I usually like Brian Sewell, but on this occasion he is completely unreasonable. The top half of the tomb is innovative for its time and quite prescient of the baroque era. The sculpted female figures on the lower section are of better quality than Michelangelo's own female figures carved for a Medici tomb which Sewell then over praises later on in the episode.

if the tomb was such a dissapointment why not film de frescos in the back of the church. they are much more fun anyway

The tomb of Michelangelo is always a disappointement for the tourists, MA had desired a totally different thing for his own tomb in Rome and instead, here we have these three ugly statues with the bust and the tomb projected by Vasari as the politic statement of the power of the Medici family... Dont go to see his tomb, go and see some of the beautiful works that MA had left in Florence, like the New Sacristy in the Medici's Chapels, or the library, or the sculptures in Bargello museum or the Pietà in Museum of Duomo or David and Slaves in Accademia.

Ah, Mr. Sewell, only a fatuous and irrelevant nobody could act both weary and irritated while standing before the tomb of the greatest sculptor. How about a comment on the geometry of the tomb or the statues representing the three arts that Michelangelo conquered? Could there be some sort of acknowledgment that Michelangelo produced stupendous works of art? No, instead we get you huffing and wheezing that nothing is up to your impeccable standards so it's all about how offended YOU are.

he said he was the greatest of all artists, he didnt think the tomb was good enough for him - sewell was an educated man and you should address the criticisms he made, specifically of the statues - so your points about the artist's importance and the statues are already dealt with by sewell, and I dont think geometry should ever be enough to make great art

You've obviously not spent too much time in Britain. The middle and upper classes do get emotional but don't make it obvious . And the working class get emotional and are a lot more obvious - especially when drunk . The murderer Henry VIII saved us from the control of Rome , that's how we got to build a successful empire .

The Tudors were actually quite expressive and nutty. I think if there really is some sort of emotional stiffness (and I don't think there really is), this should more likely be attributed to the Victorian era.
