CGI Japanese animation always has the voice acting done first. Unlike hand-drawn, which can have simple lip flaps, 3D work needs realistic mouth movements to not creep out viewers. But I do agree that translating them is a nightmare. It's just like dubbing live-action.

Yeah, not sure why they chose that route. It's a lot easier to edit mouth flaps in a video game than it is in, say, an animated series. Would've really improved the quality of the voice acting, too.
@Shwaggie336 жыл бұрын
Well, since it originated in Japan, they most likely dubbed it in Japanese first, and then created the mouth movements for the game in regards to the Japanese voices. They then created the English dialogue that would fit in the time frame for the amount of time that each character speaks and what needs to be said based on the Japanese verses.

For people complainging: that can't really be avoided, some things said in Japanese really wouldn't make sense when translated into English. So there will be differences between what's said in Japanese and what you'll read in English, there really is no way around it. Things can sound amazing, or dramatic or whatever in Japanese and it'll be weak when translated into English, same can be the case for translating other way around. That said, while I definitely prefer the Japanese voice acting, I absolutely agree that it can be annoying read something completely different than what's being said. I can't say I agree with people who think the English voice acting is cringey though, imho the Japanese voice acting sounds more powerful and has more emotion to it but the English voice acting is by no means bad.

Yeah. I actually prefer Zelda's English voice tone and accent to the Japanese (she sounds pretty bland in my opinion), but the English VA seems completely unable to act any stronger emotions. Seems to be a problem with English voice acting in general to be honest, barring the very good professionals, English dubs simply can't pull off convincing crying or screaming. Don't know if it's because again, barring a few, Voice Actors in america are treated as third-rate actors and thus very few good actors stay in voice acting, or if it is a direction issue. But often that's where most English dubs fall flat.

Funny thing is it's not really a "dub" since the JP voice is the original voice, after all the script was written in Japanese 1st to be voiced in Japanese 1st.

I believe it’s pretty common for the English dubs to add words over parts that were just sounds or even just silent. I think it just has to do with different ways of expression, Japanese is very contextual and some emotions are conveyed with just a look or a grunt, which I guess is unnatural to English audiences.

I always find it cool to see how much the dialogue changes when switching languages. Since this is an overlay of the English it isn’t exactly a “translation” of what’s being said (but obviously the same things being conveyed) e.g. people bringing up the Revali scene. cool video :) that’s for doing this!

28:58 When Zelda first hears the Master Sword, for a brief second she's not sure she really heard "it" but then it speaks to her again. In the Japanese version, she seems to repeat/mirror what the sword says "he can be saved", and she answers back to the sword: "Link..?". I Love this so much because it look like an actual conversation. In the English Dub, it seems more like a deduction on Zelda's part because the sword it's glowing rather than she repeating back what the sword says.

If you played the game and read Zelda's diary it explains why Link remains silent. He talks to Zelda, not in any of the cut scenes, though.
@blackenblood217 жыл бұрын
That's my point... If you don't understand how it isn't weird that Link stands silent like a mute for thirty minutes, while the rest of the characters treat it like its normal, than there is something wrong with you. I am not even saying that he SHOULD talk, I am just commenting on how they did a terrible job making these cut scenes actually feel natural.

The scene where Link is down and the Master Sword shines, it's implied Zelda can hear Fi's voice in the Japanese dialogue. Like she's repeating what she heard said. Feels like it was translated by people who didn't understand the lore. The English dialogue makes it sound like Zelda is coming up with something, instead of Fi telling her something.
