Val Valentino was definitely not some two-bit nobody magician. That is kind of why his reveal caused such an uproar and string of lawsuits. Sure, that name means nothing to the average Joe and would give the impression this guy is a nobody. But how many magicians can the average Joe actually name? David Copperfield, Houdini....and.....yeah, that's it. Valentino is a pretty big deal and what he did ruffled a LOT of feathers but he said he did it to get the magic community to innovate again because the Internet was coming and it was going to work out their tricks left and right, so they had to get to talking again. Well that, and he made a lot of money. I'm sure that helped a bit.
@stubbyfoamz13 жыл бұрын

3:02 Not going to contradict what was said, but I am going to add onto it. I remember when this show was airing on TV, and by the end of the run, it had injected new life into the magic community. Even I had been drawn in, thanks to the simple kid-friendly tricks, and when I was in 5th grade, I had my parents buy me a monthly magic kit that would show up in bundles once a month by mail. There were shrinking dice, comedy card decks, props for magic with money, teleportation devices... This show made magic popular again for several years, even after it stopped coming out with new episodes. Professional magicians were furious, but amateur magicians, and fans of magic in general had a newfound appreciation for the art.
@hanthonyc3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The reason it caused an upheaval was because those at the top don't want to be taken back to equal level. This is how I got interested in magic as a kid, I find the psychology behind illusions and trickery so much cooler than "oooo its supernatural or something ;)"
@ZeroFighter3 жыл бұрын
@@hanthonyc Exactly! Learning can be fun, but it has to be fun in order to learn it. Half the appeal is working out how people react, and how to predict what they'll do. Once you know how to manipulate people psychologically, and get them to do what you want, then you just need to practice the motions until you can pull of the necessary sleight of hand to make it look good. One time, when I worked in a pizzeria, there was this kid who would not stop crying no matter what the parents did. When I came to check if they needed refills or anything, I grabbed a pepper shaker off an empty table, got the kid's attention, put a napkin over it, slid the shaker off of the table when he wasn't paying attention, and smashed the napkin down while thumping the shaker on the underside of the table. This blew the kid's mind because to hm, I'd just shoved the pepper THROUGH the table without breaking anything. Kid stopped crying, and spent the rest of the meal trying to figure out how I'd done it. Never saw him or the parents again to my knowledge, but I'd like to believe that it gave the kid a passing interest in magic. If nothing else, I got a nice tip from the parents that day.
@hanthonyc3 жыл бұрын
@@ZeroFighter Yeah! I'm a childcare worker and a camp counselor, having little tricks like that is essential. But again, most magic is about 90% audience reaction analysis and 10% actual trick.

I'm really glad this show was made, because it drove magicians to make something new, something better, and it worked. That was the intention of the masked magician aswell.

I mean, turning a Bentley into a Lambo is cool and all but I'm not exactly in a position to pull that one off. I'll take the soda can and the toothpick

Lol, I remember watching this in the morning while eating some snacks getting ready for the school. There were so many shows and cartoons even on repeat in the morning that many times had to rush to the school but still enjoyed wacthing it again. Good times.

You are right real Magicians were mad at him, and the Masked Magician did the show so real Magicians would have to update their act.

This show was always on the AXN channel when I was a wee lad. This and Criss Angel were always on. (MIIINNDDFRRREEAAAK!) Also David Blaine. I remember the day when he unmasked himself and he was like "IT IS I! VALENTINO!" and I was like "Who?".
