You are so damn lucky! OK. Was running a built to hell and gone a 400 Pontiac in my 67 Chevelle SS. After a lot of different small breakages (and vapor lock and blown rear ends thrown in for good measure), I was giving a ride to a friend when the BAD happened. It shifted from first to second normally at VERY high rpm, and it shut off like I turned the key off. At the time these things were noted for harmonic balancers coming off at high rpm. They just were not up to the task of my level of rpm and created really bad vibrations of their own. Their first order of business was to lose the crank bolt. My problem this time was the machined nose of the balancer shattered, sending chunks thru the timing chain. Pontiac shares a separate cover for the timing chain unlike the rest of GM where the back half is the block. The chunks ripped massive holes in the timing chain housing immedately pumping all the coolant into the oil pan before it quit turning. I took the air filters off (all 3) to see something, maybe giving me a clue. I have to admit it was pretty awesome watching fuel plume shooting of of each of the 3 carbs while cranking! Well, dollars and blood later it turned out no other damage was done internally, but that is when Loctite became a close friend.
