I wish the nipple wasn’t blurred… there is multiple videos on here with real mama breasts… 😢 I used a straight ruler and it was 1/2 inch so roughly 13mm. Is this a good way to measure if you do t have a circular measuring device? Also silicone inserts or silicone flanges? I have the motif Luna. ❤

I know I’m so sorry about the blurred nipples- I’ve been trying to file appeals with KZbin but they keep denying my requests even though my content is educational 😫🤦‍♀️ it is really disappointing they are not supportive of this type of content. Using a straight ruler I find more challenging but as long as you follow these rules it is a way to find your size: Measure across the base of your nipple, where your nipple meets the areola. Do not measure your areola, just the width of your nipple. Add 4mm to your measurement! If you can find a properly fitting silicone flange I prefer that to an insert! If the size of the flange is right it will give you the best milk output, sometimes with the inserts there can still be air leakage! @@PassableParent Thank you for your response. 🥰🩷💜 I bought a 16 mm flange insert. Nipple diameter is 12.7 (I’m small!) The Motif Luna flanges are not removable on the top and there is no manufacturer that makes a full flange top silicone for the Luna. Sad bc I rather that as well. So only inserts. I will lubricate before use. Any pump brands you recommend as the best? Maybe I need to switch? I have searched the internet and cannot find the answer to why 4mm needs to be added? Can you provide insight as to why? Thank you for your help! It is hard to find direct answers online. 🩷💜

I know how confusing it can be! Most Mothers nipples & flange sizes are NOT the size the manufacturer gives for free with the pumps! As someone who used the wrong flange size with my first baby for quite some time I can tell you how much better it feels and better output once you figure this out😊 The reasoning behind adding 4mm is because your nipple size expands when it is pulled into the pump by the pump vacuum and this is to account for that! But unfortunately it’s not an exact science because while we don’t want your nipple being pinched at all by the pump (this is bad for your comfort and milk output) it’s also not good for anything but the nipple to be getting pulled into the pump too! This is why I love my little diameter circular ruler trick😅but I hope this helps give you an answer behind the 4mm! My personal favorite pump is the spectra - I have the S1 pump but the S2 is exactly the same- the difference between the models is that the s1 has a battery powered option where as the S2 does not and must always be plugged into an outlet. I did have to pay a bit extra for the S1 because insurance only fully covered the S2! It is by far my favorite pump though. I have tried medela etc myself but never the motif Luna! There are all the way down to size 13mm breast flanges on Amazon and inserts that I’ll attach links to here to help you but I see what you mean - they don’t say compatible with the Luna! It might be a trial and error for you since you really just want the nipple being pulled into the breast pump- not too tight to pinch the nipple but not too big that it’s pulling in anything else for the best milk output! I have a few ideas for you though that might help and not cost you a bunch: 1. The first- did you get the Luna through insurance? Every woman in the USA is entitled to a free insurance covered breast pump- if you have insurance and are in the USA then I will attach a link for you to pick one (I suggest the spectra because it’s my favorite and they have all the way down to 13mm flanges for it if you decide you don’t like the Luna pump with the inserts!) 2.My other idea is that if you’ve already gotten the Luna through insurance to try purchasing a medela hand pump. They have all the way down to 13mm flanges in Medela and the hand pump won’t cost you as much while you try to figure out your correct sizing. If you try this and it feels so much better with better milk output then you can think about paying for an electric that has your correct flange size!
