I marched Cavaliers in 2008, that is NOT Jermery Seneca on the cadets foot. It is a guy named Jordan Pike. You are correct on the GF picture though. The story behind that, if you watch the 2008 finals scores broadcast you will see Cavaliers fall once they announce BD's score. We were stretching on finals rehearsal day and one of our tuba players said, " You know, if Phantom wins tonight, we should all do a mass suicide. I mean our third movement is called Death Before Dishonor. It is the Samurai way." We all thought it was hilarious! So our horn sergeants walked around retreat block with the color guard "swords" and when they announced "Blue Devils" our sergeant yelled like a Samurai and ran down the line "Killing" people. Jordan Pike was one of those people and purposely fell in the Cadets block because we knew the Cadets were "Not allowed to move." Hopkins came running because he thought the member passed out. Jordan thought it was a member for a second and didnt move. Once he realized it was Hopkins he got up really quickly.

I marched Teal Sound in 1999 and in 2000 and I was the first member of the corps. I was rooting for them that 2012 season and they had the show to possibly break into the top 12 and they were so good. They kept climbing every year and disaster struck. Centerville, OH. What's sad is that the kids didn't even know till they got off the field after their performance in Centerfield. They were given multiple options and i don't remember what they were. But one was, get on 1 bus and head back to Florida (the other bus left to return to Florida) OR find another corps that has another opening spot and see if they will take you in. And thanks to the Colts D&B corps they pretty much took much took all the kids that wanted to continue on.

The Whitewater Wipeout happened - I saw it live. It was all we talked about for days - like how every Cadet on or off their feet did their best to power through the spill. Since Suncoast Sound loaned Garfield at least two contrabass instruments for every regional and world finals, we talked a lot and they mentioned that Z-Pull crashes happened in practice a few times. Marc Sylvester also mentioned it when he taught us at our UF Gainesville camp in 1986.
@rjhollinger10 ай бұрын
saw Boston at their Florida camp today and... my god. Oh sure, they were pretty damn good last year. 12 to 6th is surely no joke. But this - what I saw today - this is now something entirely different. This is something that I've seen before. I've seen it and I recognize it as sure as I know my own face. I cannot mistake this feeling for anything other than what it most assuredly is. It is something I saw, and felt, back in 2012 with Crown; I saw and felt it again in '14 with TILT. And this thing is - a Super Saiyan. That's the only way I can explain it. Those corps in those years took that invisible step that upped their power to a level they had never achieved before. Maybe they didn't win it all, but that was not why we remember those shows. We remember because they had crossed some invisible line and the ultimate result of that was inevitable. Even if it took another season, even if it took two, their path was set. Boston has crossed that line. It's not even about where they place this year. It's about putting everyone else; the fans, DCI, and the top 3, on notice. They know how to go Super Saiyan now, and they are coming. We've had corps do 'dark' shows. We've had corps do artsy shows. We've had 'clever', and minimalist and Fellini-esque and psychedelic and you name it shows. Prepare for Angry. Animal Farm in comparison was just sarcastic with a touch of upset. Wicked Games was dark with a touch of brooding. What is coming this year is controlled and brutal anger. I know it because even Gino was surprised enough by it to raise an eyebrow and say out loud, "these kids are very good at doing angry". Anyways, I'm calling it right now. Top 4. They'll fight it out with someone, possibly Cavs. Here's the Shamaliyan plot twist though. It's entirely too early to tell of course, but if they keep ramping up their power level at this same rate, they may very well leave 4th in their wake. There, I said it. There is a definite possibility that, despite all I just said and what I've just predicted, that I might be underestimating them.

No video of Whitewater wipeout? I was there, and remember it like it was yesterday. It was (I think) the 3rd of 4th time we had seen the Garfield show that year. It was groundbreaking and astonishing. So, when the marching dominos started to fall at the end of the show, we were in disbelief. We thought for sure that there would be injuries (beyond bloody lips and teeth).When we saw them again again at Finals, we held our breath during that move. And that time, many people cheered just because nobody fell.
@samsignorelli10 ай бұрын
Vid of the Wipeout likely does not exist. 1) Filming regionals was not a thing in 1984. 2) Camera were huge. 3) Cell phones did not exist. There ARE the pics of the Wipeout, shown in this vid, but in 4 decades, that's all I've ever seen. The only physical injury to a member (there were some horns that took damage) was a sprained/strained ankle for the soprano who tripped and started it all. He missed a couple of practices and maybe one show, but was back in the lie after that. They got a perfect subcap score -- ensemble visual, IIRC -- and the fall did NOT cost them the win over SCV and us (BD)....SCV earned the win legit that night. The Wipeout was missed by the upstairs visual judge because 1) it was way out at the end of the line on side 2 (audience right), 2) the judge was looking at the center of the form, and 3) they recovered VERY fast and were back in the line before the judge looked at them....not in the right spots, but in the form. And as it was the final move it in the show, placement in the line didn't mean anything. The audio is from a brass judge, who could not score a visual caption. Now...someone DID catch his heels on the move at finals -- it was in the center and on camera. Had HE fallen, I'd have my ring....but I'd hate to be him after that...he'd've been blaming himself for the loss for 4 decades....no bueno.

Gosh, I feel old. I've been out of the activity as a corps member since 2007. That summer, our busses had this brand new technology called wi-fi. It didn't really matter because nobody had ability to use it. The snap has been around much longer than most people realize. A lot of corps (mine included) only got off-time when it was laundry day. My last year, I think we had 2 full off days the entire summer. The day after off-days were usually the worst from a rehearsal stand point. For some other oddities and terms in DCI (at least from my time): 2006 Capital Regiment Box 5 vs box 1 housing The RCA Dome The mass brass debacle was common for several years (not just 2008 or by BK) Bob Barker 2000 BD bass drummer The Vanguard yell, particularly '02-'07 Similar to the Iowa town, rehearsing in Utah was always an interesting experience given the Mormon lifestyle. Most corps until very recently never had medical staffs (We had Bandaids and Advil), strength coaches, and chefs, much less meteorologists Buy-stops were a rare occurrence, and this was well before Bucees became what it is today.

Back in the summer of 1995 he, Brian Ellis, and I were working on making Winter Marching Brass Ensemble a thing and he developed a music set and theme for the first show, Brian worked on drill and music, and I worked on some ideas and rules for the activity. I got out of music education about a year after that and always wondered what happened with that idea. Not sure if it was the genesis of the current activity I'm seeing now through WGI, but it was an attempt to start it.

The national anthem thing was started by 7th Regiment around 2017 TBH, it was basically a fun thing to do while showering. The acoustics in locker rooms are especially great for harmony. I'm pretty sure we started the trend because those seasons, we would sing it in the showers before shows, and get really odd looks from other corps. So, I think we were the first. Back then, Open Class championships were held in Michigan City, IN, and most of the housing sites did not have locker rooms that were large enough for an entire corps to shower. So a lot of OC corps were all doing pre-show showers at the show site. I think that is where the meme spread. 7R would enter the room, look at each other wordlessly, and start. Before OC finals, that meant that between 5 and 7 corps were showing in the same locker room at the same time, figuring out what the hell to do when the 7R folks were belting out the anthem as loud as they (we) could. We were on strict orders to NOT do this before OC prelims (we followed them), since our shower time overlapped with other corps performance times, and the showers looked right onto the field. We tried to also do it with the Soviet anthem, but it was hard to teach the lyrics. The international members of our corps were often very excited to sing our anthem with us.

I can tell you I did play something I fully regret at the end of the all corps and John ran up asking, " is that how you're going to end your season". I don't want to bring up what happened next but was not good. There isn't a single recording of what I played to this day as the videos all cut right before I play the line. You are a little off on the Blast! history. The 1994 and 1995 seasons, Star of Indiana was still operating as Star of Indiana, they were doing a brass theatre summer program with the Canadian Brass (I know it was the Canadian Brass in 94, not sure about 95) A couple of the designers then workshopped the brass theatre concept to a Broadway show. The show Blast!, was not part of the Star of Indiana organization and did not premiere until late 1999 or 2000. (As there are 3 members of the 1999 Crossmen, who I marched with, that are in the original cast) The PBS broadcast was the show seen in both New York and in London's West End. In 2002, they were workshopping a new version of the Show with Wayne Downey writing the brass book. The did a preview show series in Walt Disney World.

@CJsMusicTrumpet10 ай бұрын
I have one with a vertical valve. Although I’ll admit I have a strong suspicion that it’s a prototype because all of the other models of that horn have a horizontal.

Me during this video: "I know, I know, I know..." Also, ngl, that 2023 Crown Baritone 3DS cam pissed me off. I was really wanting a horn cam to learn the music and he put that out. Normally, it would be funny to me, but I was not amused because there were no other baritone cams posted at the time and it took a long time before another baritone finally posted a decent cam. In the end though, I am grateful that they post these things at all because I know they don't have to. Also also, why skip For Holy Name Shall Always Be?

If you make another iceberg video, you should look into "You guys, Bob Barker died!" This was a joke in the early-mid 2000's -- each year Bob Barker "died" during DCI tour. It was basically a joke about people being disconnected from the "outside" world during tour in those days since it was pre-smartphones.

I wish I could find out where and why the rumor spread because it's definitely one of the weirder ones. Weirder than bob barker dying in my eyes for sure.

I thought it was 91, in which he wouldve been 19 and before his appearance in dre's album in 92
@neillroshto164210 ай бұрын
Supposedly, he marched second mello in either ‘91 or ‘92. The rumor goes that his PR team didn’t like the fact that he marched DCI (thought it was bad for his image) and paid to have any evidence of him marching destroyed. However, there is still one group photo that exists showing Snoop in uniform. I swear I’ve seen it at some point, but it also could very well be a fever dream at this point. We’re talking 7-8 years ago during peak >implying days (iykyk). I choose to believe it’s cannon lol

The absolute shock and AWE on my face when i'm watching this video and the screen scrolls down to about halfway down the iceberg and i simply see "SHAWN NAGPAL" I busted out laughing! I think i vaguely know why he's on here, but I never actually got to know the full story. I was just super surprised to see his name here because he was one of my baritone techs when i marched for crossmen in 2022! I do know he's somewhat of a cryptid in the drum corps community somehow? something like that. When i auditioned for Bloo the following season (and didnt make it lol) i remember we were doing casual icebreakers during some down time at that camp and when i said i marched with Crossmen last year", 2 kids immediately were like "OMG SO YOU KNOW SHAWN NAGPAL?!?"
@croatiancowboy6 ай бұрын
Also side note, and semi-unrelated, the dude is a living meme anyway. Among the collective members/former members of Crossmen from the '21 - '23 seasons, there are a good few dozen or so meme worthy pics of that man, my favorite of which, a screenshot of the baritone group chat where he "threatened" us with a knife (he was helping in the cook truck that night) if we didn't finish our dotbooks that night lmao

I would like to see a Canadian Drum Corps iceberg. Some topics to include could be: Drum Corps National/"What about us?" Toronto being the only city to ever have two corps in DCI Finals DCI Finals in Montreal ^ Highest ever attendance for DCI Finals ^SCV tear due to the audience being so loud ^ Moving the field back 15 yards due to the sound issues 55 yard line (unsure if there are any actual stories about this, but Canadian football fields are larger than American fields) 9/11 killing off Canadian corps Les Stentors The Calgary Stampede Showband
@richbrass1210 ай бұрын
Has someone who marched in 2007 finals, I can definitely tell you that the field really does suck. It felt like you're marching on concrete and the yard lines and hash were really hard to see so if you had intervals that were two steps apart and you're making sharp turns and you so happen to be holding a contra, good luck
