Hi. I'm old school RN. I did home health with pediatrics & adults on ventilators. And I cant get work. She is showing a excellent technique. Patients usually on back and restricts air. This should be done a.m/pm. Pt. Leaning forward hugging a pillow. Also for a small child or aged...use a regular semi- folded bath towel on back. This protects the skin from injury. Do as pictured. I've done this hand massage from back of spine long strokes upward. This will generate some heat..hence the towel. This will aid in lung expansion. The patient can practice coughing. Mte. Be uncomfortable but goal is to keep airways open. Encourage deep breathing. This doesn't hurt. Also I just ordered & received a handheld percussion massager that feels great & can assist in loosening secretions. Also flu is circulation again. Get ahead of this if u are smoker etc. I was very I'll last year after getting the pneumonia 21 vaccine. I had to sleep sitting up in bed with pillows. These actions may assist in lung expansion & air movement. Please seek help & physician if it gets worse. Stay healthy everyone. I had an instructor who took care of his younger brother with whooping cough. Old school.

That's pretty pathetic when you literally have to ask for the proper care. Unacceptable guys. Wow. I use this technique on my kids because they're stuck wearing masks in class and they all have colds and they're going to end up really sick because of the masks if we're not careful. Duh.

I learned percussive technique for treating kids with cystic fibrosis. When I got my physical therapy license I treated quite a number of elderly patients. I'd like to make a few suggestions. 1. Older patients that have less padding from muscle and have frail build may appreciate your using a towel. 2. Don't be apologetic about providing the percussion, this is a life-saving technique. I would start with soft blows and gradually increase the strength of my blows and ask the patient to guide me as to how much they could tolerate. 3. We had 5 or more positions that we would use with the CF kids, elderly patients might have difficulty with changing positions but, leaning back in the chair for upper lobes (use a towel for sure) would be helpful or coming to them while in bed to percuss in side-lying would also help. 4. IF the patient is also taking nebulizer treatments you may want to do this shortly after that treatment (ask your doctor when to do it in conjunction with the treatment)

If you dont have an extra set of hands, lie down on the floor(carpet is fine), get the stiffist pillow you have in your home, roll it like you are rolling carpet, you want it tight so you can have a lil height to it. As you are laying down place the pillow behind the area of pain and roll back and forth on the carpet. It cracks back muscles as well as drain the lungs. I do it every night and it feels amazing. I PROMISE it works, and this is for those who does not have an extra set of hands hanging around like myself 😂

Wait how can that loosen mucus in the lungs? I have this sponge thing I got for pool noodles at dollar tree. Maybe that will work
@arnellwashington5628
@arnellwashington5628 6 ай бұрын
@@sweetbeep you actually prefer something harder than a pool noodle, simply because you need that pressure. I use a 15 pound dumb bell and lay a very thin pillow that I have over it. I lay on the floor (not the bed) as it is a hard surface. I then roll my back on the dumb bell with the pillow. Girllllllllllllllllllllll, when I tell you it's life saving for me. I don't have an extra pair of hands to massage my knots out so I have to get creative. It works BETTER than a hot bath. It releases tension and mucus if you have any of that.
@arnellwashington5628
@arnellwashington5628 6 ай бұрын
@@sweetbeep also to think of the inside of your body like a map of the USA. Notice how states are connected through roadways and interstates? That's the anatomy and physiology of the inside of our bodies. Our veins, muscles, arteries are all connected. I release chest mucus by rubbing my feet and massaging my calf's as well. That's where acupuncture originated from. There are pressure points throughout your body that you press firmly and hold that takes care alot of our everyday issues. Look up "pressure points for mucus, you will find what I am referring too. Also if you have problems sleeping there are pressure points for that as well. Hot water and steam go along way with mucus.

Small space to your left, an office beside it, then the master bedroom, two rooms and a bathroom upstairs, deck outside that door leaving the kitchen, bathroom just behind you, garage to your right... Have not seen that house since my grandmother passed away 11 years ago. Also, thanks for the info, have some goop I can't seem to get rid of.

Well, unfortunately coughing is the only way to bring up the secretions. The good thing is that most toddlers have strong respiratory muscles so they are pretty effective at coughing stuff up.

Also, I was thinking to buy a steam therapy inhaler as well, would you recommend that and if so, should we use it before or after the percussion excercise? thank you so much for what you do, cheers

@@BreatheBetterwithElizabeth No, going to pediatrician tommorow.. yea its crazy, it went dorment for a bit, but then came back.. and we cant figure out what to do for him.. we do remedies like manuka honey, garlic, tumeric mix.. also, we have to basically force him to drink water otherwise he never does.. and we have been a little sketched out to bring him to hospital with everything going on, long story but a family member went for something else and ended up dying from something she caught at the hospital.. anyway, but now its definatly time, because its not going away.. any advice? I looked up symptoms of pnemonia after reading this, and I dont think its that.. he had a fever for 1 of the nights but it was gone by morning and he doesnt really get chills, and still has appetite, so I dont think its that.. there is this thing called RSV apparently going around, among other things like covid.. thanks for your help..

@@dappcity8260 that’s good that theirs no fever! It’s possible that it could be allergies depending on where you live. I’m in the US and live in Kentucky so most people have a persistent cough right now because of all of the allergens blooming. RSV typically has a fever as well, but not always.

You wouldn’t want to do percussion on someone with known blood clots because you could potentially dislodge the clot into the bloodstream.

My hubby is currently hospitalized with covid pnemonia. Heavily sedated on a ventilator. Would this work with him not being awake to cough the mucus up?
@BreatheBetterwithElizabeth
@BreatheBetterwithElizabeth 3 жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry to hear that!!! It’s not recommended for COVID patients due to the high rates of blood clots with COVID. The good thing is that if he is on a ventilator, then they are able to suction the mucus from his chest and do that regularly. I’m praying he gets better soon!

@shawntaejohnson5382
@shawntaejohnson5382 3 жыл бұрын
No, having a history of blood clots has the potential to not know you have one currently. Since blood clots can move, if percussion occurs it can move the clot & lodge it somewhere dangerous, increasing the risk for an embolism.
@BreatheBetterwithElizabeth
