In starcraft 2 there are the leagues bronze silver gold platinum diamond Master grandmaster. Each, except GM are divided into 3 sub leagues, where bronze 3 is the lowest rank. However, the skill gap between the worst players and bronze 2 is ENORMOUS. There is a massive pit at the bottom that should be below bronze 3, and players call people at that level "wooden league"

Thanks Brian, this was actually something I needed to hear. Since the day I started playing around 18 months ago I've been hyper-focused on playing "good" or "correctly" and while I feel like I have followed through on that intention and reaped the benefits, it also sort of fostered a sense of entitlement: "Why am I losing to this moron", etc. As I struggle to get to master (or even consistently hold ultra diamond) I find myself frequently discouraged by specific results. This video laid two things bare for me: 1. Maybe those wild players ARE better in some aspects and I need to accept that and improve accordingly 2. Even if my consistency vs these players is wanting, I'm validated that I'm on the right path to getting that consistency. So it was both a wake-up call and a word of encouragement. I really needed both right now.
@heisenburg86084 жыл бұрын
Think about what he said too, about the key to beating random or "morons" is to know your character well enough to be able to react or punish anything in any given situation. You don't have to play the mind game much with them, let them kill themselves.

It takes a lot of drilling fundamentals and labbing matchups to reliably beat any player who is ‘worse’ than you. Compare that to the amount of time it takes to learn some simple combos and flowcharts that will work against 99% of online players and it’s obvious why diamond is full of crazy brawlers.
@STGcritical3 жыл бұрын
I’m stuck in silver too and I’ll say it’s most likely do to poor decision making or lack of matchup knowledge. I’d say when it comes to fundamentals defense and combos in pretty good but since I lack matchup knowledge or I just make some bad decisions during the match. However I also rarely play ranked if I played more I’d probably lose and go back to bronze but I think soon I’d get good enough to go past silver. Online players don’t expect a Cammy main to know what the word defense means.

This Ken did not look THAT bad to me. He did not go 100% on offense, he tried to bait a wake up DP in the corner once, and tried to read a throw with a backdash when he was put into the corner. He does a lot of risky stuff, but people do that because it usually works; heck, even here, the set seemed close - and it does not always mean that they can't adapt when their usual tactic fails. I've met "nutty" Ken players in my rank (super platinum) who clearly notice when I'm baiting their unsafe moves and dial them back, and even try to play a DEFENSIVE game and counter-poke me as an alternative strategy.

Thank you for making this video. It's perfect. There are so many people in pretty much every fighting game community that complain about getting beat by "players who just do stupid things and aren't even good." Some people want to play footsies and RPS, some people want to play Russian Roulette. It's a legitimate strategy, just not a great or consistent one.

Holy fuck. “Being a lunatic gets you wins against people who are better than you”. I have the perfect story regarding this, its absolutely true. I was playing killer instinct (new one) and I was specifically labbing out ways to be as psychotic as possible with spinal (the resource rushdown character of the game), doing weird stuff like juggle enders into taunts and weird combos with manuals and stuff like that. I ended up getting matched with a killer rank player shortly after (max rank, I was silver which is about mid to low rank) and ended up absolutely destroying him the first round with everything I had labbed out, just going batshit crazy on him. He then proceeded to absolutely destroy me the next 15 rounds in a row, which definitely helped me practice with spinal as he was one of my worst characters at the time. I don’t remember the aftermath, but that is easily the best lunatic moment I’ve ever had in a fighting game. I’ve had some spectacular lunatic moments in shooters and sometimes among us, but never in quite the same way as that one. That will always be my favorite :D

Personally, I've been overwhelmed many times lately by an S1 player in Soul Calibur VI (S1 being the highest rank possible), until I've learned how to side-step against his chains or combo resets that can frame trap and possibly crash counter you (sort of) if you make the mistake to move or attack at the wrong moment. Now I'm winning almost everytime I get to fight him, because I've adapted while he never even tried to. It has been a satisfying lesson, because, he maybe sitting at the highest rank possible, but it's clear that he doesn't want to change his mindless button pressing playstyle at all, so, has Brian said, they can't always get away with it.

So much of success in a well-tuned fighting game revolves around preparation and thinking and strategy. Usually, when someone beats you very badly, they have out-planned, out-thought, or out-strategized you. It’s no wonder, then, that many players frequently don’t quite understand how or why they lost. If you could fully comprehend what made your opponent’s gameplan so effective against you, then... maybe it wouldn’t be so effective against you.

Yourgoodpaljake here! I’m a fan of yours Brian and I don’t disagree with anything you say in the video. I know you’re aware that treating a netplay FT2 as a reflection of someone’s skill ceiling is silly but I hope your chat knows as well - like anyone else it’s easy for me to end up on autopilot in the back half of a long session, and admittedly I’m especially bad about doing it to players with less points (didn’t know this was your PC tag at the time). A lot of your KZbin content has been around helping your audience deal with “nutty” and high-risk players online; how about we hop in a call, play another set, and you drop some live feedback pointing out the holes in my understanding of the game’s mechanics? What weaknesses does a playstyle like mine have and how do I implement more patience? Maybe more importantly, what incentive do I have to do so in an online ranked environment where I can bulldoze half the playerbase by spamming crush counter roundhouse? I think some advice for building a more flexible gameplan could help a lot of players around my level and “Attempting to Coach a Flowchart Ken” could make for a good video.

SFV ranking system is very good. If you win, you go up, if you lose, you go down, it's nice and simple! More important than the name "diamond" or "grandmaster", the "last 100 ranked matches" ratio is a better source of information about a player skill. Just go look at Sako Grandmaster account and see how often he won his last 100 ranked matches.

I agree wholeheartedly. The flow chart is strong in the platinum rank area. You can see by just quick rising after every knockdown. You'll see what that player tends to do if his previous sequence was successful. I noticed this myself with my Rog. If I land a jump in into knowckdown, Im coming with the overhead. If it lands, combo into knockdown. Then im coming with the low, then the overhead into combo. All of these change based on the opponents reactions. And this works 60% of the time in lower ranks (I play a lot of lobbies).

You need execution and reactions, but you're also trying to read the other guy so you can figure out when to risk it all. I suspect a big part of the reason people struggle with the 'ranking' system is that they don't see just how much actual gambling is baked into the game. You can and will lose a game to a player who takes a ton of risks and never get the chance to adapt to his playstyle because it's a first to two format. Being able to recognize when you lost to somebody playing a numbers game and when you lost to someone who stronger fundamentals is important. Figure out what happened and see if you can identify that playstyle more quickly in the future. Street Fighter isn't always about nailing that neutral. Sometimes it's about taking risks. Just remember it's a game and everybody plays their own way.

I'm totally unpredictable, because I miss up inputs, which probably throws a lot of people off.

This is so true. I see a lot of players like that, that just have setups and they repeat that regardless of the conditions.

I’ve been playing fighting games for years being too aggressive. You learn safe ways to do dumb things, or ways to trick your opponent into trying to punish your “unsafe” approach. I don’t think it’s all downsides, but it warps the perception of neutral/footsies at first. Brian dumped a big tip here that I wish I had figured out sooner.

When I first started playing Street Fighter, I had no neutral whatsoever. I played Rashid, did cr. HP xx EX/H WWS all day and ended up making it to diamond early on in the game and even placing fairly high in some tournaments. But I never felt I was strong enough. Since then, I’ve spent more time “rounding out my stats” and now I can usually go even (maybe a bit less) against high level players. Still have a ways to go, but looking back on how I played then to now, I know I can actually go decently far as long as I don’t get into my own head.

What do you mean by not getting into your own head? Is there something you mentally do during or before the game that helps to improve your consistency?

5:41 This is what Tekken has and it's amazing. It's a bit inaccurate and it favours certain stats over others, but it's nice than whatever SFV does lol

I've never fucked with the notion of "X high rank players aren't good" Like I don't understand why in games like SF, League, CS or other games we only act like the top .1% of players at the absolute highest ranks are worth considering good. If you're in the top 25-30% of players in a game that sold millions of copies I think its beyond safe to say that you're a good player. Maybe not great, not top level, but good at the very least.

Re-thinking a match and keep match up in mind+time will rank up player constantly while flow charting with great reaction time/execution will stop ranking up a player sooner or later.

I agree with eveything you said mostly, though I do dissagree when you said its like there not playing the game becasue there not playing at a high level or the way you think the game should be played. I dont agree that if you dont play optimal or meta that its not considered playing the game. Even if the player is ignoring neutral, whiff, and defense.

I would like to add that offensive flowcharting works better online. The more lag the better offense is and inversely the harder defense becomes. The environment really makes this kind of play work and is why its so common.

This reminds me of what I'm going through right now. I got the game a couple of months ago and I'm ultra gold so I'm starting to get matched with diamond players. I was thinking finally I would get to play some solid-ish people but they're more nuts and gimmicky than everything I've ecountered so far :/
@riansillett27714 жыл бұрын
You dont get matched to Diamonds in ranked if you are in gold. You will only be matched to Diamonds when you get Ultra platinum or above. Diamond league is a massive jump from Ultra Gold.
