It's always enjoyable to watch Bob Hope read off of the cue cards.
@danielfronc43045 жыл бұрын
Even when he came to Baltimore in the late seventies or early eighties he did that too. My fire chief brother-in-law was serving as the on site Fire Marshall and told me of it. He said there wasn't a word that came out of Hope's mouth which wasn't on the cue cards. He, and I, lost all respect for the Englishman who worked his way up the hard way on the Vaudeville circuit, without the benefit of cue cards. Makes you wonder if he was just worried about flubbing a line, was lazy, or had truly lost his talent for improv.

I was sitting in my automobile at a red light in Palm Springs one day when a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce drove up beside me. I looked into the backseat and there was Bob Hope. I waved at him and he saluted to me. I didn’t see any q-cards. (True story!)

In his younger days, he was an incredible ad-libber, especially with his pals Jack Benny and George Burns. They were such close friends, that, at Jack's funeral, when George was too distraught to finish the eulogy, Bob stepped to the mike, and ad-libbed the perfect line. He said, "This is the first time Jack's timing failed. He left us much too soon."

I'm almost 65, and when I was a teen I totally didn't get how funny these guys were. On a side note, in 1987 I was at O'Hare airport in Chicago picking up my wife and the in-laws (this was when you could still go to the gate without having a ticket), and Tommy Smothers got off first, obviously because he was travelling first class, and I said "Hi Tommy" as he walked by me, and he said hi back. Later I had to check which one was Tommy and which was Dick. Luckily I was correct!

Wowww..how ironic...CBS first gave Campbell this show (The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour) in January, 1969 based on his highly rated summer show from ‘68......THAT program was the summer replacement show for, of all people, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS....in April 1969, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was cancelled by CBS despite high ratings....this episode of TGCGH was from September, 1971....quite surprised CBS allowed the Smothers Brothers on the program; in light of the fact that the Brothers were embroiled in a breach of contract lawsuit against the network at that time...

It was the Smothers who had the idea to give Glen his own show (in fact, it was called The Summers Brothers Smothers Show) as a sort-of tryout for what became the Goodtime Hour. Glen was always quick to acknowledge how Tommy & Dick basically gave him his TV career and showed him how to do a variety show

@brianoneill71866 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they ever appeared on one of Bob's specials. But Bob was open to going on 'the other networks' and variety shows with people he might otherwise not have worked with. The Smo Bros were the guests on the final weekly episode of Jack Benny's show in '65.

I saw the very first Glen Campbell Show...the Beatles used to send the tapes of their latest songs to be played on the Smothers Brothers. But for some unknown reason the Glen Campbell Show inherited this agreement and I had to listen to Glen Campbell's mother play Turkey in the Straw before I could get my Beatles fix. I would very much appreciate anyone confirming or denying my memory of these events, which are not in any way influenced by my belief that Donald Trump is an asshole.
