How to Lengthen the Waist of a Gown, Extend the Waist of a Gown, Long Waist #tallgirlprobs #tallglassofwater #customfit
This video will walk you through the steps of lengthening the waist of a gown for a long torsoed bride. If the bodice is shorter than the bride's torso, then the dress slips down too low and does not provide adequate but coverage. There are several ways to remedy this, and this video shows you one. This includes extending the waist and adding an inner, elastic waist belt.

I have been altering wedding gowns for about 20 years and I am so happy to have found your channel. I love watching, and learning different ways to approach the same outcome. There are so many ways to achieve the finished dress, and I am all for learning something new!! Thank you, I know it takes a lot of extra time to make these videos. I appreciate it!

Debe Moffatt thanks!! That's the way I look at it, too!! Welcome to the community. This isn't a place to try to say, "My way is better than yours." It is a place to see/hear how someone else does it. We all have so much to learn and share! :) :)

I tell my clients, sewing is an art, not a science! Especially, if they say, my cousins dress was done a certain way, but their dress is different fabric and style. Thank you for your tips!

Thank you so much for your incredibly well done tutorials. Ive been sewing for a very long time but mostly tailored garments and custom home decor and have been looking for constructing the inner garment of gowns and stumbled across your videos. I appreciate your relaxed style and you’re very easy to listen to. Blessings from NY.

Kate Wooden That’s exactly I feel. I’ve been making gowns for 30 years plus and taught myself and learnt something quicker and easier most days and to know I’m using common sense (yeah again) is good. This channel I absolutely adore. The lady (sorry don’t know her name) makes me laugh at the things she says and does I love her and I do learn some good tips too.

Wow, what a great alteration. Would you not cover the elastic as to not have raw elastic against the skin???
@BridalSewing

No mam. Only if a latex allergy. The store bought ones that include the inner band are not usually covered. Also, any additional fabric would only add bulk.

This is definitely a question from a newbie... haha Is there a certain way to always face the boning? Curve towards bride or away?
@BridalSewing
@BridalSewing 3 жыл бұрын
No, that's a good question. I usually try to straighten it a bit, but tend to turn it toward whichever natural curve the body would have at that place.

Another wonderful video :). I’m behind on watching some so it’s rainy day catch up today. As a general rule would you use the wide elastic as a waist stay vs grosgrain or petersham ribbon? I like the look of it much better. I have just always seen the ribbon. Seems like this would be more comfortable as well I want to add a waist stay in all of the gowns I design so that added support is already there.

Bridal Sewing Techniques Hahahahahaha. There’s several videos of seamstresses studios but everyone is a slight bit diff. And holy cow. Do they allow videos that long?? Your place is bigger than mine and I know I have a ton of stuff drawers bins shelves under tables if there’s a spot there are supplies. Then there’s a storage room in my house for what I don’t have room for. So umm yeah. That’s impossible. Most of the sewing books have a basic necessities in the beginning. I’d say start there then become a pack rat of stuff like many of us are. I have so many sewing machines I don’t use since I got my juki awhile back and antique one I collect them dress forms in a bunch of sizes since I drape my designs. Oh dear. I couldn’t imagine

I’ve seen for 40 years, designed for about 10 of those years, have done custom sewing and became the local alterations lady since moving here in 1989. But one problem has always baffled me and I’m anxious to see if my way aligns with yours when taking in the sides of a bodice, pinching an inch on both sides. When moving in 1” from original seam, the bodice front angle and the straight line of the back are drastically off. I’ve been recutting the angle of the front bodice to taper to the back but often lowers the bodice front about an inch at the side seam. Does that make sense?

Yes, that's how you handle it. ✂️👍

Bridal Sewing Techniques Thank you. I just added wedding gowns to my projects a few years ago, instead of just formals. But pricing is always scary. I’m just finishing a strapless wedding gown where I took the side seams in from the top down to the hips and tapered out. Three layers excluding lace layer. Then brought hem up in front only a couple inches so had to remove the lace appliqué trim from side seam to side seam and reset it at the new length. Plus trim and hem 5 layers, serger rolled hem where I can. Oh, and reapply horsehair braid to tulle later. Do you have a price list? What would these alterations be priced at for you?

I'm being so thick headed - can you please help? What exactly allows the lining to move up the body and bring the fashion fabric with it? Is it from reducing the circumference at the hip? I think I must need another coffee because I'm sure I'm missing it. ;)

Far as I am concerned the only wrong way to do a gown is a way that doesn't work. I like your waistline sta method it is similar to mine unless I am doing it on a lighter gown or a bridesmaids dress when I just make " belt loops" at each bone and use 3/4" non roll elastic to make a complete belt providing it will not show through. That way you can use a swimwear hook and sew in channels that make it adjustable. The girls love adjustable.
