When I played through the Yiga Clan hideout, I tried dropping both bananas and other fruits. The guards seemed to react happier when a banana was dropped but they also seemed fine with apples etc. We could probably assume that they do indeed eat other foods, but have a strange obsession for bananas.

Maz Koshia, the Shiekah monk you fight at the end of the Champion's Ballad quest, can be distracted by bananas, though only once. In an interview, the developers confirmed that the banana-obsession is a trait of the Shiekah as a whole, not just the Yiga. Make of this what you will.

TLDW - Eating 40 bananas in a day is probably not the healthiest thing to to xpxp Also SOMETHING I WANT TO POINT OUT REGARDING THE VIDEO AT 5:50 I sort of contradicted myself with that first and second point. What I meant in regards to the first point was that I would assume the sheikah had the same body structure in terms of a human, they just can live longer. I mean, they appear to grow food like a human, so it is safe to assume they are like us and need the same nutrients. Second, I only counted proteins because I wanted to be generous and give these guys the best possible chance to live on a a banana only diet, but even THAT would still end up probably killing them (Even though I said they would be fine, remember I was only talking about one of MANY things they would need). And that's basically it....not meaning to troll people with that ending, but wanted to make it into an interesting topic for you guys. I could have just said "they would die", but why do that when you can learn about Potassium and hyperkalemia? ;))) So thanks for watching! Hmm... Or maybe Mighty Bananas have a different composition than regular bananas. It's possible that, rather than being just regular bananas, they could actually contain equal amounts of all the nutrients needed to sustain a human body, causing the Sheikah (as we see with Maz Koshida(?)) and later the Yiga to be obsessed with them due to them having everything they needed, compacted into one convenient, easy-to-transport food, perfect for a tribe/clan of ninjas constantly on the move. This is just speculation, of course, but it would still explain a lot. Yes, I saw the screenshot, but maybe they don't just have a lot of protein, but all nutrients, making them perfect for the Sheikah/Yiga.

even though the shiekah are possibly my favorite zelda race. They sure do have a tendency to turn on each other and cause civil unrest. It's interesting how the discovery of the yiga clan might reopen other older theories that bring up the possibility of turned shiekah creating things that lead to certain stories in the series. Like the theories that say a group of shiekah were banned to the twilight realm are said to have created the fused shadow. Breath of the wild doesn't cease to impress or cause intrigue.

What complicates matters is that according to the DLC, the love of bananas pre-dates the split between the Sheikah and the Yiga - a statement that's supported by what happens when you drop a banana during the second phase of the Maz Koshia fight. Also, no matter what single foodstuff it is, if you only ever eat one type of food you will starve. Master Kohga doesn't exactly look starved judging by his movements (which, while uncoordinated and mostly slow, don't exactly look weak - he does spins, stands on one leg, et cetera during his fight), and nor do the other Yiga - so a more logical explanation would probably be that they do eat normally with the exception of Master Kohga who overeats, but neither you nor the captive Gerudo lady ever see it. Also, fun theory of mine: Master Kohga actually eats the exact same amount as the other Yiga, but his inactive lifestyle means that Master Kohga is massively overeating on what for the other, more physically active Yiga would be a healthy diet.

I did some more research on Matsuo Basho, to see if I could find some connection there. Appearntly Basho was not his real name but taken, it actually means Banana tree. He got one (and later more) from his apprentices. He wrote several poems about banana trees aswell. However no real connection could be made more than what you already discovered.

Hi, I liked your video :) Just so you know, blood level of nutrient are not always linked with dietary intake. We have homeostasis in the body meaning our body will keep similar level of blood level as much as possible. It will regulate intestinal absorption accordingly to body need. Of course every nutrient are specific and while some can be taken at mega doses (for instance you can take 200 years worth of B12 supplement at once without side effect) other need to be restricted to daily allowance (maximum calcium is only 4 times the RDA). Potassium have no upper tolerable limit so you can technically easily eat 4 times the RDA or even 10 times without problem. There are people eating a only banana diet (consisting of aroung 50 banana a day) and people eating potatoes only diet etc... If not done for too long, it's not to bad, but in the long run every food item lack some nutrient so every mono diet will be deficient at some point (banana have no vitamin D, B12, iodine, not enough zinc vitamin E, K, À, omega3&6 fatty acid and essential amino acid methionine and cysteine, it has also too much sugar and not enough fat compared to what every institution recommends) To finish, a disease associated with elevated blood level of a nutrient doesn't mean that eating a lot of this nutrient will cause the disease. For instance let's imagine that a storing function of vitamin D is messing in someone, leading to over-storing and elevated blood level of vitamin D doesn't mean that if you take high doses supplements you will have similar symptoms and disease. (taking high dose of supplemental vitamin D is not good for other reasons, but moderate doses are recommended for a lot of human depending on where we live)

My theory on yiga's origin: The war like faron tribe, described on the barbarian armor, are ancient sheikahs from long before 10,000 years ago. They were banana eating, combat loving sheikah who thrived in the faron woods. They fled their land because Farosh and its electricity were killing sheikah. They moved into the necluda region, keeping their eating habits. But being farther away from their bananas meant that they had to eat less, resulting in the thin, sheikah monks appearance. Their thin bodies meant that they were far weaker in combat, so they shifted their motives less towards combat and more towards technology. The sheikah made hundreds of guardians and four divine beasts for four other tribes. After some time though, the hylians, being rulers, demanded that guardians stop being made and the divine beasts get baried, fearing that they turn against them. The sheikah were forced to go back to their pre-botw lore days. This made some of the sheikah very angry. They wanted to go back to their ways in faron. Banana eating combat loving. They wanted to be very far from the sheikah, but still have the somewhat mountain like terrain of faron. They settled in the gerudo highlands. The people in this group hate the sheikah, hylians and anyone that sides with them. They called themselves the Yiga clan, adopting a symbol opposite of the sheikah. The Yiga pledged alleigence to calamity ganon, hoping it would take hyrule castle and the hylians once again.They stayed like that for thousands of years, until they heard that people were getting the feeling that calamity ganon is returning. People were proposing digging up the divine beasts. The Yiga thought of that as terrible, until someone thought about malice corrupting the beasts. The divine beasts seemed different though. They wouldn't move and rotate like they used to, making the Yiga think that they were more susceptible to malice. Come the day of the calamity returning, it took over the divine beasts and guardians and killed most of hyrule's population, being hylians. 100 years pass and the hero has awoken. A hylian devoted to defeat ganon. Hearing that, the Yiga steal the thunder helm from the gerudo to have the hero come and return it. Some of them went out on their own to kill the hero, but no luck. The hero got the thunder helm, killed their leader, and freed vah naboris. The Yiga split up to try and kill link, and here we are today

Also Nali in Gerudo town says that they are full of protein and calories, so maybe since they are mighty bananas they have extra protein

I just always assumed they were obsessed with bananas because they might get scurvy by living up in the mountains all the time, with a very limited diet (the only other stuff would be bird or other meat, or wildberries.)
