realist It doesn't have to be that way, though. Some programs have an 80% success rate, so... I'm not sure where you sourced your statistics, but I'm sure they are probably close enough. I only mention it, because opiates have the physical addiction, element to it. Which makes getting away from them even harder than meth. The whole system of addiction has a gravity to it that is hard to escape. You don't even need to be using an actual substance to be an addict (gambling, sex, over eating, etc) Those addictions are just as powerful. But, with opiates if you quit without the proper medication, you actually become very sick. My point, I guess is a lot of what people believe about addiction is old information. Also, you cannot cure addiction you can only treat it. It's a genetic disease, triggered by environment, and/or onset of other mental issues. You can be an untriggered addict and not even know it, or show it. Many people, actually use all these drugs, while showing no addiction. But they will quit using when they see unacceptable harm being done to their health and lifestyle. An addict (triggered) will continue using irrationally, sometimes even without feeling any benefit. The point of treatment is to spend as much time as possible in recovery status (sober), this is where your body and mind is constantly improving. The feeling you get while in recovery, especially after being actively addicted for a long time, is like a drink of water on a hot day. So, maybe that 90% you wrote about is representing the people who relapse the first time they attempt treatment. Sliding back down is easy and standing back up is hard. But the longer you are in recovery, the more likely you are to maintain that status. So treatment needs to be way more accessible. Some places getting treatment is very difficult because of old out dated, ideas, and beliefs. I'll stop writing now. I'm sorry for writing an essay, but maybe it will lead to someone getting help (we can always hope). I hope you have a wonderful day.

Yeah Nikki, that’s Breaking Bad for ya. First season you guys were constantly upset by being introduced to the harsh realities of a family battling cancer, then the scope of the show got bigger with season 2 and you’re now being introduced to the harsh realities of the drug world. Breaking Bad is a depressing journey with ups and downs, but definitely worth the watch. It’s a top 3 drama ever along side Game of Thrones and The Wire. 👶🚔🚔

I think it's wrong to describe the show as depressing. I would say it has depressing moments. It also has highly stressful, suspenseful moments. It has very funny moments. It definitely has very dramatic moments. But my favorite moments were those Breaking Bad moments, like the ones that book ended season 4.

My ex girlfriend had a panic attack once. She was hyperventilating, crying, and could not be consoled. She was under a lot of specific stress in that situation and at first I really felt helpless, because nothing I tried to help her ease up, seemed to work. So I asked Dr. Google what to do, and he said distraction is the most important thing. Going for a walk for example. So I simply took her by the hand and said: "We are going for a walk up the hill now, that will take your mind off things." And lo and behold it worked. Just some fresh air, having to concentrate on one step after the other, really solved the situation.

Yes! Another coping skill (if you cant go for a walk), is to start discribing and naming things around you. Again, distraction. Just as basic as "yellow cup. Black cell phone. Blue curtains. Whatever is in your environment. Sounds stupid I know. But seems to be what works for me.

A lot more common than 99% of people will ever realize....Behind many brilliant ideas, inventions, and patents is a genius who got the short end of the stick, or in many cases even nothing at all, while those who stole it from them and took credit made a fortune...There are many stories of famous inventors, artists, and business people, and other professions you'd assume, who really borrowed (or stole) the concept of someone else, history gives the true person very little credit, and the now famous person for it gets all the accolades....Badfinger (just a relevant example) got credit for their musical genius, but their manager ripped them off of millions of dollars, and the two main band members committed suicide very young, at least partially due to that robbery.

@@ghenry4513 I worked for a company many years back, who had invent some equipment. I was trained how to use it. But when i worked on my own, i used it in a different manner. And increased production by 300%! The owner asked me what I was doing. I asked to be compensated. He refused and fired me. And sued me! I counter sued for qrongful termination. I won! The judge reinstated me. But I no longer wanted to work for the guy. But the only reason I won is because the method was not patentable! Like you can patent a fragrance recipe but not the scent. For example. So if it was something that could be patented, I would have had to tell the owner, and the owner would not have to compensate me at all! So basically, a company OWNS you and your "intellectual property "! I think this is just one of many laws bias towards corporations against the little guy. Walt has every reason to be angry! And it a very real example of teue life situations.

@@wordswritteninred7171 That's a very organic story and experience, and absolutely true to life....Walt's experience is one of the most real-life depictions of how such things work, in its own nuanced way specific to his life and story....But yes, each of these examples is very realistic and how the world really works....And I absolutely side with Walt in this matter in terms of what they did and how he feels, even though I may not agree with his decisions in the meth business (and arguably not to take the money, but I understand how that must have felt with Skyler persuading them into charity, effecting his ego based on the history they shared). From a corporate perspective, it is right for him to consider himself a victim, especially because they never reached out and gave him his due worth and credit, but estranged themselves from him further as they grew (for the most part) and never looked back, but acted as if he didn't exist and had nothing to do with their riches... It shows their true greedy and selfish character (and almost as if they have a personal void with themselves in terms of their talent in chemistry...like, for example, by acting as if they came up with Walt's ideas and contributions, to the world they are seen as the successes, the heroes, and the geniuses, while refusing to publicly recognize that they may not be "as" successful as they are without his contributions....They basically slighted him publicly but are taking the credit from people for his work)...The right thing for them to do would be to publicly acknowledge that they wouldn't be where they are (as successful as they are in that regard/area of their business) without their friend Walter White..... But I think that doing so would draw public demand for them to compensate him more when the public finds out he's an underpaid high school teacher who lives a comparatively modest life....To do that would mean they lose their current public identity as the geniuses, originators, and heroes....and they don't want to give up that public persona...That public persona is what is filling their "void" of talent they know they don't have that Walt truly has.... Obviously, it is more complicated than that (a gray matter) since Gretchen has feelings and emotions involved from dating Walt, and the details of how it played out when he left the party... Congratulations by the way! Glad you won that!

@@ghenry4513 this is the most sympathetic confusing thing about Walt: the way I understood it, while discovering the way to make millions, a love triangle developed, Walt lost, and his pride refused to let him hang around as a third wheel, so he split on bad terms and the couple never reached out to acknowledge him, or even give him money he made for them except as a charity case. that would make his partners greedy vindictive loathsome assholes, but I felt this wasn't explored enough...I WANTED MORE DETAILS

Go back to episode one. When Walt is doing his step exercises in the morning. Look at the plaque he is looking at on the wall. Now we know that Gray Matter is built on Walts research. He is fed up. And angry. Must feel cheated. And now, facing death. And must choose between fighting cancer and leaving his family in debt. Or just giving in. Or accepting money from the very people who stole his possible life. And actually living a grand life, off his accomplishments. So yeah, no longer gives a fuck. This elisode, for me, was sooko revealing! As to how Walt got to this place. And it reveals who Jesse is! His kindness. His bravery. And who he truly is at heart. This is probably when I fell in love with the character Jesse. His care and concern for the kid, shows who Jesse really is. Peace oh i forgot! Baby face and police. And atm! Lol

Walt probably made a legal deal/buyout/ect from Grey Matter, but still that was his friend (Elliot) and former girlfriend (Gretchen). They are super RICH now largely off Walt's ideas & work... ALL these years later and they never thought about repaying Walt or trying to make it right somehow... How mad would you be IF Bill & Melinda Gates built Microsoft off your ideas & work, then never tried to make it right with you????

He was passive and let it go....A nice big "tell them off" experience years ago might have helped and got him over it, but his passivity along with now realizing he may die soon of cancer has made him realize he needs closure on it and to get it off his chest when this opportunity kept presenting itself and they came back into his life....

And it would have been received differently. Remember how he felt about the job offer? At first he was all for it. Was revealing about his health issues in an attempt at being forth right about his illness. And in doing so, he finds out that his wife had already told them. So the job offer was also just charity. And there qill be more to come about this topic. But I dont want to give any spoilers. But for me, this was very revealing of where Walt was coming from.

I don't know. It's not that they pushed him out. If they had they would already be on no speaking terms. He left. He made a bad decision. I can't see where it is their responsibility to share. And lets not forget that they themselves came up with the idea of paying for his treatment as a way of giving him a share of riches made off his ideas. He declined, because he was too fucking proud. He should be angry with himself not them.

I love this episode. It's the first really big Jesse episode and gives us a good look at what kind of person he really is. From him having to put on an act to rob those 2 addicts and especially how he interacted with that poor kid. Jesse is definitely not suited to be a drug lord. He's too good of a person, despite what he thinks of himself. Walt was so proud of himself for selling Skyler his lie. His problem though is he has to realize that sometimes less is more. He talks to much when he lies. It makes him sound panicky and shows no confidence in what he's saying. Lying is like anything else, you have to do it with confidence. The progression of Walter as Heisenberg is one of the more interesting parts of the show. It seemed like it was a persona he created for the drug world he was entering. But when you see it come out in other parts of his life it definitely makes you think there's more to it than that. That it's not so much a persona but really all his repressed anger coming out. 👶🚓

And as much as I don't like Jesse, him caring for a neglected child was beautiful. It just broke my heart seeing that little boy all dirty and hungry. I love the discussion beforehand with your intelligent predictions and questions on what is going to happen next based on what happened last time.. I didn't watch it with anyone the first time through and I always imbibed while I watched so my ability to follow and process and analyze what was going on was diminished. LoL. It took me a second and a third watch through the series to follow the more nuanced story arcs.. maybe even more watches to pick up on all the little nuances... it gets more and more complex, in the last two seasons, there is more subversion, more surprises.. It'll get better!

Former CPS/foster care worker here. Sad reality: we took dozens of kids out of drug houses over the years. 95% of the time they screamed, fought, & begged to go home. No matter what, most kids are hardwired to want their own parents. Heartbreaking. Sadder reality: lack of viable foster placements is a problem in every state. This sort of kid would enter a system that might be better in terms of meeting his basic needs for food, clothing, shelter, & school but the emotional damage will remain largely unconsidered & untreated. He didn't speak, react, or make eye contact much because he's been deprived of essential nurture. Chances this kind of kid grows up to become an addict/abuser himself are insanely high. Broken system.

Robin Melendez I have 3 friends that fostered and then wound up adopting. But what a road they had to travel! 2 of the 3 children were born addicted (1 to meth, the other not sure) and had to go through withdrawals straight from the womb. The thing that I really don’t understand is how they put the mother’s ‘rights’ above the child’s needs. In all three cases the mother claimed she would get her act together. Occasionally showing up for scheduled visits, sometimes high. More often then not they wouldn’t even show up and make some lame excuse, despite the fact the Social Services would pay for transportation. The children would be dragged in and out of court for years before adoption was finalized, all because the mother has ‘rights’. One of the kids was 5 at the time, such a sweet little girl. She just wanted her mommy. Her little heart would break when she would go for visitation and her mom would be a no show. You could literally see her little heart break. I’m sure you’ve seen it too. It’s been 5 years since that adoption and the little girl still misses her mom every though it’s been that long since she’s had any contact with her. So sad that the children’s ‘rights’ are not put first. Sometimes the biological parents aren’t the right parents. If you fuck up once, you should lose your kids. That’s my thoughts anyway. Thank you for doing your part to help those poor children.

@@mamabrowsss1160 Taking kids to court-mandated visits was one of the most painful & cringey parts of the job. So often parents would no-show, fail a last minute drug test, or get themselves re-arrested. When they did show it felt great but the clock was always ticking toward the inevitable separation once again. Probably the hardest thing was 1. separating siblings 2. informing kids that seperation would be permanent (due to award of long prison sentences, parents MIA/dead, or parents totally surrending all forms of custody to the state) or 3. having a kid attempt or achieve suicide. Across the years I saw the same kids over and over, same parents losing/regaining custody, having more kids. Grinds you down; once my own kids were born I couldn't take it anymore. Every case wore my own children's faces; every horror I'd seen I unreasonably imagined for them. Your friends gave the noblest, most selfless gift of all. Sometimes a single positive person, opportunity, or moment is all it takes to change everything for a child. Deep down all kids, even the hardest, want to be good, productive, & capable of love. Takes heavy sacrifice & endless care to unlock the "better angels" but to grant another person a whole life? Worth it. Bless them. The positive effects of this effort can ripple out into vast numbers of people, far into unknown worlds, and down the generations. I've seen it.

As a long time sufferer of paralyzing panic attacks, I immediately recognized what he was going through. Feeling like an elephant is sitting on your chest, heart pounding, & the feeling of the world closing in & crushing you. Not a pleasant experience for sure. It's called a panic attack, but it rarely has anything to do with panicking, (in my case anyway), sometimes it'll hit me for no obvious reason at all. FYI: "The Pot" helps quite a bit...😉 Just thought I'd share my experience with it, hope it helps your understanding...Ok, back to the vid! 😁

@@death_parade No, there's no pain in the arm, etc. I've been dealing with this since I was a child. I've been on several different medications in the past, but most of them dulled my artistic ideas & motivations, (paxil, for one example)...I get them about 2-3 times a week, sometimes more if I'm under alot of stress. Some of the symptoms may be similar to a heart attack, but I assure you it's a completely different condition.

The feelings you have during a heart attack, ARE a panic attack. That is why you give patients relaxing medicine because the attack stresses the heart even more.

A heart attack is a problem with the heart, a panic attack is a problem with the chemicals in the brain, serotonin for example. That's why they prescribe serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, (SSRI), to restore balance. Someone having a heart attack may be panicked, or even have a 'panic attack ' if they are prone to a chemical imbalance in their brain, but they are two completely different conditions. Believe me, I've been seeing doctors for forty years for this, and my father had heart problems for 30 years until he died from it last summer.

keep in mind, this episode was written and filmed at the height of the crash of "08, a LOT of people "went broke" and it was completely believable. If the Bentley was paid off, then there's no reason to sell it unless groceries were getting scarce and the power was about to be shut off.

That kid is so far behind, poor guy. I grew up with an addicted pedant, luckily my other parent was the best but I only saw then every other weekend. It's hard, you have to grow up fast. I'm glad I'm turning it sound with my son. Anywho, this episode was hard. Gretchen and Walt had a relationship that's what their fight is about. And it made me mad how he tells Jesse to go kill them like it's so easy. He is so messed up to Jesse and won't hear him out.

Roberts (writer) 1. No beetles were hurt! They had a container of dead bugs and one of live ones, so the ones that were stepped on were already dead 2. Aaron is smoking rock sugar, basically. It gives him a sugar high! He tries not to inhale...when he does accidentally, it’s really harsh. There’s rules about not showing inhaling drugs, though they can show it being exhaled 3. The sponge kid was played by twins. Aaron tried to show them before the piece was filmed where he was hit with the bottle that it was a rubber bottle, it was pretend, etc, but when it actually happened, they gave very real reactions. Aaron was talking to them during all the downtime 4. It was shot in a real house. An older woman lived there with like 15 cats & a lot of dogs. They had to clean it up a bit before shooting. There was “debris and aroma” 5. Jesse grew up an upper middle class kid (with a little brother)...so he’s less hardened to seeing a kid growing up in such squalor as he might’ve been had he had a rougher childhood. He’s retained some of his innocence 6. Jessica Hecht plays Gretchen. Adam Bernstein, one of their directors, happens to be married to her 7. It was difficult to get the Bentley - there wasn’t one available to rent in all of New Mexico, so they brought one in from out of state 8. Bryan & Jessica called Vince the night before the diner scene was shot to ask him about their background relationship that isn’t on the page 9. They fought really hard to get the “fuck” in the episode. They dipped the sound when it aired rather then making him say something softer 10. It’s like every episode, Walt chips off a bit of his soul. He feels alive for the first time in his 50 years

@4:21 just to quickly weigh-in with my opinion, I, too, at first, thought Walt was having a heart attack, and I think we were meant to be deceived and thrown off-guard by the elevator doors opening and there stands Hank looking calm. I really think that was a plot device used to create feelings of uneasiness, doubt, and anxiety within the viewer. They build A LOT of tension this way all throughout this series. It’s one looong roller coaster ride!!! Now...back to your awesome reaction!!! 😘 PS Okay made it to the end of the video! I always think about the web of lies Walt is building between him and Skylar, and wonder how anyone could possibly keep track of it all, and how could Walt’s wife be so gullible?
