This is just a personal thank you for giving me the courage and self confidence that I so desperately need before starting every stage of a new project. Your videos are so well put together. Not only is my sewing now elevated to highly professional finished wedding dresses but listening to your voice is so soothing. You are an exeptional sewist, business woman, teacher and therapist. Thank you so so much. 🌷

Great video. Because of knee issues, I am unable to get on the floor to cut tulle layers accurately so I do mark with pins but I place a piece of white felt behind the pins so they don't fall out. I find this helps to get the pins in straight parallel to the floor as well.

I just recently found your page while searching for help while altering my daughter's flower girl dress. Your page is so informative and helpful. Has anyone ever told you that you sound exactly like Elizabeth Banks (actress)? Random...and maybe I missed it... but would you please do a story time and sit down and share with us your journey to get to where you are now? How did you get started sewing? What drew you to the bridal niche? You are so talented and I would love to know how you learned everything you know. You are such an inspiration. My very first memories of learning to sew (hand and machine) were when I was a kid (about 7 or 8 years old) with my grandmother. I'm 36 now and I was able to keep her Husqvarna machine when she passed away. Every time I use it, I think of her and feel so close to her. Watching your videos also gives me that feeling (the joy of creating things with grandma). Thank you for that! Sorry for the random, all over the place comment. :)

Thank you so much for this viseo. Great information. Have you ever done a video on hemming the train portion of a dress.? I always stress and take too much time on trying to make it look right. Especially the outer layers that are 2-3 times wider than the inner layers.

You are awesome!!! I have my few brides come and o do my first fitting. I fit the bodice and discuss what she wants. I next go to the inside. I hem my inner lining on the short side. The next layer is still short.I want my linings away from her feet. Sorry. I use LOTS of straight pins. When I get to the putter layer. I pin it to the floor. Again. Lots of pins. They turn and they walk. I have them come back for another fitting. I trim the outter layer, put I press so I have a hem line.

I usually leave 2 inches until that fitting. I have the bodice taken in by then, so this is is usually my last fitting, other than the final. The number of pins and time is significant, but, I find that I have less issues. Thank you for all your tips. 💋

This was an amazing video, thank you so much. You really broke it down for us. I would like to know as a reference how much allowance do you leave for the hem for different fabrics? This has been one of my most difficult things to keep consistent 😊
@BridalSewing
@BridalSewing 2 жыл бұрын
It is different for every person and it takes time to learn your personal hem allowances. When starting out, I think it's fairly safe to cut most rolled hems 1.5" long. That way, you have 3/4" for the roll & 3/4" of fudge-room.

Thank you so much for all your videos. They are sooooooo helpful and edifying. I'm in the middle of sewing a ball gown wedding dress. And I'm not sure how to hem such a fluctuating gown. There are so many layers that they can become compressed because of the weight of the outside layer of heavily beaded tulle. At initial try on, it's all puffed out and very full but after wearing it for awhile (as on the wedding day) it sinks. So where should I place the hem? At the fullest, the lowest where it will sink or somewhere in between?

If let a bride stand on fitting platform, like the round one in the wedding salon, and the edge of the platform is the guide of where the dress to be hem, will it be work?

In some cases. But, fullness varies.

So, if I understand you correctly…ideally, you have the Bride come several times to pin the different layers as you work from inside to out…hemming, say the lining and cutting the crinoline…then have them return to mark the next layer….hem then have them return.
@BridalSewing
@BridalSewing 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I run them quite a bit. I ask for an average of 4 appointments, or they can schedule a longer appointment during which I pin, turn them out for a quick break while I cut real quick, get them back in it, pin next section, and then send them on, with me cutting one more section, & finishing the edges of two sections for "homework."

Thank you. I’ve been following you for awhile and get lots of good instruction from your videos. I’ve been doing bridal for a while and also have the brides come about 4 times for fittings….I want to become more efficient at hemming….I’m having to turn away brides and other seamstress work because I second guess myself so it takes me longer than it should. I work with a Bridal Salon and had to tell them to stop sending me work as I had 8 gowns at my home…it’s only me. I’m struggling now with a lined horsehair hem…I can’t get the horsehair to lay flat inside the two layers of…wait for it…your favorite…Organza.

Yess! There's a code! If everyone pins and notates the same or similarly there are way less sewing room issues. The worst thing ever is having to call a bride to come back for an extra fitting because previous pinning or notes were vague or incomplete.

O M G!! This was sooooo helpful. I'm not altering a wedding dress but I bought a long evening gown that was off the shoulder on one side that was supposed to show my marvelous curves and it ended up fitting like a tent. I went according to the size chart but when I received it. It was still 2 sized too big!! I have been binge watching your videos to see how I can fix it. I have pics but I don't want to post them for everyone to see. I am self taught but I have taken a few classes and do pretty well. The dress arrived late since it came from another country (I won't say much else about that) so I believe getting it professionally altered for the party this weekend will probably not be possible. I LOVE your videos and don't care what your face looks like. Your voice is very pleasant and I like your business sense. I have no problem paying for my alteration if it can be done before I go out of town otherwise I will take a day and do it myself. Pray for me pls.
