Petstore bettas come from some local breeders and Thailand. Having been to the facility that supplies the stores the bettas come in absolutely beautiful condition but often end up in poor condition due to petstore care. As with anything there are always going to be good and bad and that goes for breeders too. Just because a betta is imported or comes from a breeder doesn't guarantee a healthy betta fish. Having said all that care and responsibility with breeding should always be a top priority and the best fish available chosen. I believe you've done that. You have breed with care and have also chosen to show us your failures which takes courage and shows character. If we as fish tubers only show the good, and make everything seem perfect that's not reality, people can't learn from that. Very often mean comments are not from people with experience but from hearsay. Those that genuinely what to help and critique will do it with kindness and no other agenda. Don't let others sway what you want to do and what think is right once you've considered all your options. You're great at what you do, keep it up:)

Lifewithpets I wish I had been able to see that when I visited Thailand- it would be so cool to have seen where they all come from. I agree petstores (in the US) are normally really bad with bettas. I know there is a petstore in Sweden which keeps them all in 2.5 gallons, even though that's 1/4 the minimum (I'm all for animal rights and PETA says 10 gal is minimum) but compared to US petstores that's huge and well they can technically live there. Back when I lived in Germany and got Betta fish I'm not sure how big the tanks were but they were in 5-20 gallon tanks (I really don't know sorry) with some other fish. I know there was 2 tanks with some females and then the males were spread out with some other fish. I think my last one that I had which was a while ago was with guppies.

I don't see a problem with starting a line from pet store fish. There are a lot of reasons why a baby betta might end up a pet store, from being the culls of a higher end breeder to maybe the unanticipated fry of an inexperienced keeper. If you see a quality or trait you desire in a pet store fish, go for it! But it is a good thing to be aware that they may be culls and may therefor have genetic traits that are undesirable. It may take a little longer to get the traits you want when starting out with a lower quality fish, but it can still be done. Keep it up CPK!
@CreativePetKeeping7 жыл бұрын
I have always wondered where do the petco bettas REALLY come from. Sometimes they are in poor shape..but once in a while you find really great fish. The fact that they might be culls from good breeders is an interesting theory...hmm... Thanks for the support! ❤❤❤

Don't let the mean/rude comments get you down. You do you sweetie no matter what! Honestly people who say breeding pet store fish is a bad thing, stop and think, where did the "experienced breeders" start? Did "good quality" fish just poof out of thin air? Don't think so, they were probably purchased from a pet store and through selective breeding the lines improved. Besides no everyone has the funds to import a fish...and quality fish aren't cheap not to mention shipping costs plus customs fees if they are coming from another country, that's a lot to drop on one fish. Anyway you are such a joy to watch and an inspiration. keep up your awesome work!

Shipping costs are what are currently keeping me from getting nice imports..but oneday I hope to be able to afford one ^_^

Honestly, I think pet store bettas are fine as long as they look pretty healthy and what-not. But getting a betta from a breeder is always better. It's a very 50/50 thing. I don't think it's cool for people to be mean about your decision. You do whatever you think is best!!!

You're doing a good job, espcially for your first time breeding. I appreciate you taking us along on the journey. Everyone makes mistakes, no one is perfect and yeah people have their opinions but as long as you are learning from your mistakes and journey then you are fine. We all have made mistakes in our hobby. From what I can see, and i'm sure alot of us can see you love your fish and you do your best to care for them. They look happy and healthy. You go girl! Keep the videos coming! We enjoy them!

Kasia try not to let people get to you. Here's the thing you're breeding pet store quality fish for pets. You don't intend to be selling them as show quality. Almost everyone who starts are starting with pet store quality. I think as long as you're honest with the people purchasing the bettas and culling ethically it's fine!

Honestly this annoys me. Unless people are worried about the care of your fish, or you're harming your fish, or they're not being properly taken care of, there is no reason for that. You're doing a great job, they're happy and healthy and that is the best thing to ask for with fish. That's what you're aiming for. If I see trolls or spam comments I'll report them. 💪❤️
@kyuzen78027 жыл бұрын
Hello Kasha, welcome to the internet/youtube where every commenters have masters degree on how to keep a fish compared to actual people who own or breed them. You call yourself a beginner but so far the videos I have watched, you have entertained and have given more knowledge on how to take care of your fish than I have ever known about myself. So keep up the good work and avoid trolls/haters cause they bring nothing but negative than actually go out of their way to help you.

Yeah don't let people bring you down ok Your doing a good job for your first time.

I'm also a newer IBC member, and there is so much to learn! I think that "Pet Store" Betta can be just as good, you just might have less history to go on. Perhaps people were taking thoughts on pet store veiltails in regards to being show fish, and applying it to all pet store fish? Either way, do what feels right for you and your life, not what others want/expect from you, we'll still be here! :)

Which one did you use as a thumbnail for your vlog? - How do you trim a fish? Underwater? Is it like cutting hair and nails for us? Can one actually tell if a fish is high quality beyond it being healthy? Thanks and cheers!

Creative Pet Keeping, your videos help me improve my fish keeping! I have a baby guppy, and I fed it finely crushed flakes, but it wasn't super fine, so it didn't eat a lot, and then I decided to go to my local fish store, and they sold Repashy Gel food, so I bought it, and now it always has a full belly! My other fish love it too.

Don't worry about negative comments; they are usually from negative people! Instead of worrying about what someone else thinks, do what you think is best. You are the one doing the Betta breeding and you're as smart or maybe smarter than the person who is making negative comments. Who's to say they are right and you are wrong? Enjoy what you're doing, don't worry about pleasing everyone because you won't be able to; so, do what makes you happy!

Kasia, your help has been invaluable to me your bettas are beautiful. I'm not up for breeding but the things you inform us about regarding marble bettas was facinating. I'm just wondering what you feel might happen if you bred two different tail types together?
@CreativePetKeeping6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad to be able to help 😊 from what I heard, when you breed two tail types it depends on the genetics. For example, crossing a dumbo witb anything other then a dumbo will make it not show up as its recessive. I'm not sure about other tail types just yet as I'm still learning about it.

Hailey Klink Does he look bloated? He might be constipated :'/ You might want to skip feeding him for 2-3 days if it's constipation. Are his poops normal & brown? Clumpy or stringy uneven poop would be a sign of constipation.

I really love watching your videos because they're relaxing and beautiful to watch. As a fish keeper myself i enjoy caring and breeding my fish (Mostly Angel fish) the way i want to. Sometimes, even when i have fry that come out with diseases and swimming problems; i'd still care for them until they day they die (instead of euthanizing them). That being said, everyone has their own way of doing things. However, as i recalled the one time i was watching Moon River Bettas' video about her gold fish that was sick and that she wanted to euthanize the fish to stop the fish from suffering the disease even though the fish was somewhat important to her. So i posted a comment on her channel wondering "If that fish was so important to her then why not care for it until whatever happens?" and i saw your comment on her video as well saying that people were judging her!. I wanna say that you're probably just reading too much into it and thinking that people are judging you, but really everyone may just be curious as to why you're doing what you're doing. Sometimes people just have questions and opinions as to why you'd euthanize your fish if you love them (because you certainly wouldn't do that to someone you care about). So those are questions and opinions and not JUDGEMENT about the way you care for your fish. So i think you shouldn't stress yourself out too much and keep up with the good work because i think your videos are awesome!!!

I’m thinking of getting into breeding them. Your channel gives a lot of good insight. When (or if) I do jump into it, I’m going with pet store bettas too. My male is a teal body, red fin crowntail that I think could make some really nice spawn with the right female. From my point of view, I don’t want to spend $50 on an $8 fish that, frankly, I know as much about as a pet store. If it doesn’t work with a pet store fish, at least I can be happy with an $8 fish as a pet. If it doesn’t work with a premium betta, now I’ll always know I could got a pair of cichlids for the same price as my betta. That doesn’t seem worth it to me.

I just got a betta a few days ago :D Hes a silver dragonscale. (similar to the one you had) He is the most chilled out betta ive seen. Infact i can't get him to flare at all. I show a mirror and he ignors his reflection. He was in a tank with cherry barbs at the lfs and he didn't care they were there. Hes eating well and seems healthy. Is he not flaring because he isnt settled in yet or is he just a peaceful fish? im not sure if i should be concerned :L Also because he has such a chilled nature id love to get some tank mates but im limited by his tank size, which is only 6 gallons. My lfs said pygmy corydoras, white cloud minnows, ember tetras or cherry/dream blue shrimp would be okay. I asked life with pets what she thought and she said 6 gallons is too small for any fish other than a betta. Personally I thought 5 pygmy corys would be fine in a tank this size but i dont want to be irreponsible. What are your thoughts? (sorry for the long comment)
@briannaharter44117 жыл бұрын
I would go with shrimp,snails or maybe afircan darwf frogs.
@CreativePetKeeping7 жыл бұрын
As long as he is eating well and a bit active then he should be fine. Make sure his fins are not clamped and relaxed. Since you got him a few days ago he might not have the muscles developed to swim around so much (bettas in cups or small containers don't move a lot ) ..so just moving around the tank gets him a little tired..so he does not want to flare as that takes up a lot of energy. Give him another two weeks to adjust. As he gains confidence and gets settled in the tank..he might get sassy and be willing to flare at ya. For a 6 gal you are pretty limited on the amount of fish. The easiest option would be to get some shrimp IMO..they are peaceful and wont bother your betta..but the movement will be interesting for him to observe.
@jacksmith64607 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ive decided to go with shrimp and hope that he doesn't kill them. His fins are always opened up but not fully extended as if hes flaring, just normal. He is very active, doesn't stay still for long. He does glass surf quite a bit though. Hopefully that will stop doing that soon.

i want to add around 5 adult females bettas. can i add multiple females in the same tank?

viviana camacho yes , but it doesn't work every single time. I would suggest at least a 10 gallon that's extremely planted or a 20 gallon. Also do your research :)

I will be beginning my betta breeding journey on youtube soon, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice about how to get more viewers, how to deal with hate, and maybe some of the biggest mistakes you made that you didn't talk about in this video? Also, is there a way to turn the new life spectrum fry starter into gel food?

Dont listen to alot of people, you will find your groove amd stick with it. Look up betta territory and you will see he started a whole line from pet store bettas and started linebreeding them and has very beautiful bettas. I love how u talk alot and talk all the way through your videos. Keep up the good work. I also breed bettas and been working on my own line and it take years to get what u want as soon as u figure out what you are wanting. Once u figure out where u wanna go with it and what u wanna work on first thats where u should start. Either color , fins , size ,or body. Start with one and work your way to your quality that u want. Maybe one day you and i can get some bettas from each other and see what we get from breeding our line with eachothers bettas. Look up my facebook page on bettas. B&C Betta's Of Ohio. Hooe to see u there. Thanks. For all your info and hope we can help each other out.

I see no problem with breeding pet store bettas. It's what I'm going to do, and my petsmart bettas are freaking awesome (well some). They have several really pretty ones. I have one veiltail I got the other day and he's beautiful.
