In Britain’s vote to leave the EU, a large majority of Scots voted to remain. Now Alyn Smith is working hard to convince fellow European Parliament members that Scotland is entitled to an exit from Brexit. dw.com/p/1JMFm

If Scots want independence from the UK, good luck to them. I as an Englishman would welcome devolution on all sides, mainly because I think it would actually lead to better relations between the constituent nations were the smaller countries to extricate themselves from a historical oppressor, albeit one which is now in practical terms a very important economic partner (but could remain so post-devolution). Each of the countries could then make decisions in their own interests without the possibility of outside voters or MPs influencing their future.

Yes we would love the Scotts in the EU, also N Ireland. Don’t know why, but we love them. Maybe the accent or their Nordic roots. But they would have to leave the UK, and join euro zone. That’s a big step, and it would take at least 2 years to get back into the EU.
@ronrichardson31033 жыл бұрын
They wouldnt get in . They exist under a deficit in the uk ,so how are they going to survive and pay what the EU would want to charge. Which would be considerable . They cant say ' but we have Scotish oil " they missed that boat by 50 years . .they did have in the early 70s its nearly gone now . . and do you notice the electric cars appearing on the roads , that means even if there was oil ,very soon it will be virtualy worthless . But on the brightside . It would save the UK a lot of money if they did.

Well scale is important, but London if it wanted could vote to secede from England and operate as a city-state like Singapore or Hong Kong for example. & join the E.U. on that basis. If it did so South-West Borough of South Hams whatever that is could vote to affiliate to London as an exclave of London. Not a likely scenario in either case but theoretically, legally possible.
@jimmypinch8 жыл бұрын
it would never happen, it's just an fanciful idea, the issue of the EU is a totally separate issue to London being divided from the rest of the UK. My guess is that if Scotland has another referendum on independence it would turn out the same way as the first referendum. Just because people voted one way on one issue does not guarantee a result in a separate issue especially as the majority on the EU vote was not great enough to predict the overall outcome on an independence vote. thanks for replying. .

You may be unaware that there are a great many prominent Remain voices in the UK in the media. Furthermore, the two candidates for the next Prime Minister have been selected by Conservative MP's, the majority of which voted to Remain. Which is why the next PM is likely to be Theresa May, a Remain supporter. Where is the voice of the 48%? It is everywhere my friend. On the other hand the only prominent Scottish supporter of Leave that I can think of is George Galloway and I think he will have voted in England I cannot hear anyone from the Scottish 38% at all - no MP, MEP, no-one.

He keeps saying"my country", but he doesn't really have a country. He is part of Great Britain. They had an opportunity to be their own boss, but said no. How do you have a "country", if you don't have borders. I think that is becoming painfully clear. You don't have my "country", what you have is the EU. It can't be both ways, you have to pick one side of the fence, or the other. It sounds good in a classroom, but I think it is going to become a real nightmare in about 10 years. Scotland had a vote for independence, yes? But they said they wanted to remain in Great Britain. This is the problem with not having autonomy for your country. If they had voted to stand on their own two feet, there would be no problem. England has chosen the path of independence, freedom, and autonomy. It will be tough at first, but making your own way in the world builds character, and pride in one's own country.
@G4KDXlive8 жыл бұрын
No, that's not factually correct. Great Britain ( technically the United Kingdom ) is comprised of four countries: Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. People, like Smith, who are born in Scotland are Scottish. The United Kingdom isn't a country: It's a state comprised of four countries.
@patricktomlinson54268 жыл бұрын
G4KDXlive That is precisely what I said, that he is Scottish, and Scotland had a vote to become independent of GB, but whether you are part of GB, or an independent country, you must have borders to be a sovereign entity. Open borders do not work in the real world., if you want to remain sovereign.
@984francis8 жыл бұрын
And it soon will not be comprised of four countries.
@hiddensecreturl5 жыл бұрын
@@G4KDXlive Great Britain is not "technically the United Kingdom". Great Britain is an island separated from the European mainland by the English Channel and North Sea. It comprises the nations of England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is made up of Scotland, England and Wales. Northern Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom in this sense. It was not part of the 1707 Act of Union which saw England (which included Wales, despite them at this point having no legislative power) and Scotland fall under a single parliament and monarchy, thus becoming the United Kingdom. This is why the official title of the nation is the United Kingdom of Great Britain (those situated in the island) and Northern Ireland (which is neither part of the United Kingdom nor Great Britain, do you follow?). It's a long title so we use UK or United Kingdom for short, even though it exempts Northern Ireland. Also, the United Kingdom (shortened use) absolutely is a country. It is a sovereign country comprised of four constituent countries. Yes, a country made up of other countries, it is possible and it exists.

Yes, the 2014 result was won on the promise of all those powers WM promised, including protecting our EU membership. Then WM backed out of all the promises which got WM that result, so if WM can't respect the result why should we. The No vote was not an endorsement of the UK, it was a stay of execution, No was conditional on the Vow. Like any contract, if you renege on the deal it cancels the result. There is no such thing in law which states “ Once in a generation” Lying is not a good way to get a result or you have a problem with democracy. Can you show us where this comment is mentioned in either # Scottish Independence Referendum Act 2013. # Edinburgh Agreement or any official document. The Smith Commission after the 2014 referendum did signed by ALL parties stated in writing, that nothing would prevent Scotland from becoming independent if it so chose Democracy is not a one place and one time.
