I'm undecided if I will come back. But there is enough content on my channel to keep you going for a while.

I'm surprised how nice it sounds when you demonstrated singing slightly off the pitch. It gives me this feeling that you're a good singer, but just felt like not trying so hard, like we're just catching you in a candid moment, singing to yourself and feeling something.

Thanks. If I were actually in the right emotion, it would have come across even more authentically. I was already hyped up by the time I did that recording, so it's hard for me to switch "emotional modes" like that. I have to be in a really chilled out emotion to sing those notes in that particular kind of out of tune way. It was really hard for me to do it in that recording because my body just wanted to sing them in tune due to my energy level, haha. There are so many nuances to music that you can really play with once you get down the basics. That's where all the fun is at -- breaking the rules (within reason) to see what you can come up with! If you want to see more out of tune singing done well, really check out that Nina Simone performance. I think she would resonate with you and your style.

You said exactly what my vocal teacher told me. Do not worry too much about getting the pitch perfectly in tune all the time (unless you are totally off-key or singing the melody completely wrong to the point that it is unrecognisable or unpleasant to listen to, now that is a different story) - it gives a lot more human quality to the overall performance.

Very intelligent video man 🙂 in a different context I noticed this a while ago in Bruno Mars’ “uptown funk”. In the pre-chorus build up the second “‘cause uptown funk gon’ give it to ya” is slightly below the pitch and it enhances that feeling of tension before the chorus hits and relieves it

That's very interesting! I was just thinking about Billie Holiday while you sang

Oh really? She definitely used some of these things too! But you really have to listen to Nina Simone sing "Strange Fruit". She just took things to an entirely different level. There is a clip on KZbin where she's being interviewed right before she sings the song and she discusses what it means to her. And you can hear every ounce of that when she actually sings it.

Marnell Sample Thank you for the suggestion, I listened to it right away! The song is such a punch in your stomach ( as we say in Italy) and Nina' s version makes you feel all the sorrow, the horror, the injustice...
@VocalLiberation

Yes. That was definitely part of Nina's gift. She had musical intelligence (she knew the rules), but also knew how to communicate something in a very deep, powerful way. Certain songs by her can really hit you right in the gut.

Was your "Mixed Voice part 2" video taken off KZbin? Just 2 days ago I was rewatching it and taking notes and today it's gone! Do you have that video saved? (And the one about Whitney's artistry) It was such an important source for me.

Maybe in the future. But that's not something you need to worry about for now. You still need to get down the basics.

Loving the funny valentine ... but isn't this what Jazz singers do a lot of the time ... maybe I don't note how they tend still to stay in within pitches in the same key. I do nit listen to a lot of jazz as I love the sound of accuracy... I am likely missing out, on my listening experience I am realising! Time to broaden horizons!

Thanks. It's not just jazz singers. Musical theater singers do it too, as well as pop artists. In particular, for musical theater people, they do things like this to portray various types of characters, especially in some of the more comedic roles or characters that are deeply scorned. I mean, even in opera, it is done -- just look at some of the comedic roles for baritones, like the Barber of Seville. A lot of times when singers do that role (think of the aria Largo al factotum), they sing a bit sharp and with all kinds of crazy colors in the voice to express the character. If you sang that aria 100% in tune, the character wouldn't come across correctly. Joyce DiDonato, in one of her masterclasses, talked about many of these stylistic elements, including singing a bit out of tune, a bit before/behind the beat, etc to convey different ideas. I think this is the video, or it might have been one where she was working with a soprano. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXSpoKSGnMx8Z9k
