Breaking Tempered Glass for Remodeling Job

The guys were telling me about breaking large panels of tempered glass. So, I got the honors on this large panel. It’s really strong from the front but one good hit from the side it let’s all the tension out as it shatters.

To those saying uninstall it and repurpose it. That’s understandable but the weight of that glass requires special equipment to remove and move it, plus the labor. Just a ball park but $400 per piece to pull it out and take it to the reStore. It’s just not viable.

@@ablak3712 because spending $1800 on a suction equipped mini crane to remove a $1200 window and another $1800 to reinstall it somewhere else, all while the same results (or better) could be achieved with 3 smaller windows for $900 total…is the reason the West is failing? What do you do for a living if you don’t mind sharing?

Im pretty sure these guys has wagons for transporting drywall and what not.. Rip out front gasket up and down, take out bottom profile cover, use utility knife to cleave silicone between glasses. Two cheap suction cups will do.. Rather that than sweeping everything up and picking up larger debris, while also spreading microshards everywhere (very very very few vacuums are designed to handle glass removal) Then either put on craigslist or whatever, or throw on the dump (they definately have the cost of waste disposal covered by the contract) in the contract

this is special tempered glass, normal glass breaks in big chunks (which is very dangerous and causes injury. Tempered glass is safe)

Just need to tap the edge if the glass, its tempered glass, very strong, but very weak on sides and corners. Tempered glass is under pressure, so when you make a chip it creates a chain reaction within a millisecond and shatters, normal glass doesn't break the same. Think glass teardrop.

Storing glass is costly and takes up space because no one orders the same exact thing ever. Meaning it'll just sit at the warehouse. Almost impossible to reshape tempered glass so it's better to destroy, put in a small bag or box with others and ship it out as once to be recycled.

No this type of glass can’t be re-cut to a different size. It has all that tension in there. It could’ve been removed as a full piece like a lot of people have said, but it was very large and heavy so we decided just to scrap this one.

This piece was very large and heavy. So on a fast moving job we often don’t have time to mess with it. We did save a bunch of other pieces though. It has hardware to install etc. who’s really gonna use it.
