Breaking out stucco for new window installation a stud wall fast and easy.
Howdy subscribers, below are all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon’s website.
www.stuccoplas...
Kirk and Jason Giordano Plastering Inc.
Is a City permit needed to change windows? If you are planning to change a header, probably.
At least most cities say so. If not, as a rule, no city permits are needed for replacing windows.
If you have a permit and want to pass a city lath inspection, here’s the method to pass that inspection if you have a home built before 198, which has no plywood backing.
FYI, when breaking out stucco on a home with no sheer wall or plywood, it’s ten times as difficult and sucks 20 times more than breaking out a home that does indeed have a solid backing.
Homes with solid backing, such as plywood, became normal or coded around 1980 Yea.
However, millions of homes worldwide have solid backings, too, because many had wood siding, cladding, or substrates to begin with.
Special tip, anyone who has questions on stucco or plastering, type your question into our channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it’s done.
This feature is lightyears ahead of any plastering forum and is over twelve years in the making.
More break-out videos are below. It’s a drag, but you save some big dough if you do it.
• Break out stucco aroun... break out stucco on a stud wall.
• How to Install and stu... Install a lath window in a concrete foundation.
• Waterproofing new wind... Replace a window in a stucco wall.
• Lath or waterproofing ... Break out and Lath a Hole in a Wall where an Air Conditioner was removed.

Thanks for showing how you do a repair when there is no sheathing behind the stucco. It's horrible to see how builders get away with using no sheathing or only sheathing the corners. They still do that in Arizona. As a builder myself I find this to be a horrible practice that just causes problems with any restoration work in the future. You made that look easy, thanks for sharing.
@GiordanoPlastering
@GiordanoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and understanding! On these older homes it absolutely makes sense to match what they have regarding the lack of sheathing. It does make it a bit harder for us, but it's possible. Are you saying you see new construction without sheathing? That would be very different! I assumed it was mandated for new stuff everywhere, it's such a big benefit for buildings.

@@GiordanoPlastering yes they are still doing it in some homes in Arizona. I was down there last year opening a GC contracting company and I met with a window company to see there install. The house had sheathing on the corners and just styrofoam for EFIS on the main body. It was really weird but I guess they get so little moister that it's not as necessary. Heck they still use Adobe if you want it. That being said, I did see most homes getting full sheathing so I may have been looking at "value" homes. Which in local jurisdictions sometimes they allow for parts of international code to be modified to save cost. It was definitely odd to see nowadays. You fellas have a good day and thanks for responding.

Howdy Al, no doubt there are many older homes in Canada too; back in 1980 or so, new codes such as attaching plywood to all stud homes before stucco became law. This made lathing and plastering s'oooo much easier than lath and plastering over stud homes. When I started, we didn't have the luxury of plywood homes. I think it was because we lather/plasterers needed something to whine about.🥳 Kirk giordano plastering

Thank you Chris, I appreciate that. Unfortunately I agree with what you're saying. We are seeing fewer younger folks joining the trades. In the US we had a few decades of huge pushes for college with a lack of emphasis on trades and I think that has really affected how many younger folks have entered trades in general. Plus, if you can work from home on a computer why go to the field and get filthy all day? Makes sense to me!

@@gladiator22666I do not agree that young folks do not want to work. That is bull that is meant to pit us against each other. Instead, I see young folks that are less willing to be exploited for corporate profit. Everyone wants and needs to work, but young folks have seen companies chew up and spit out people for years. Why would they volunteer for that? We need to empower folks to learn trades and become self sufficient, and instead over the last few decades our society has told them to take on mountains of debt and work for others. That's a problem.

Thanks for the video! I'm working on a 1940's house in LA, and the tarpaper is holding up fine in some places, but when working around the windows some of it is in bad shapes and crumbles when it's disturbed. any tips for fixing things if there is damage in the tar paper in places where it's difficult to repair? For instance, the junction between the wall and the concrete-slab porch? I'm hoping i don't have to chip out the porch in order to get the wall waterproof. Thanks!

I finally plastered a ceiling alone. It was really stressful. I thought I lost it, but when the second coat went on it was nice and smooth. The only thing I'm confused about is where all these clinkers are coming from. That's what was really driving me nuts.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Jorge, clinker can be from stuff your trowel picks up along the way from, say, on a ceiling, from the crown molding, or on the back side of your trowel, or your mud wasn't mixed all the way. 🤔
@Bigelite094
@Bigelite094 2 жыл бұрын
@@StuccoPlastering I think my mud wasn't mixed all the way. I think I'm using the wrong paddle. I kept my bucket clean, paddle was clean, I tried cleaning my trowel because I think a few times it was that, other times I think it was from the corner of the wall. So all that's left might be not mixing it good enough. I never thought I would have fun plastering. Turns out I just hate sanding. No more taping mud for me.

They can't tie into the old material and make it water proof with out loosening up some of the lath and a clean straight cut is more likely to crack in the future.

Chris got it right. Straight cuts are more likely to crack, and it is harder to get the paper overlapped so the repair is water tight. Also, I believe grinders create significantly more dust when removing stucco compared to a rotary hammer. Both make a mess, but a grinders high RPM and powerful motor shoot that dust everywhere. Not always a problem, but I prefer the tool we show here.
