That's so brilliant. The Dodgers realized the Yankees' defense was so bad, they put extra emphasis on simply putting the ball in play, knowing that forcing them to make plays would lead to lots more errors than most teams. It wasn't just lucky that the Yankees threw 2 games away with bad defense, the Dodgers KNEW it was bound to happen sooner or later.

@@felipenunez2058 Dodgers earned every win. Sure the Yankees opened the door in game 5, but the dodgers sprinted through and slammed it behind them. When I saw everything go wrong for the Yankees in the top of the 5th inning, I thought about an eerily similar inning for the Dodgers in NLDS game 3 against the Padres. Weird, flukey misplays where you should have had a scoreless inning, but the dodgers gave up 6 runs. (Buehler got pinned with all 6 ERs, which go back and watch the inning. Definitely doesn’t feel like 4 of those are earned runs) The difference is the Dodgers had that happen and went on lockdown mode out scoring their opponents 23-0 for the next 30+ innings. When it happened to the Yankees, they couldn’t recover.

The Dodger's scouting report on the Yankees pegged them as entitled and reliant of their talent instead of fundamentals. That's one side of the coin. @erik346xАй бұрын
Lifetime Dodgers fan here. Great podcast. Started watching your show a few games ago to get some context on the Yankees and fan perspective. I would also glance into some of the games against KC and the Guardians. As an outsider looking in I feel bad for you guys because to me it’s an organizational issue. When I compare the Dodgers and the Yankees organization, it’s like night and day. That scouting report on the Yankees pretty much describes the feeling I got after game 1. As an org, if you’re going to be okay with going all in on raw talent but overlooking fundamentals, the balance of strength vs. weaknesses, and how you use players based on that, you’re bound to fail. The more you’re okay with that attitude, the more it trickles down to the field of play with the players and coaches. That shows up everywhere. Just as an outsider, I got the sense that the players had this “We’re the Yankees” ego to them too. Even though they had their moments of togetherness I felt that they were just individuals playing together. I’d sometimes watch the Yankees postgame and hear Michael Kay be dismissive and mention that both teams aren’t very far apart in how good they are and I would just laugh. It’s almost delusional. Sorry guys. If the Yankees are going to get better they’re going to need to change their philosophy completely. It starts at the top. The Dodgers are the best because we focus on getting the most out of each player. Egos are left at the door. There’s no concern about hurting someone’s feelings if the line up order changes, who’s the captain, or if changing the line up is going to give off a perception of panic. There’s a process. It’s a blend of focusing on players strengths vs. the opposition weaknesses. Most importantly, it’s about making players feel comfortable by giving the players what they need to be successful. That includes not putting them into situations where they can’t succeed. Changes happen often. If someone’s not performing or contributing they’re told to work on things (with coaching staff help) or get sent down/traded away. A good amount of our players can play several positions, and play them well. We don’t just stick a guy at 3rd because he has talent. That’s not getting the most out of your players. It just seems like the Yankees get so fixated on ego, tradition, and legacy. So much so that they wouldn’t; change their line up even if it wasn’t effective. To me thats just plain lunacy. I feel bad for the fans. The worst thing that can happen to the Yankees going forward is that nothing changes and they overpay for Soto. See y’all next October (hopefully)
@randyrobey5643Ай бұрын
This is exactly what is wrong, and that is why many Yankee fans are so upset. This is a structural issue that is almost certainly not going to change as long as Hal Steinbrenner is at the top of the organization making millions off of the Yankee name. I have been a Yankees fan since the mid 1950s, and I never seen a Yankee team and a Yankee organization be such a mess.

Not a Yankees fan, but this video is an outstanding analysis with deep understanding of how player development work, especially with the pitching/batting dynamics in the minors. The Yankees has been consistently sloppy on the field all year. Remember when Torres was benched for not bothering to leg it out to 1st. This is not solely on one player, but on the coaching staff who tolerated and allowed the sloppy culture to manifest. The over dependence on star power and raw talent overshadowed the basics of consistent grit. I guess when players already got their bag, they think they have earned their right to let others do the dirty work. Like the saying goes, hard works thumps talents any day when talent refuse to work hard. The Dodgers are simply a harder working team with arguably slightly lesser talent. As long as the Yankees continue to prioritise glitz and not the grind, they'll remain glamorous contenders but falling short every time. Makes for a attractive story line to continue to draw in new paying fans, but the old hardcore fans know they'll always be shortchanged.

Off season improvements should encompass: Get a circular, hard contact, low strikeout nine man lineup, improve defense, baserunning, and baseball fundamentals, add two dominant starting pitchers, and strengthen the bullpen by not resigning Clay Holmes and getting a real closer like Tanner Scott.

I don't think the Dodger's scouting report could have predicted that pop fly ball Aaron Judge dropped.
@mrxxsesshomaruxx9642Ай бұрын
But it is a fundamentally lacking play because Judge was already thinking about the guy on base when he dropped that pop out, not sure why, you had a 5 run lead in the fifth dude… It’s crazy the money these guys got paid to suck like this.

The Yankees might be better off spreading their money around, rather than paying Soto a ton of money when the guy is a poor fielder, and a lousy baserunner. Picking up players that are fundamentally sound is more important than star power. They already have that with Judge, Cole, and Stanton. As for Soto asking for Ohtani money, he's not worth that. Ohtani can pitch as well as hit for that kind of money. Giving Soto 500 million is highly questionable because of the fielding and baserunning issues.

Let's be real, that SD team would probably have won the WS if the Dodgers didn't beat them. IMO they have the most complete team with alot of grit and toughness.

Padres did have a complete team, but they DIDNT have grit and toughness. They're too busy flipping bats and getting into it with fans.

Most grit and toughness doesn’t equal 24 consecutive scoreless innings. Yankees would have beat SD.

@antonioreyes7427Ай бұрын
Honestly you don't advance scouting to see these things all you need to do is watch their games. If the Yankees care about selling tickets they can sign Soto but; if they want to win they need : A replacement for Gleyber that could be Willy Adamez and move Volpe to second. They could use a real 3B, 1B. Starting pitching to replace Nestor. Revamp the bullpen. Work on defense, fundamental, accountability, coaching

I never understood when Stanton was hurt, why the Yanks never once ran an outfield of Verdugo/Grisham/Judge left to right, with Soto at his natural position of DH. Im guessing it was not to hurt Soto’s feelings. That defense is elite. I lost count on how many times I thought “Judge would have made that play” on a ball Soto misplayed. Soto playing right with Judge shifting to center really hurts the D, as Judge has below average range in center. With Stanton back, I’d rather deal with Soto’s poor defense in left, have Judge at his natural right field position, and play Grish over Verdugo (who’s literally replacement level) until Dominguez got healthy. Despite his poor play in his limited time in NY, Dominguez has always graded out as a plus defender by scouts in his minor league career. 🤷🏻♂️
@johnjperricone7856Ай бұрын
I don't know, maybe just coach, and game plan and execute like a real modern baseball team. From Cashman on down, the article is a damning indictment of the archaic and antiquated approach to baseball the Yankees have. It starts at the top and goes on down. Owner, GM, VP, scouts, coaches, manager, and day-to-day organization. Championship teams have an attention to detail and excellence that this Yankee team has not had for decades now. Decades.
@johndurrer7869Ай бұрын
The fundamentals are an organizational thing not a player thing. Look at the players the Dodgers go after they usually have the ability to play multiple positions. Even Will Smith can play third base first base and catcher. Freeman and Teoscar are the only two that can only play one position. And there very capable in that one position. When you get drafted by the Dodgers you understand you are going to value the fundamentals
@monumentofwondersАй бұрын
The Yankees are starry eyed. Not every star helps you win, even if they put up big numbers. Baseball is a team sport, with a 40 man roster. Teams forget that. The Yankees were just awful on fundamentals.
@briangonzalez9684Ай бұрын
I’m the biggest Soto fan, but if the price is 700 mil, I’d much rather get back to basics, spread that money around, get guys who put the ball in play, give Dominguez a shot at centerfield, I like the potential Bregman deal.

Really wondering if Judge would transition to 1B so he doesn't have to crash into any more walls. Thy could let Gleyber go and move Jazz to 2B and Cabrera to 3B or vice versa. They use the guys they have and just try to improve fundamentals instead of signing more high priced free agents.
@ikemartin6500Ай бұрын
Soto's going to be too expensive unless he takes $70 mil for 14 years ($50 mil per). To lengthen the lineup, get Bergman, Santander (or Teoscar Hernandez). I'd also work Cabrera out at first.

I understand the generational bat Soto provides, but the uninspiring defense and non-athleticism/versatility that accompanies the amount of money he’ll command is a turn-off for me. I think about Soto in RF vs Mookie during the World Series. Mookie made some great grabs along with snags on sinking line drives that Soto doesn’t have the speed to make. Also, how Mookie played balls off the wall to hold extra base hits into singles was imperative in keeping runs off the scoreboard. Soto is a DH in the making. Is that worth $500-$600M over the life of the contract? Perhaps if multiple World Series are won. It’s a huge risk. At least with Ohtani, you know you’re getting a global brand/revenue as well.
