one of the best things about this interview is that brian just let roger talk. he didn't just unneccessarily interrupt. long stretches of roger just talking. this is how it should be done.

I am 63, a biologist, and decided to learn modern physics and related math, and picked up The Road to Reality some 8 months ago, studying most of the subjects of math and physics mentioned in the book all along, and finished reading it now. I have learned a lot and feel great. But still when Brain says "general relativity can be derived from string theory", there is no way I can independently verify it, but I just have to believe that's the case. I am very thirsty of the real theoretical and mathematical details behind the physics talks. I have listened and watched physics talks a lot, and learned almost all of the physics stories by heart. What I really need is the theoretical/mathematical nitty gritty of those tales, the real equations and machineries that makes the physics work.

I think Mr. Greene did a fantastic job with this interview. His charm clearly made Sir Penrose feel quite welcome and properly respected. We won't have Sir Penrose around for all that much longer, I fear. And once he's gone, the access to first-hand testimony will be cut off. I believe that in hundreds of years from now, the people who are then living will see Sir Penrose as a giant of his time. And any and all biographical information -- especially straight from the horses mouth, so to speak -- will be greatly valued. Great job, Mr. Greene!

He's so modest that he doesn't make it totally clear that he and his father actually invented the Never-ending Up/Down staircase that MC Escher made famous in his drawings! Just after WW2, they happened to see an exhibition of Escher's works in Amsterdam and were impressed and excited, so on their way back to England on the train, they just came up with it. They published it in a psychology journal and sent a copy to Escher. Everyone (including me) thought it had been Escher's idea -- or was some ancient "paradox" -- but no ... Sir Rog & dad drew it first in the late 1940s, when Sir Roger was on vacation from university. Pretty bloody amazing, but an early sign of his absolute visual genius -- as well as mathematical genius!

*FOR NATURE ABHORS BLACK HOLES* Black hole cannot exist for if you try to force fermions together, eventually the principle of tunneling will take effect which would not allow the particles of matter to concentrate, the particles will escape the confinement with infinite energy if necessary, it is the law of nature and it will not be violated. This is just one aspect of quantum mechanics that defies general relativity, which astrophysicists are trying to hide to protect their precious cottage industry of black holes cosmology.

Do you actually believe that matter can be concentrated to a infinite point with zero volume and infinite density and temperature which has been dubbed a singularity? Yes these interviews are entertaining and informative but from a historical perspective they are priceless. Reading about theories is great. Hearing from the giants in the field directly about how they came to the theory is pure gold. Well done professor

Dr. Penrose is such a clear, clever thinker packaged in a very unpretentious personality. Now with the recognition that the Nobel Prize affords, I suspect he will be even more humble. No wonder he is a real hero in Physics for me. Dr Greene's questions are quite deep yet respectful; this interview is one of the very few that does not have the interviewer interview the interviewer. Well done , Dr. Greene.

It would be wonderful, if by chance, Sir Penrose's talk is subtitled. His mind still works in full throttle and sometimes it is hard to catch his emphasis as he goes through quick on these subjects. As a non-native English speaker I stumble there. This is a great opportunity to witness the focal points in modern science. Thank you heartily.

Great interview. And it was nice hearing again about John Wheeler's work at Princeton on General Relativity. My brother was one of Wheeler's PhD students at Princeton and did some of the early work on black hole collisions... calculating the gravity waves emitted in the simplest case: two identical non-spinning black holes colliding directly into each other.

It’s so refreshing having such a prominent mind that isn't afraid to step on the toes of theoretical physicists who have wasted careers on String Theory. Penrose, despite his advanced age, isn’t stuck in dead end 90’s theories.
