Great video! As a non-Catholic, I have learned a lot from this series about the mass. When I've attended mass, I could appreciate the beautiful music, the scripture readings, the Gothic architecture of the Cathedral, etc. But I never really understood what was going on. The next time I go I'll be much more able to appreciate the beauty and symbolism of the mass itself. Not just the beautiful surroundings and music. The Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City where I live rings bells during that portion of the Eucharistic prayer. I never could understand why. Now I know. The Salt Lake diocese is very traditional. I look forward to going there again after having watched this series.

I agree with the addition to the first reading and responsarial psalm. I disagree with the reduction of incense used in mass to only few days of the year. Are there parts of the "old rite" that you feel should still be parts of the mass. For example I have read that V2 doesn't say the celebrant has to face the people. Does this mean he could still face east? Should we go back to receive while kneeling? Are there other parts of the TLM that should be in the new mass?

I had no idea this was originally a calling to look up and adore! I also had no idea I wasn't meant to saying personal prayers immediately before and after receiving communion. This series has been so helpful! Was this the last video in the series or will you be doing one more covering the closing rite/dismissal?

Glad to hear it! And just to be clear, I don't want you to think that saying personal prayers after receiving communion is wrong. What I said in the video is that it is "less appropriate," meaning that it's still a good thing to do, but it doesn't match the ideal of the situation. The ideal is that we not focus on ourselves and our personal needs, but join together, "in communion," to voice a prayer together in song. There's just something much more important going on at this time than our own personal experience.
@PlumfacesamaYTP

That makes a lot of sense. The prayer I usually say after communion is one of thanksgiving to God for allowing me to come to His table and share in communion with Him again. But with your information in mind, it might be better in future to save this for after the singing itself has ended and the instrumental is going on.

Good question. After communion we take the Body of Christ and place it in the tabernacle which is near the alter. At the next mass we take what is in the tabernacle and combine this with what may be needed from the unsanctified bread. When the bread is being sanctified it is appropriate that the Body of Christ remain in one area as that would be appropriate. Think of the left over bread that filled 12 baskets from only 5 loves. Reflect on how they gatherd what was leftover.

I respect and appreciate that our faith tradition is ever evolving in the context of a long and rich history and that this leads to people having their own views and opinions on things such as the mass. However, I am consistently mind blown with the way people almost talk down to, and with disrespect towards Father Casey. The amount of time and effort he has put in to help broaden and strengthen the understanding and faith of anyone viewing his videos is impressive and should, in itself, be respected. It shows a great lack of humility to be a member of the laity and talk down to someone who has spent YEARS in formation, and been found worthy of ordination. This doesn't mean we can't have questions and respectful discourse with an intent to grow in understanding. However, how is a member of the laity going to flat out tell a priest they are wrong for their teaching of our faith? I find the lack of humility or charity, and the disrespect to be very un-Christian. And now I am prepared for the possible un-Christian responses to what I have just said.

I think it's an interesting question (especially since you think that this video is the conclusion of the series!) Obviously, there is more to the mass: the final blessing and dismissal. I think what you share, intentionally and not, is that many people believe that all of the important things at Mass ends with communion, when it fact the final blessing and dismissal are integral components. What you'll see next week in the final episode of the series is that the final part of the mass gives us the entire lens to look through in "understanding the mass."

@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 5 жыл бұрын
What we are doing is taking place in the original sacrifice. We do not "re-sacrifice" Jesus on the altar, as some say about us. Rather, we are receiving what the letter to the Hebrews speaks about: Every priest stands daily at his ministry, offering frequently those same sacrifices that can never take away sins.But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat forever at the right hand of God; now he waits until his enemies are made his footstool. For by one offering he has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated. (Hebrews 10:11-14)

@@BreakingInTheHabit Thank you for the clarification. I remember an old vicar, who was a firm Anglican, always disliked the Roman Catholic's teaching on the sacrifice of the Mass. He felt the sacrifice took place "once and for all" at Calvary 2,000 years a go and that the Roman Rite got it wrong. In our Book of Common Prayer the wording at our communion is we offer our sacrifice of thanks and praise. It is hard, trying to understand the nuts and bolts of sacraments - your videos are helping with that, especially for non-Roman Catholics. Very helpful indeed.

Hosts are primarily kept in the tabernacle for use with the sick and infirm who cannot make it to mass. Additional hosts are consecrated to be brought to them. Secondarily, the tabernacle serves as a place for prayer and adoration. This practice rose to prominence in the high Middle Ages and many would say that it serves as the primary need for the tabernacle today.

@@briandelaney1300 Well, yes, this is a separate situation. Since a communion service is not a mass, there is no sacrifice being offered, taking from the tabernacle does not pose a problem; it is understood by everyone that they are sharing in the sacrifice of another mass. Obviously, this is not ideal though. We should not think of a communion service as being the same as a Mass, precisely because it leaves out everything in this video. The central prayer of the Church is not said, and no sacrifice is offered. This is, I think, why I stand so strongly against taking communion from the tabernacle during mass because it essentially gives some people a communion service while others have mass (so to speak. I hope you understand what I mean by that.)

Well, of course you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. You’re not supposed to. The Body and Blood are still under the same appearance as unconsecrated bread and wine. It comes down to trusting in the word of God. “This *is* my body.” If we are to truly believe Christ, we should never put this in a bag and shake the bag up with unconsecrated hosts. We should treat His Body with utmost reverence. Which is why I would argue we should never even touch it without consecrated hands, but I digress. By giving consecrated hosts due reverence, we would never need to worry about confusing it with normal bread.

Holy Mother Church has always recognized this and so given the one offering sacrifice precedent in the liturgy regardless of rank. Moreover, the Priest does not "preside over worship" nor does he "lead the sacrifice". Firstly, a cleric (priest, bishop or abbot) can celebrate Mass without any congregation whatsoever, but needs only an altar server who represents the angels, and apply the fruits of that Mass specifically to as many or as few as he wants, living or dead. (Of course, every Catholic in communion with the Holy Chair of Peter derives benefit from every Mass.) When a congregation is present, they do not directly or indirectly participate in any way in the Holy Sacrifice, which is exclusively done by the celebrant- not even by the altar servers or schola, which are embellishments- but the priest alone acts In Persona Christi in his role as a mediator between God and man. It is tragic that the "Reformed Church of Vatican II" has confused everybody as to their proper role in the Church, representing the Mass as some sort of agape or supper which it most certainly is not- the fact that the Mass is sometimes represented as a "mystical banquet" and that St Thomas Aquinas called the Eucharist the "Bread of Angels" notwithstanding.

(Reply continued- I always break up long replies because it is so easy to hit a wrong button and erase everything on KZbin.) It is true that Saint Paul told the Corinthians ""When you come therefore together into one place, it is not now to eat the Lord's supper." But this has nothing to do with the Mass, and it is unfortunate that people and clerics have applied this phrase to the Holy Sacrifice. Moreover, the Communion Service, properly so called, is not a part of the Mass, and the faithful should be taught as much. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. You are our only hope.

What this priest is saying is good on paper. That is all. He should go to Mass at the average Catholic Parish. See how many empty pews there are. Observe the lack of observable signs of any faith or piety, which has been massively eroded in the last 60 years.

Female altar boys. Holding hands and the Iran’s posture during the Our Father. IKEA table instead of an altar. You refer to the priest as a presider. Mass is not a dialogue between the presider and congregation. It’s a dialogue between God and the priest. Let’s ditch the Novus Ordo.

There is nothing forbidding female altar servers, holding hands or the "orans" position (as in the Latin for "the one praying, not "Iran's" as in the country). The "IKEA" table you're speaking about is made of solid stone, precisely as the Church imagines: fixed and sacred. And who says that it is a dialogue between the presider and God? The mass, the act of communion, must be a communal prayer of the people, not just of the priest.

John Smythe They are called acolytes, and it is preferred that they be adults. There is no reason that they be boys, and there is no data to show that the ministry leads to more priests (Further, can we diminish the liturgy to such a side goal? The ministry is important in itself.)

It's really important to understand that our Church didn't begin and end with the baroque period of European art, but has existed, for two thousands years, in many different ways and places. What you see is an example of one of the most ancient traditions of the Catholic Church, drawing on many ancient architectural designs of monastic life.
