I can't tell you how refreshing and affirming it is for a newbie videography to hear someone with experience saying "I wouldn't worry about it." Thank you! It's so easy otherwise to get bogged down with the technical stuff, when the attentiveness and story-telling is far more important. Heart vs head etc. Thanks as always, Adam!

Consider this, 25fps and 1/50sec exposure means also 1/50sec of compleet darkness per frame. Now take 50fps and 1/50sec, you"ll end up with the same 25 frames and motionblur and 25 extra intermediate frames. So there isn’t a real reason why 50 fps should use 1/100 sec of an exposure if played back realtime. Adding extra frames doesn't means the original frames need less motionblur.

During the day I shoot at 50p 1/100 with an ND for less light and at night 25p 1/50 or even 1/25 for an extra stop of light

Agree 100% I've never stuck to the 180 rule - for outdoors I do slap on an ND4 filter but only to avoid really crazy high shutter speeds

Absolutely agree! I notice initially during the edit but your eye adjust to it quickly. Learn the rules and then break them.

Now that’s a rule to live by!

I use a variable ND for most of the day. I personally find it makes exposing shots a lot easier as I don't have to think about settings or the 180 rule. Plus, if I'm on a gimbal it makes exposing physically easier. On my Moza Air Cross the shutter dial is awkwardly positioned behind the gimbal so an ND on the front of the lens is a lot quicker and easier. Of course, if I'm in a pinch I'll crank the shutter as it's quicker than putting an ND on. But I do agree that waaaay too much emphasis is put on doing things 'properly' or following the rules. At the end of the day, if your clients are happy then that's all that really matters.

Amen. Fair point about the gimbals, I’m far too laid back to use mine 😆

Cranking shutter in a pinch is so much quicker than (deciding on, then) slapping on an ND. I use them for couples photos when I know there’s a period of time when I’ll be outside, but when you’re in and out of a venue in different light scenarios they are a pain!

Yes it’s dead easy for switching in and outdoors 👍

How did it look? My dumb head have been shooting them in f14-f18 thinking I can't break the 180 rule and now I have people telling me I'm dumb for not cranking my shutter speed instead of my apeture

It’s just a different look, no right or wrong 🙂 but in wedding videography, a simple way to look more “cinematic”

What happens if you shoot 50fps with 50 shutter speed? Searched low and high no one is explaining ths? Thanks
@AdamWingFilms4 жыл бұрын
In short.. Nothing noticeable unless you’re watching on a big screen. It will have slightly more motion blur than say 1/100 shutter speed but test it out and if it looks ok to you then I wouldn’t worry. 👍
@ethanleung26283 жыл бұрын
Does the video look weird or unusual if I use a frames per second of lets say 60fps and a shutter speed of 1/1000? I am trying to minimize motion blur for a green screen and still have it look realistic.
@AdamWingFilms3 жыл бұрын
Shouldn’t be noticeable.

Hi Adam, another great vid! I just wondered if there were any negatives or risks when using a higher shutter speed? I remember when I used to film on ‘auto’ I’d sometimes get flickering on screen.
@AdamWingFilms4 жыл бұрын
A ‘purist’ would tell you that you lose the motion blur which makes it look cinematic. But that’s the only downside and doesn’t bother me at all

Great to see you cover this Adam, I do exactly the same as you, I see people speaking about ND filters all the time on the Facebook groups and like you say, for wedding films it’s really not THAT essential. But I am fairly open to trying new things & I recently purchased the Gobe NDX 55mm Variable ND Lens Filter check it out if you’re wanting to get one: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B014SIWLTM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lzGmDbMGCHYWT
