I first bought a medium ALICE pack back in 1990 from a surplus store,used it in basic training ( british army ) as we were still using the old 58 pattern webbing along with the totally useless large pack. We were encouraged to buy our own rucksacks and was glad I got one. I used it for years and picked up a frame for it in a PX store in Germany. It went on 3 tours of Bosnia and a tour of kosovo with me and never let me down. 29 years later and I still have it 😊 built to last in my opinion

@@scotiushobius I have both, the large was used for lugging the majority of my kit but day to day I used the medium. It carried everything I needed no problem. The large is good but when it's full it just sits there,like a giant green lump. Get a medium. For the large I'd look at something else ( I went back to using my issue PLCE one)

Recon Marine from the 80's. We would adjust which ruck we used based on length of mission. Typically we used the medium without the frame, but the large was the most common one we used. They jumped well, carried everything we needed with room left to spare (sometimes....). From 91-2010 I was in the Army Light Infantry, and used my gear from the Marines without fail. Well done and Semper Fi.

The irony is the newest pack for the Corps, the FILBE, has been failing recently. Since folks are beating the war-with-Russia drums again, the Corps has been doing a lot more arctic training in Norway and Alaska, and the plastic frames are snapping in the cold. Supposedly they are bringing out a reinforced version. Wonder how many grunts are just going to use the old LG ALICE? Something a lot of people don't know is that the side pockets on the ALICE packs were tunneled like that to carry your cross country skis for arctic warfare use. Another complaint about the packs is they don't carry heavy weight as well as the new packs. But folks forget that these were designed when grunts mostly walked into combat. THey were supposed to be used along with belt gear, which is where all your heavy stuff, like ammo, grenades, e-tool, canteen, etc were carried, not in the pack. If one wants a milsurp hiking pack, then there is no better than the ILBE, as it's literally an Arc'Teryx Bora 80 hiking pack in MARPAT. Of course, the corps ditched it because it was horrific when wearing armor, making it a crappy combat pack.

The newer frames were intended to flex with the wearer's movement, to enhance comfort. Of course, flex means fatigue and plastic generally does not like cold.

When I joined the Corps, all we had was the alice pack, and i loved it. Eventually, it was replaced with the molle pack which i used in Iraq. I’ve recently re-enlisted after a 9-year break(army this time; too old to go back to the marines) and i use a filbe pack with alice frame and it’s holding up pretty well. I don’t care much for the UCP gear they issue us. As a matter of fact, i buy most of my gear i use in the field.

Current 0311 here- A lot of dudes use the Alice frame and straps with the new FILBE packs. Personally I use an Alice frame with Tac Tailor straps. I feel that it sits better with body armor vs the new plastic frames. There really isn't any modding to do to the pack IOT use the Alice frame. I just throw in some zip ties to tighten things up here and there and it works great for me.

That's the most comprehensive video I've ever seen on the ALICE rucksack. Really appreciated that you included the versatility of the ALICE frame to hump ammo, water, rations, and fuel. There are some impressive rucksacks issued and/or on the market, but I'm not convinced they are as strong, durable, or as versatile as the ALICE medium and large rucksack with frame. Plus, there are so many ways to upgrade and improve this battle proven system! Personally, I have two "Hellcat M-ALICE" by Tactical Tailor with the improved tube frame...but at its very core, it's still nothing but an ALICE rucksack. Brilliant.

Thanks brother, I've been wanting to do this video for a long time. As stupid as it sounds I was actually waiting for ONE clip of me putting a snow pack cover on a alice pack in the snow. I did the one in the desert so I thought it would be cool to have a clip of putting on each cover in its different environment. Problem is it hasn't snowed here in like 3 years! I decided to give up on my snow hopes and just film. Ha

@@Brent0331 When mother nature decides not to help, there's not much you can do about it. Thanks for doing this vid though, it convinced me to pick one up. It looks a lot more breathable than the current pack, especially with the frame. My problem with my current pack is how hot my back gets when hiking, it looks like the frame makes it so it only contacts your back at the padding. Is that the case? If so, that's exactly what I'm looking for. How much of a difference in balance and weight is there between medium and large?
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 5 жыл бұрын
@@CtrlAltRetreat There's definitely a "pocket" in between the pad and the top of the pack on your back. I think this is ideal for accommodating gear like a camelbak. The large ALICE is quiet a bit bigger, however its not really that much "heavier" per say. These packs are made out of a tough nylon material that is very light unlike the modern day cordura packs today. These are combat packs though, if weight is the biggest selling point for you you can get a ridiculously light civilian pack that is guaranteed to not hurt a squire if you drop it on it. Those type of packs wont last the rigors of humping and bushwhacking through heavily wooded though.
@CtrlAltRetreat
@CtrlAltRetreat 5 жыл бұрын
@@Brent0331 Thanks for the response Brent. Everything you've said really reinforces that i should give it a try. I've seen some of those ultralight packs and they make me worry about holes in my pocket book as much as in the pack material if it snags on nearby branches. The pack board is a big deal for me. I always find floppy packs feel much heavier than they are. A pack that i can tighten down onto a frame so and can carry a camel bak sounds fantastic. I think it's worth a shot and a pack frame and shelf is something that would make carrying a Jerry can a few miles a bit less unpleasant. Lord knows i wouldn't want to do that again. Better to have and not need though.

@@CtrlAltRetreat Hey Bud. I have an UL pack called Jam II by Golite. It had cost me around $100 at the time. Its a great framless pack. Has held enough food and h2o plus all of my gear including a bear canister for up to 9 days on the JMT. I usually carry for a 3-5 day trip under 25 lbs. I recently put together an ALICE pack and its a totally a different bird. Much tougher and built with combat in mind. More flexible for all sorts of needs. Plus if you need to use the Jam , at 22 oz you can put it in the Alice pack for urban dress. Best of luck!!

Old Eagle Scout here. I have used a lot of backpacks. ALICE packs, civilian internal frame mountaineering packs, external frame backpacks, ultralight backpacks. I first used medium sized ALICE packs in the early eighties. Where I think ALICE packs really shine is when you are going off trail and off road foot travel. Like long distance backpacking off trail using land navigation techniques like compass and large scale topo maps. ALICE packs also really shine when you are humping in extremely rugged terrain where you need to maintain a lower center of gravity to maintain balance...so you can scramble over rocks, logs, etc. Low center of gravity equals safer movement and less chance of ankle sprains, knee injuries. ALICE packs are also just plain bomb proof. If I was going to travel exclusively on trails or roads on the other hand, Id choose a civilian external frame backpack with a big comfortable hio belt where your center of gravity is going to be high.

Current 11B. Right now I've been using a medium alice commo ruck with the longer woodland straps for the field and its awesome. Ive personally found it to be way more comfortable and versatile than the OCP medium ruck. The waist belt doesn't get used because its pretty much pointless. A lot of people don't realize the outer pockets have pass throughs behind them.

I went with the medium ALICE and have NEVER regretted buying it. I use it for day hikes and overnighters. I have used it when I travel. You should see some of the looks I get when I walk in a hotel with my ALICE pack on my back and loaded up and compressed down. You forgot to show the modification people make where they sew a strap around the very top of the ALICE frame to make a drag handle or top handle. I am glad you like them so well. You did a terrific job with all of them! * Your execution and dedication to them is impeccable. * Thank you for your effort!

Picked up an Alice pack at my local thrift shop for $20 dated 1991 in M81 and it's in fairly decent condition. The straps on mine were custom made with pads from 1945. I ended up removing these and grabbing some NOS straps from the surplus shop, makes a world of difference for me. Since buying this I've been adding what I daily use. Added a first aid kit pouch with insert and recently picked up some 550 cord to make a top handle and some buckles to open the lid of the pack more efficiently. Planning to add male buckles to the top and bottom of the pack so I can carry my IIFS Pack to carry extra equipment and such. Eventually I'm looking to get the frame but for my basic needs, it's not a huge necessity. I appreciate the information you shared about this pack and the ideas you have given me to improve upon my own pack.

This has got to be one of the best if not the best video I have seen on the ALICE systems. I personally love my medium & large ALICE packs which I have modified the shoulder & kidney pads on both. I have Maxpedition, Red Rock, Snug Pack, Out Door Research, LA Police Gear & then some packs. When we go on extensive outings the pack I ALWAYS choose is one of my ALICE packs. Take care & thanks for sharing the video/info with us. - Marco

Hey Partner, you did an excellent job on this video! I normally don't care for videos this long but this one is info, not somebody spouting garbage. I do mix the older and newer material. I love the molle sustainment pouches and usually add at least one. Perfect size to pack about 4 mres in. One point I would like to add, I like to use heavy duty zip ties in place of Alice clips. I've had Alice clips come loose on me and if the gear is something you always carry the same way, there's no need for the quick detach clip. You also save a little weight, not a lot but the best way to save 5 pounds is find a couple dozen places to loose a few ounces. Great video! Take Care and be safe, John

I used an ALICE frame for hauling my radio gear. It's a multi purpose setup for anything including hunting trips. Thanks Brent for this amazing and valuable upload. This is the system I'm most familiar with. I use that entrenching tool and pouch as well to this day. Sometimes I can't find clips for a good price though. In my opinion, this is probably one of your best videos.

This is a brilliant video. Thank you. I have a number of these packs in medium and large and they are just the best. Thanks for the tip about Zip tying on everything for security and also for the water bottle pack strap installation - very good. I've never been in the armed services but I have travelled much with a medium ALICE and for me it's a real piece of kit. It's reliable and strong. I believe that the ALICE pack is the best ever created. So versatile.

ALICE pack tends to hang way back and load weight shifts low. Not conducive to high tight weight center of gravity. You get way more tired and tired quicker with these - especially the ALICE large, than you do with good civilian packs. But they ARE versatile.

I believe Natick Labs was already working on the LC-1 prototypes as early as 1969-70, and they envisioned having a Small, Medium and Large LC-1 pack, but they finally decided to get rid of the Small and went with the Medium and Large. One question I had for a long time, and nobody could ever really give me a solid answer on was "Who got the Mediums and who got the Larges?" A guy I know who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and entered the Army in 1972 told me that the Mediums were intended for "Heavy" Infantry, i.e. Mechanized Infantry, and the Large Alice packs were meant for "Light" Infantry, such as Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces, etc...to date this is the best answer for this question i have gotten, no one else could ever seemingly explain it. Thanks for this great review, i love my ALICE packs man, luckily living near Ft. Bragg, NC there are some really good places to take them to get mods done.

Great video. My three tour Vietnam Vet Plt. Sgt. taught us use 55O cord instead of the belt on the kidney pad - A weave / knot pattern- Much more cushion on your lower back. We were not allowed to use kidney belts. You could not drop your pack quick enough. I was an RTO and was screwed on that ability anyway. My stuff was all LC - 1 apparently. I go on hunts in my native Georgia that last five days usually by myself. I still carry my ALICE pack (lg)

Still have my ALICE pack from 1980. Used them for every travel need insread of luggage. Just toss it into the car or bus, tough, lightweight, and voluminous. Used it for 20 years to store my change out clothes to go from my office to accompany the narc raids. Packed a pair of jeans and BDU pants and BDU shirt, some dark t shirts, pair of surplus army boots, spare socks.

issued a medium ALICE during my survival course with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Gotta say, they really are used everywhere and by everyone, even kids in my case! Mine was probably on it's tenth owner but that didn't matter, I was able to jerry rig the frame to the actual pack with a excessive amount of cordage, and also luckily everything's modular so I was able to replace my shoulder strap and my waist strap with ease

Really good video brother. I love the Alice pack! Also the frame is amazing for anything. I have an old canvas packsack I mounted to the top. And it leaves me room for a bedroll and basically anything you want to put on the bottom. Basically if I'm going out for one night I don't need a lot of stuff. But frame pack always and the Alice is my favorite. Anyway loved your video man. Very informative and hopefully sheds some light on a sometimes forgotten, great pack.

Okay, I've had the Large pack for many years now, bought it off a friend who got himself a "real" rucksack. I only go on 2-3 day trips but still manage to pack insane amounts of seemingly useless gear and something always felt a bit off. Today I found out two things: 1 - I never had an idea that the top flap was openable and 2 - the carrying straps were on the wrong way. I'm a chubby staff sergeant and the straps always were hell bent trying to cut my sides in half. Now I kind of want to find out if switching the straps give a better performance lugging shit across Finnish forests. Also need to stitch the center pouch back together as it gave up some time ago. But thank you Brent for this very informational video, much appreciated.
