One night in 1989, I was hanging out with the girl who was the love of my life (though she didn't know it), and she had just put this CD single in the stereo while we were sitting next to each other talking. She used to get bad headaches, and I rubbed her head, and she leaned on me and fell asleep. I couldn't believe she was that close to me, and I was jumping for joy on the inside, but on the outside I stayed put so as not to disturb the moment. The CD was on repeat, and I must have listened to this song like 20 times, as I sat there in the dark, slowly stroking her hair. I wouldn't have traded that moment for anything, because I still believed. We're still friends, and that's all we've ever been, but this song reminds me of how much I wished we had been more.

For those who don't know, Brenda Starr is the person who helped Mariah Carey get her big break. After unsuccessfully trying to get her demo tape to people who could notice her, Brenda who was already famous at the time, took Mariah along to a party attended by big wig music executives. Mariah was lucky enough to get her demo tape into the hands of Sony boss, Tommy Mottola. Tommy listened to the tape in his car and spent 2 weeks trying to find Mariah again. If it wasn't for Brenda Starr, Mariah's career might have taken a different turn and she wouldn't have brought out all those songs including this one to us fans to enjoy.

I absolutely love this classic cut from Brenda but Mariah's no question is the better of the two and probably my second favorite Mariah Carey song behind Always Be My Baby so I disagree about Brenda's being better, mainly cuz Brenda while her voice is solid throughout, she sounds like she's singing Karaoke thru half the song...she gets better towards the climax and there's something about that Karaoke way of her singing that I still love so again Brenda's is no doubt a classic but Mariah's is my favorite and of course I respect your opinion as well

Mariah wound up with the record deal, married Tiny Motolla the P resident of the label..he treated her like a prisoner..she divorced him..then, her career took off. In the summer of 1988 or 1989 I was at an Insurance convention in Orlando with my brother. We were both dressed in a very nice suit and tie. The Hotel adjacent to our had many limousines arriving. We walked over to see what the fuss was about. Evidently 2 VIP guests canceled. We were given front row seats to the show. Brenda K Starr came out and put on a hell of show. She came down and sang this song while sitting on my lap/knee for a minute or two. It was a night I'll never forget.

Mommy D both great but Mariah voice is better. Mariah is soprano singer, she has 5/6 octaves range (and she hit 7 in the 90's) she has 4 notes and her longest Note was 20 seconds. She also has amazing abilities and skills...great vibrato, and great control . she sings very low to very high...She has perfect whistle register and amazing vocal acrobatics...she has great melisma, her runs and riffs are complex and creative even then Whitney...she sings with a lot of emotions too.
