"he or she who has the greatest capacity for discomfort, rises the fastest" (48:52). . . "the two most powerful words when someone is in shame or in pain: me too, I get it, you're not alone" (59:09) - this is exactly why I write honestly and vulnerably in the comments section, because what I am most hoping for is to hear back "me too; I get it; you're not alone in this experience/ perception/ struggle.. . . "do not ascribe to malice, that which can be ascribed to ineptitude" - "the hypothesis of generosity: what's the most generous assumption I can make about this person's words, actions or behaviors" (1:05:13)

Her answer after 44:00. Seriously, important reminder about who you value, with whom you share your vulnerable self. We don’t have to share with everyone every time. Also boundaries. Be consistent, for your own sake. It literally changes relationships be it to be healthier or end unhealthy ones.

Brene' & Chase. I learned a lesson recently. People ask me advise often on how I reversed some chronic health issues. I use to try telling them what I did and what worked for me. But, immediately saw walls go up around them and felt like I was wasting my breath and being tuned out. Telling people what to do is problematic. If it doesn't work as they expected, they point the blame finger at me. What I found that has a great impact is asking a simple question, "On a scale from 1 to 10, what are YOU willing to do to reverse your health issue..?" This puts the responsibility back on them. If I don't hear an 8 or higher in their answer, I tell them, "I don't think I can help you at this point." If they say, "9 or 10", I say how much time do you need from me. I have too many people that will do what ever it takes. Not everyone completely heals, but a large percentage greatly improve. I don't have the time to listen to someone who only wants to bitch about feeling sick. If they are truly looking for a solution and are at a place of being receptive to healing information, I have all the time in the world. It's tough for someone to face this reality when I would love to save the world. But, as you know, saving the world is not my responsibility. It is the responsibility of everyone to remain receptive to information that may help.

This is where the person needs to engage in some work around Resistance. Many times people genuinely believe they want change, but are unaware of the things that are in the way. With therapy, they can be helped to uncover these areas of resistance and melt them away in order to clear the road for real change. Therefore I don’t abandon people who are “ unwilling“ to change but take a couple of steps back and help them discover what’s in the road.
@rdkuless

@@sallymitchell6423 "you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink" and you cannot make them look at the world in a different way unless they are willing to do what is necessary.. Doing it for them only makes you an enabler. On a scale of 1-10, what are YOU willing to do to change this..? Real change comes when we learn to do and do to learn. I don't abandon people either, I simply don't push until they make a commitment to do the work.
@sallymitchell6423
@sallymitchell6423 4 жыл бұрын
Rob K I don’t believe I’m disagreeing with you, and didn’t mean to infer that you abandon people. I just mean that there can be reasons why someone is invested in the issue they say they’d like to change, that they aren’t even aware of. So there is an extra piece of work here to help them uncover what this resistance is, if they want to do that work.

15:08 "...our emotions take the first crack at making sense of something..." Wow, (to me) that is the whole ballgame right there. If more of us were aware of that, and could detach from the moment long enough to remember it, oh what a world it would be. Thanks to Brene and you both!

Way to rock Chase! These are awesome. For me, the negative comments are a sign that you're doing something right as a creative or an entrepreneur. Although we want to fight, we need to realize that these negative comments are signs that we had the courage to put ourselves out there and that's why we're here - to create.

This is so cool! I think Brene has a really good way of calling out things that are painful, but she does it in such an empathetic way that I don't feel pain. I think Chase is being vulnerable on this show, by being his authentic self. It's awesome. Thank you for creating your art and helping others create. Last year I had to watch this a couple times for one of my classes. This year I'm to watch it again with a new perspective. so to start I went over what I wrote last year and I want to just write some of the things I wrote that stood out to me and the quote or concept here that brought me to that. "Perfection is preventing you from being who you are meant to be" - We are not meant to be perfect and that is great. It means we can always be learning and growing. It means that you today is a you that has never existed & will never exist again. Embrace the moment of you. "Boundaries are key in open and honest and clean communication" - It is considered selfish to put your needs before others but they are needs for a reason. So be selfish because why will others stand up for you if you don't stand up for yourself. I'll update with more later should more stick out to me, but this video is honestly so inspiring, and I want to send a thank you to my professor, although I doubt she'll see this, for introducing me to this video, but also for being such an incredible person who has helped me out so, so much.

To me this is the true gospel, the teachings of Brene Brown. I have been so healed by this woman's work, she has so much wisdom and guidance that frees me a little bit more everyday. 35:00 is so powerful for me having been abandoned by both my parents by the time I was eight and realizing at age 42 that I will never have the kind of relationships with either parent that I've always dreamed of. I now know that's okay and I know understand that who my parents are and were has nothing to do with me or who I am.

25:30 reckoning w/ emotions 34:20 creativity, loveability, divinity 34:33 just because someone didn't understand / put value on sth I created doesn't change its worth/ my worth. 34:42 no one is ordained to take our story of faith, our story of spirituality & say it's real/ not / based on who we are/ who we love / what we believe in. 34:56 our loveability, just because someone doesn't have the CAPACITY/ the ABILITY to love us, doesn't change our loveability. IT DOESN'T MAKE US UNLOVEABLE just because someone couldn't love us. Is there sth about me that's UNLOVEABLE? & That is profoundly dangerous narrative. 35:30 when u own the story u get to write the ending. 35:40 I am the author of my life. I will decide how the story ends. 37:30 I hear u. I get u how u want to protect me. I'm good. Thanks 39:30 tell you're 25 year old self: All the PLEASING, PROOVING & PERFECTING of what you're doing is getting in the way of what you're supposed to be doing. U will, can never live the life u want to live & not disappoint other people. U'LL NEED TO CHOOSE NOW. You're gonna pissed some people off. You're gonna let down some people. Not everybody going to like everyone. 48:40 he/ she who has the GREATEST Capacity For Discomfort RISES the FASTEST! 50:35 the only thing experience gives you is a little grace, that whispers in your ear, that you've been in the dark before, u know you're way through. Stay in the dark, it's gonna be ok. 51:10 I KNOW THAT I WILL COME OUT OF THIS! 53:20 2 important seeds in the arena are #selfcompassion & #empathy 58:10 antidote for shame is #empathty 1:01:20

3/2/2020 As I’m watching this right at the point where Brene’ is telling of a speaker (with authority in the arena) completely tear down a person without using a name. This happened to me twice in church. One was a pastor had called me into his office (with my 3 year old) to tell me how shitty I am because my heart with GOD is charismatic... Then on Sunday morning he gets up to the pulpit an speaks of a “certain woman” in the congregation blah, blah, blah.... The next was years later and another pastor writes a letter to every member, both near and far, to tear me apart....700 letters. I was at this church because I loved the people and GOD said to be there... I’ve since been basically around the world and visited (and ministered) in many churches and figured out if I’m not welcome, drop their stuff and keep going. I’ve been happy in a recovery ministry where I teach “Who you are in Christ” and am so wonderfully accepted. I’ve been listening to you for a few years and thank you for all you share. I like you bunches!!!

The bless your heart thing is a perfect example of what Brene talks about. Where she's from it has that negative meaning but where I'm from there seems to be no malicious intent (said to someone who's sweet or struggling with something, it's a very casual thing to say in passing), therefore a Texan might interpret that in a negative way even if the intention of the person who said it was good.

“Bless your heart” CAN mean “I know this is hard for you, but I can’t relate”. It’s not necessarily bad, sometimes it’s just true. Mean people say it to be mean; nice people say it when they don’t know what else to say but they want you to know they sympathize. That’s what my mama taught me anyway.

Finally I hear about this "Bless you heart"saying which drives me ...:-)) Have lived in Dallas for almost 20 years, came from Europe and always perceived this saying as condesceding. Typical bible belles responses when they don't want to feel pain and to go into place of compassion, but feel obliged to say something. 56th minute: funny, especially coming from Brene, who is a Texan. Thank you!

Absolutely, wisdom comes with age. We are all unique so we need to accept ourselves own yourself. Thoughts, actions consequences and people react you have no control of their reaction.

Alex you are Chinese. You have a very difficult time being vulnerable and honest. You guys are emotionally constipated a Famous Chinese person explained this to us in a room full with people. And in order to be really great leader , you have to be able to be truthful to your followers and to the world. Helping loving caring is higher then always winning. Love is true strength & power not force & money.

Hi myassessment adres (what name would you prefer me to call you?), I am Chinese, and while a huge part of Chinese culture is pervasive within us, our local (country) culture also have a fairly large influence on how we respond with vulnerability. I'm also a Christian from a cell-based church that promotes community and accountability, and I'm fortunate to have a community that is able to hold each other truthfully, and gently. I agree with your statement on the need to be truthful, and the need to be loving and caring. I believe in coaching for compassion, rather than for compliance. I'm wondering though if your statements seem to imply that all people who are Chinese are naturally emotionally constipated, and favouring winning above helping, loving and caring. If that were the case, I would caution against stereotyping. :) If you haven't already, do come by Singapore one of these days to see what our culture is like. We are largely Asian, but we are also a melting pot of cultures.

Alex Wong So you have been an upgraded person because of The Lord, that is a good thing, to hold with clear rules, righteousness, fairness just like what the bible teach us to deal with daily problems, with eachother ,tough life situations, respect God and His rules. When we follow the strict rules, we can stay vulnerable at the same time. Being vulnerable is just like dare to look at, all kinds of emotions, that all different kind of people are truthfully facing at certain moments in life. Then I think the Bible is even better then Brené her work. She only mentioned one little small aspect about how to deal with our weaknesses, new situations and the human path of learning process, but Gods Bible teach us even more topics like life is bigger then what you can see, feel and measure AND winning in the name of The Lord is actually a good thing, be the best you can be is encouraged, fulfill your Life 's purpose & Gods purpose is a good thing . Maybe someone can clarify The Christian teachings and principles and do research on that. What about you Alex ? You are good in writings allready, you can do it ! But some of the Chinese ancient teachings & wisdom is also just like what God tried to point out to us. like Love & Justice is sometimes the same thing, and that is what a true leader needs to face. Great point Alex I would love to visit your church & community one day. Thanks for asking. Ohh I forgot one thing, To summerize her work is : it is ok not to succeed the first times, just keep on trying to do good but while trying stay in balance between your mind and your heart and have compassion for yourself and others who are hard working . Having compassion is NOT a weakness.
