I'm 67, still lifting, and it seems that you just reviewed my weight training history. I couldn't wait until Jones published his next article in Iron Man. As a person always trying to gain weight (about 6'1'', 195 now), I, on several occasions when I was younger, worked up to 300 lbs - 20 rep squats. I built a step-like squat rack out of 2X4s, but always worried I'd pass out and fall backwards out of the rack. Normally when I made those lifts, I'd not squat for long periods - I think they were just too mentally daunting., and my bodyweight didn't change all that much. Good overall review.

So grateful for this info! I took a training from MindValley and H.I.T was a part of their program - 12 reps to failure. I loved it because I was in and out of the gym in 30 min. (I don’t warm up) it’s definitely economical! Thank you for making this long form video!
@Bodyknowledge772 жыл бұрын
Jeepers Bret this got nostalgic for me! Thanks! I've been training consistently since 93' and was obsessed back in the day the Cyberpump site. I did various permutations of H.I.T training for many years (won bodybuilding shows/placed well doing it). Mentzer Heavy Duty style, Superslow, Darden etc. I enjoy training more now since roughly 90 odd% of the time I don't go to total failure and do more(but reasonable) volume.

Thanks for the great discussion. When I was doing lots of Oly lifting I never ever went failure. Strength training I would occasionally get their but not on purpose. However for hypertrophy specifically with bench (on a Smith machine) and leg extensions I have been purposely getting to failure. Now I am also focusing on slow eccentric and concentric movements (3s-4s with a 1s pause at top and bottom of movement) sp the weight moved is much less. And I only do this for my last set. I also need more recovery time b/w workouts. That said I do notice more hypertrophy gains do this.

I've been lifting for 37 years. My best gains strength and size were training to failure. For squats that often meant going until.i had to set the weight in the rack in the bottom. Problem is it's hard to break yourself of that, and I've been injured alot. It became a psychological need for me. I recently started using a BFR unit, an actual medical grade one with a manual pump. I can satisfy that need to go to failure, or near failure with a way lighter load, so light I'm dumbfounded that such a light weight could be so hard and cause so much DOMS, with little to no risk of injury and still have hypertrophy. Great content on all your videos and I have started training glutes more directly since I tore my hamstring last fall.

Extremely comprehensive, and I loved it. Thank you very much Bret, you are one of my favorite online fitness teachers. There are a lot of peoples videos on this topic that make me feel like they went into the video filming process with biased opinion. Then they will cherry pick studies, calling science down like a new religion, and not mention the multiple other studies to say the opposite. Also, there are many of people who go the opposite route and fuel their information strictly anecdotally without much experience. You come from both angles and show both sides. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I almost always fail to keep good form or get a perfect muscle contraction before I fail in the traditional sense of not being able to complete the rep. Is it better to stop before your from degrades, or sacrifice a bit of form to push to absolute failure?
@bretcontreras12 жыл бұрын
It depends. For example with curls, I like 1-2 cheat reps at the end with strict negatives. But with squats and hip thrusts I don't like people having a sloppy last rep or two

I have a question !! Everyone always says that deadlifts are great to grow the glutes but when I do them I don’t feel any burn on my glutes just a lil bit in my lower back I checked correct form videos but I can’t find what’s wrong when I do it. Is it essential to do deadlifts or good mornings? Or is it okay if I just do sets of bulgarian split squats, hip thrusts and leg raises?

I got lost with the history. What exactly is training to failure. You do the first set until you cant perform the exercise woth proper form anymore? and then 2 other sets normally?
@EnjoySynthSounds Жыл бұрын
To failure each set. Instead you could do drop sets- 15 on your biggest weight, then continue with a much lower weight. Its safer that way, and you can get the pump.
