3:02 Not going to contradict what was said, but I am going to add onto it. I remember when this show was airing on TV, and by the end of the run, it had injected new life into the magic community. Even I had been drawn in, thanks to the simple kid-friendly tricks, and when I was in 5th grade, I had my parents buy me a monthly magic kit that would show up in bundles once a month by mail. There were shrinking dice, comedy card decks, props for magic with money, teleportation devices... This show made magic popular again for several years, even after it stopped coming out with new episodes. Professional magicians were furious, but amateur magicians, and fans of magic in general had a newfound appreciation for the art.
@hanthonyc
@hanthonyc 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The reason it caused an upheaval was because those at the top don't want to be taken back to equal level. This is how I got interested in magic as a kid, I find the psychology behind illusions and trickery so much cooler than "oooo its supernatural or something ;)"
@ZeroFighter
@ZeroFighter 3 жыл бұрын
@@hanthonyc Exactly! Learning can be fun, but it has to be fun in order to learn it. Half the appeal is working out how people react, and how to predict what they'll do. Once you know how to manipulate people psychologically, and get them to do what you want, then you just need to practice the motions until you can pull of the necessary sleight of hand to make it look good. One time, when I worked in a pizzeria, there was this kid who would not stop crying no matter what the parents did. When I came to check if they needed refills or anything, I grabbed a pepper shaker off an empty table, got the kid's attention, put a napkin over it, slid the shaker off of the table when he wasn't paying attention, and smashed the napkin down while thumping the shaker on the underside of the table. This blew the kid's mind because to hm, I'd just shoved the pepper THROUGH the table without breaking anything. Kid stopped crying, and spent the rest of the meal trying to figure out how I'd done it. Never saw him or the parents again to my knowledge, but I'd like to believe that it gave the kid a passing interest in magic. If nothing else, I got a nice tip from the parents that day.
@hanthonyc
@hanthonyc 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZeroFighter Yeah! I'm a childcare worker and a camp counselor, having little tricks like that is essential. But again, most magic is about 90% audience reaction analysis and 10% actual trick.

Val Valentino was definitely not some two-bit nobody magician. That is kind of why his reveal caused such an uproar and string of lawsuits. Sure, that name means nothing to the average Joe and would give the impression this guy is a nobody. But how many magicians can the average Joe actually name? David Copperfield, Houdini....and.....yeah, that's it. Valentino is a pretty big deal and what he did ruffled a LOT of feathers but he said he did it to get the magic community to innovate again because the Internet was coming and it was going to work out their tricks left and right, so they had to get to talking again. Well that, and he made a lot of money. I'm sure that helped a bit.

That’s what I don’t get. Most of the tricks wouldn’t work on a live audience and rely on limited camera angles. At that point, might as well use special effects and orchestrate the whole thing. It hits an awkward middle ground between live show and tv show so it feels cheap either way.

This guy wasn't hated because he revealed tricks, every illusion he showed was like magic 101 that the high level guys were already lightyears ahead of. Magicians hated him and his show because he took something that they used to inspire amazement in people and painted it as them making the audience suckers. He spread the idea that magic was just a field full of people who only wanted to deceive you and and turn you into suckers and that only by watching his show could you prevent yourself from getting got. It was such an offense to people who's entire life's passion was to entertain and fill people with that innate sense of wonder, then this nobody comes on TV and tells you that magicians are nothing but grifters who want to make fools out of you. He took something as positive as the magic community and painted it in a needlessly negative light for millions of people. That did much more damage than him revealing some mediocre illusions.

To be fair, magicians are trying to trick the audience. What makes magic shows fun is intent. The intent isn't to scam people or peddle pseudoscience, or some crap. It's to give people a sense of wonder. It's like reading a book, or watching a play. You're emerging yourself in a world of fantasy. Yes it's all a lie, but it's about believing a lie for fun.
