Erik ten Hag made a slight change to his line up since the disaster against Brighton. But the defensive problems persist and Thomas Frank's men were able to pressure with ease and come away with a 4-0 win.
How is this possible? What needs to be changed?
Jon Mackenzie explains.

As an Arsenal fan, the problems Ten Hag is facing remind me a lot of what Arteta had to do in the first year managing Arsenal. He tried to play pretty, possession football at the very start, but after a while he realized he just didn't have the personnel for it. Mustafi, Sokratis and co. simply can't pass out of the back like that. So he switched to a 3-4-3 formation, which was a lot less reliant on smart passing, and more focused on very industrious wingbacks patrolling the entire flank and offering a ton of support in defense. At the time, I think a lot of fans were disappointed by how blunt our attack was, but I think that in hindsight it was a really good idea. We stopped conceding tons of goals, and then we have sought to build back our attacking prowess over time. I wonder if Man U may end up trying something similar. I don't know if their fanbase/ownership has the patience for our kind of slow rebuild.

What amazes me is that none of the midfielders dropped back to help eriksen when he was being constantly pressed. Like they didn't drop back to offer themseleves as a passing option from the CBs or relief some marking pressure from eriksen, they jus literally watched eriksen get hounded and chased down

Frank de Boer won 4 titles in a row with Ajax, he was sacked after 10 weeks at Palace. Palace lost their first four league matches of the season without scoring a single goal - the first team in 93 years to have begun a top-flight season in such a fashion. Whilst at the club, De Boer attempted to implement a possession-based style of play; after his sacking, he criticised the club's players for their resistance to his approach, arguing that the club had signed only two players to fit his philosophy. Palace winger Wilfried Zaha commented on De Boer's brief time at the club, stating "There wasn't really the right mixture of players for the way we wanted to play." Does this sound ominously familiar?

If Maguire has shown anything in the past 2 years at United it's that he is not good enough to be a starting centre-back in this team, let alone wear the captain's armband. Whichever defender is next to him (in this case Martinez) has to constanly cover for him which means they cannot focus on their own game. Having one useless centre-back results in two useless centre-backs no matter how good one of them is.

Every past United managers noticed this massive weakness, gave up fixing it, swept it under the bed and stick to their strength which is counter attack. The problem is that kind of gameplay can't win them the league anymore and has created another mess too. I hope United & ETH will really spend time & effort fixing this. Since the spotlight & pressure is higher as United's manager, he has to be an absolute genius & hoping that the luck is on his side too otherwise he'll just be another scapegoat. Right now the favour is not on his side yet. De gea is fans' favourite, club has spent so much on Maguire, Fred is the most energetic midfield, mcTominay is homegrown player, Rashford used to net 20goals/season twice & god knows the list just goes on for United to remain the same 🤦‍♂

Same attitude he brought to Fenerbache as well. Really surprised another team picked him up after that. His lack of interest is so so clear. If United are having problems with Brighton and Brentford's pressing, I cannot WAIT to see how they deal with Liverpool's pressing. I coach at the high school level, and interestingly my coaching philosophy is fairly similar to Ten Hag's, where I like to have a more creative 6 to make short build up easier, and I try to play 4-3-3 throughout. However, I've made sure to teach my girls ways to adapt when plan A, getting the ball to that creative 6, isn't working. Granted, I know I'm playing against a bunch of 4-4-2s and not having to worry much about tactics at that level, but it still seems odd that when plan A didn't work, and they were 2-0 down, that there didn't seem to be a plan B.

The biggest problem Erik has is that he doesn't have the necessary players who can properly implement his footballing philosophy. The current players aside from Erikson and Martinez are just not capable of playing that type of football. Most of the United players are leftovers from Mourinho and Ole managerial days (counterattacking and defensive types of football). If Erik wants to get the type of possession based play he wants in United, the higher ups at the club must sell most of the current players and get those who can implement Erik's football philosophy. There is no way someone like Maguire, Rashford, McTominay, Fred, etc. can play this type of football simply because they are not capable. Unfortunately the club wasted two months chasing a player who doesn't want to play for them and prefers to play for a club that qualifies for CL football. They should have had a plan B incase plan A (trying to get De Jong) doesn't work. Instead they are panic buying players like Rabiot.

Ten Hag has got a huge job on his hands. And it doesn’t help that he hasn’t received adequate backing. Nor does it seem like the players will adopt his philosophy and his tactics. I will continue to back Ten Hag, but the players are pathetic. I can’t see them willing to adapt. When ETH was confirmed to be the next man utd coach/manager, many observers already said the existing squad didn't have the players that can play his system. This was why Rangnick said they need to sell 10 players and buy 10 players. This is also why ETH preferred to buy Dutch or Dutch affiliated players because he knows they are familiar or have foundation with the system he prefers. This also highlights how inept the man utd players are at the top flight and lucky to finish 6th last season... they could be flirting with relegation.

Possession based teams are not as spread out as Man United. They're a lot closer to each other so players can offer themselves as passing options. Man United play like playground school children, standing far away expecting the pass to come to them, instead of coming to receive the pass. The lack of fitness, effort and desire to run further compounds this. Shambolic.

really good analysis, but perhaps a few more key observations: 1. first half utd were facing the sun, and maybe that contributed to some of the blunders with the goalkeeper and while playing out from the back. A good manager should have realized this and perhaps taken a more conservative approach with the lot of players he has 2. while the highlight reels don't demonstrate it, maguire actually contributed to a lot of the goals conceded - his slow passing and indecisiveness has let to missed passes and corners that ultimately let to some of the situations that made things quite easy for Brentford to setup the goal scoring situations 3. however to be fair maguire did highlight one problem to his team in that first half - he could be seen waving at the full backs getting them to tread back a bit because they were too far up and effectively blocked (most of the time) by the man-pressing Brentford was doing. In that he's not wrong, just that while worrying about the positioning of his teammates sometimes he lost situational awareness of his own surroundings 4. a weak offense is the foundation of a shambolic defense - both sancho and rashford had no ability on the ball and zero threat (just look over to the other side of the pitch and you see much better ball usage). Opposing defenders love you because you have no trickery no bravery no creativity. This helps Brentford with their high press game plan cos there's no really too much to worry about at the back

Honestly, I think the BIGGEST problem United has, that caused all this in the long term, is that they allow the coaches to decide who's getting signed. Now you have a mix of Mourinho, Ole and Ten Haag with no cohesion. A Football Director and a scout hierarchy would fix these problems in the long term, but well, they are already spending money on Ten Haag's players. When the next manager comes, probably this season, he will have players that don't fit the system either.

@@ziwer1 no dude, the manager should be one piece of the puzzle, not the puzzlemaker. The manager had the final say in signings in the 1990's and 2000's. Nowadays, the best clubs have a Sporting Director and a scouting department so the signings can be made thinking always long term. The manager has a saying in the process, of course, but not the final word. Otherwise, what happens is the situation at United: a lot of players that do not fit what they wanna do. If they had a long term plan, they wouldn't need to sign a whole team everytime they hire a coach.

There is a lot of criticism of Martinez for being too short to defend against set pieces, but he's a good passer and he can help bolster the build up by coming into midfield. Can that skill of his be accommodated when in possession? 3. Lastly, other than de Jong, who else should this wretchedly run club sign for the 6 position? If only United could re-sign Michael Carrick! Was considered a boring player when SAF signed him all those years ago, but those are exactly the skills that this team misses most deeply.

Yeah it's not glamorous but it gives some stability at the least. Maybe then they would have some base to build attacks off. In the end Manchester United are in a terrible place and it needs overhauls all over the club, will they? Doubt it. I can see man United dying in the near future. Use a midfielder as a wander and let your front 2 stay high. Maybe it might be the counter, leave bodies around in defense and rely on the counter to punish teams. Football has always been a game based on the principles of water but it is also very circular. The defensive counter will become the norm and then it will change. Ten Haag needs to understand that you can't play possession and high pressing football with De Gea, Maguire, McFred, Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo, all in the starting 11. Is impossible. None of these players fit the system. Ronaldo is the only one you should be making an exception to.

They like his philosophy that's why they employed him. Every coach have their style of play. To be a football you have to be able to adapt to a tactical change in a team. He can't just come and start playing counters like Jose like that's what he does
@de.n30
@de.n30 Жыл бұрын
I never said he needed to change completely, but he should adapt his system a bit to fit the players. For example, telling De Gea it's okay to go long when pressed. Or play Maguire not so advanced on the pitch, cuz he simply has no speed to track back. Otherwise, expect more goals against and individual mistakes.

Why does Maguire still start? I think he is a massive roadblock for Ten Hag if he wants this team to progress. Constant errors, rumours of a bad attitude and he's meant to be the captain of the squad? Very strange

The biggest issue with this United team is confidence and player morale. No amount of tactics is going to change that. These players are so used to hearing how terrible they are that they've internalised it and now at the first sign of anything not going their way they crumble. Our generation of fans are obsessed with signings, but no amount of transfers is going to fix this team, it's why whenever a new signing comes into this team they eventually end up becoming worse. What ETH has to do first and foremost is to create a positive culture within the dressing room, so the players believe in themselves more and start to play with more confidence. On paper this team is only good enough for 6th, 5th if they get very very lucky. Honestly that at the moment is irrelevant, they first have to get themselves believing that they're decent players which they are. You can't just buy 25 new players every 3 years, that's insane. The board and the administration are absolutely shocking but sadly they're here to stay. ETH has to find a way to survive in this madness.

it is amazing how poor these players have been under what is now 3 different managers in the space of a year you would think they might want to try and impress a new manager to keep their place, the opposite seems to be true they seem to be actively wanting themselves to be benched. The new coach must be wondering what he has signed up for with this group of players especially considering that the club has spent the most part of 550 million quid on transfers to assemble a significant portion of this squad you would expect some quality. In terms of transfers they need two decent defensive or central midfield players, they need a actually decent fullback, they need a striker who is prolific and is under 30, they need to offload probably another 6 players, they need to sign a player who is capable of acting as a leader.

The ending part of this reminds me of England and Southgate. Pretty much every fan of England think it's Southgate not getting the best out of a talented bunch with his 'negative' tactics playing out the back etc. When in reality the players are still not good enough to be true world beaters. Southgate knows this and this is why he has them play the football they do.

The long term option is to keep this playstyle and really push the team to learn to play is, but they’ll suffer short term, but if they scrap it they might have more success short term but long term it’ll leave them back where they’ve been for the last couple years

Watching the game in first hand and then watching clips back I just can’t find an explanation as to how and why professional footballers no matter what your position can’t get basics right, having played to a reasonable standard I see stuff which was taught in the academies by age 10 watch back this game and see stuff so blatant. To be a professional and have so many one dimensional kind of players at one club is horrific, ETH has been given a tool box which upon arrival and after searching through he’s slowly finding its empty. Can’t help but feel sorry for anyone part of the coaching staff and some of the players to be honest.

The question asked at the end of does Ten Hag continue with insisting on playing out from the back or realise he doesn't have the players for it and be more pragmatic (direct) is an interesting one. It seems pretty obvious that the second option is the correct one at this point in time. But I'm sure Ten Hag will go with the first option. There's never really been a successful Dutch manager in the Premiership. Van Gaal probably the most successful and he wasn't exactly a resounding triumph. They always seem very stubborn about this playing out from the back. Ten Hag strikes me as just as stubborn and I think he'll refuse to adapt. Continue getting poor results and ultimately get sacked.
