I got married over 12 years ago, and social media was really not as popular then as now. I hired a professional makeup artist because I had no idea how to properly do makeup😂 I even arranged to have a couple trials before my wedding to make sure we figured out what I wanted. After the first trial I told her what I didn't like, and for our second trial she made adjustments. For my wedding she did exactly what I wanted because I told her what I wanted. She did my bridesmaids' makeup too, and they had no problem saying what they wanted. Are people just too afraid to stand up for themselves nowadays? Edit to add: I am NOT a confrontational person at all. But my wedding photos are literally forever, so I was very particular about how I wanted to look. I also did a hair style trial with my hair dresser to make sure she understood my vision.

I am a make up artist and that's how it's supposed to be... I did my friends make up for her wedding and also my friends sisters and both times we had trials where I did just what they told me to do (I came with some exaples in case they didn't know what they want) and the second time they told me what they would like to change and on the wedding day we went with the final make up and every special wishes the brides had... my friend wanted to do her own eyebrows just as she is used to and use her own lipstick she liked and it was totaly fine... so yeah... just communicate with your make up artist! 😅

Nothing wrong with not liking your makeup and redoing it yourself. That being said, her saying "i cant wait to make a tiktok" and not communicating with the makeup artist, makes me believe she just wanted to go viral. If i had 20 minutes til my pictures and had to redo my makeup, the LAST thing id worry about is filming.

I'm a makeup artist and this is so frustrating! JUST TELL US WHAT YOU WANT! It's literally our job. I always ask clients if there's anything at all they don't like or want changed and I'll fix it. I'm also a people pleaser and understand it's hard to tell people what you want or to criticize someone, but if you're not happy on your wedding day it's just what you have to do.

You guys have apparently never encountered a defensive professional before. It’s uncomfortable. This makeup artist seemed lovely but sometimes you really don’t know how someone is gonna react and it’s just not worth it when you’re already in a high stress situation. Granted…bride had no reason to post this to TikTok. Makeup wasn’t bad. Just turned out to not be the style she wanted. Sometimes when other people do your makeup, you do look different than what you’re used to and it just doesn’t feel right. To me this doesn’t reflect poorly on the MUA at all.

now i relate to this because it’s something i would do but at my big age i would have looked at the artist like “you are amazing! thank you so much!! BUT i don’t feel like myself and it’s gonna give me anxiety can we redo some of it?” I would even pay a larger tip to just feel my best. So yes JUST COMMUNICATE. People are so scared of possible conflict they make a situation more dramatic than it ever needed to be.

I feel so bad for the makeup artist because I can imagine she's going to be second guessing herself now. Since the bride was kind and friendly (nothing wrong there obvs) and the makeup artist couldn't pick up on any indication she was unhappy, she's going to feel like she can't trust her judgement, even after decades of being in her profession. I have social anxiety, I get the fear of telling someone you don't like what they did, but if that is truly the case why post the situation on TikTok?

100%. If she didn’t like the make up, say it to the MUA. If she didn’t want to say it fine, but there was zero need for her to make a TikTok of it, to put it out into the public. Redo your make up and go on with your life. At best she’s just completely inconsiderate that this might affect someone’s business or at worst intentionally mean spirited and knew what she was doing and meant to effect the Mua’s business.

My friend recently was almost on the verge of doing this, washing off her face 20min before the ceremony. She never had makeup professionally done before and even though her makeup looked great on camera, it was too dry and cracking irl as she got dry skin and she didn't ask for natural/glowy finish instead of matte, she didn't know what to ask for. And she was already feeling shitty about that. But there was no time and I & another close friend tried our best to blend the cracks and make it slightly glowy and comfortable with mac fix+, and it kinda worked. But her sister was constantly telling her how horrible it looks (no it wasn't that bad. Most matte finish heavy makeups look like that irl). But she was so conscious, until I show her a few reels/shorts on how heavy makeup actually looks irl. It generally happens to people who aren't used to heavy makeup. So,I really don't think this bride is being genuine here. If she was really freaked out, she would be having a very different reaction, she would be crying

I just LOVED that the makeup artist said "hey, you can do your own makeup, you don't have to hire someone", it shows that she doesn't have a big ego, and come from a very true place. As an ex-wedding photographer I say, it's not easy to deal with weddings. You work a lot, people think they are paying you tons of money but they actually aren't and you get emotional for someone that's not even your friend. You eat terribly, barelly rest for 12 hours, can't have a bad day (I had to work when my grandfather passed away, I often had to work sick). There's more, so much more to it, but well... that's why I'm out.

As a make up artist myself, I have done plenty of makeup on proms, weddings etc. I always ask them to bring their own foundation if they want to because sometimes people like their own brand. I just apply it. I also have them bring their own Mascara If they so choose. Some people don't care. And YES always have a consultation before so you know if it's what they want. I'm not sure if this artist did that. I trust that this artist probably did. This generation is so entitled and loves drama. No consequences. It's sad to know this person maybe ruined this poor woman's career. Disgusting.

If you don't want camera ready makeup, do it yourself. Wedding makeup is literally soft glam, it's not that complicated. Wedding makeup artists use foundation that's heavier duty than a tinted moisturizer, because they're trying to make you look good on camera. Also, don't complain about the shade being off when you're asking for extra bronzer. Extra bronzer makes you look muddy, don't ask for more if you don't want to look off in terms of colour.

I am 100% on the bride's side until she said the tiktok thing. (that's where it crosses into "this is all for views" territory for me.) But yeah i mean, I don't really blame her for not speaking up about not liking it. I've had awful beauty services before and because I have issues with people pleasing and conflict avoidance i just lied and said "i love it thank you", payed, and left. If she would have kept it and then made a tik tok rant about how bad it was and how it ruined her special day and so on people would have been saying things like if you hate it that much do it yourself! So that's exactly what she does. I'm gonna be honest with you though and say I see ZERO difference between the artists makeup job, the bride's makeup job, and her supposedly without makeup. They all look identical to me. 😬

I would never have wanted it to potentially get back to the artist. She's a mean-spirited person. No need for her to say anything at all. Just posting it was enough.

It's that she posted it. The make up artist had no idea, the bride did it herself, she was happy, made the artist think she was happy, and then posted this. It was mean

In all honesty, in my 20+ yrs experience getting treatments, nail techs and makeup artists always comment online "I always ask if they need anything changed" but in REAL LIFE, they are NOT ACCOMMODATING, UNDERSTANDING & get snarky when being asked to modify/change things.... js.. ➡️It's OK if the bride disliked the makeup and took it off ➡️ It's NOT OK if the professional doesn't ask if the client is happy with their service ➡️ it's NOT OK that the communication wasn't had & posted online

Fake “nice girl” all around, no indication to the artist on the day that she was upset, giddy about making a tiktok, waiting months to post her video, pretending she’s worried about it “being awkward,” her friend bending over backwards to fawn over her (she knows what happens if she doesn’t), tagging the artist initially then un-tagging her. Embarrassing

That's so sad! I don't do makeup professionally, I am a photographer, but I do love makeup and somewhat good at it. I did the makeup for my friend little sister's prom. I'm super close with them for many years and I was really honored to be asked to do her makeup. She had an idea in mind, showed me a picture of her inspiration, and after I've done it, she realized that she hated it on her face. She just asked me to redo the look because she wasn't feeling it and she washed her face and I did something else entirely that turned out way more subtle than her original idea, but she loved it! Her mom and I were adamant telling her that it's ok if she doesn't like it, it her prom, she needed to find herself beautiful, because she felt bad but I reassured her that it was 100% ok! Even if I am a photographer at a wedding, before the event I have multiple talk with my bride/groom about if they want to have something specific to be done. It's important to communicate with the people you hire please! We want you to be happy with our job!

It feels like TikTok is just another way to be a “Karen”. I don’t like the term Karen but my point is more that the behaviour is the same, it’s just online and the person or business they’re complaining about can’t immediately respond in the moment. Instead of free stuff and extra privileges, they’re chasing clout, but the entitled behaviour at the expense of someone else is the same. We just haven’t started calling people out for this when it’s on TikTok as much.

The other thing on top of this is that brides typically go for at least one pre-wedding hair appointment AND makeup appointment to test different looks and styles and decide what kind of makeup and hairstyle they want for their wedding and to make sure they like it, and that the hair and makeup professionals can replicate the look exactly the way the bride wants it. So she approved this makeup look at least twice, considering she didn't say anything to the makeup artist the day of, either. This tells me she did all this with the intention of humiliating the makeup artist. I see it says the bride is from southern California, and honestly, that tells me all I need to know.

At my sisters wedding the makeup artist was a close friend of her sister in law and so was the photographer. She felt pressured to let her do her makeup because her sister in law was her close friend and talked about how good she was at makeup. she had all of them in there when she was getting her makeup done. My sister is pretty pale but had a little tan at the time and the makeup artist said half way through she only did makeup on people with darker skin and eyes before her. My sister makeup didn’t fit her too well but it picked up well on camera. Still in person and certain lighting the makeup looked very off. Even though she was a bit disappointed in how it came out she kept the makeup on but I would’ve understood if she didn’t. The makeup this lady here had on didn’t look bad though and imo the makeup the artist did looked the same but a little bolder and better fit for the camera than the way she re did it.

Yeah, the problem was not that she didn´t like the makeup and re did it herself, the problem was doing a tiktok video about it without talking with the MUA first, and then waited 5 months after the wedding to post it? why? what was the reason? you can clearlu hear in the MUA voice how hurt she was that this bride did this

When people go to extra lengths to film stuff, it usually makes me a bit suspicious. If someone is that stressed out, but they have the time to set up their phone, specifically for a TikTok, then i question how stressed out they actually were.

I've gotten makeup done professionally and it is seriously not that hard to just say you want something else lol. One year we tried to do a cut crease look and it was awful on my eye shape, we had a funny moment of deliberating what to do next with little time and made it work. Like just say something, i guarantee a professional makeup artist will just have a conversation with you on what you want

I paid for a makeup trial before my bridal shower - the MUA did a great job but it made me feel a bit orangey/bronzey which was just not me. She & I looked closer at the inspo photos I gave her and sure enough, it looked super similar. She offered me a free do-over trial a different day bc I wasn’t in love with it and I should have scheduled it but I was anxious and felt bad and didn’t end up doing that which was dumb of me lol anyway for the actual wedding day I found better example photos that were more “blushing bride” and I had put in the work to find a lipstick I really liked (one of the things I didn’t like from the original trial) and she did it all perfectly. I felt so beautiful. The big thing was that I figured out what I didn’t like from the trial and communicated it to her with specifics about what I’d like to do differently. She was so professional and truly cared about giving me exactly what I wanted. She even plucked some nose hairs that were apparently too noticeable 😂

The one time I did get a photoshoot and makeup done, I hated it so much. Didn’t feel good about it- it didn’t feel me and it didn’t even make me look any better on film. I sucked it up , did the shoot. Said thank you, and of course paid. But… naaaaw. On a big day like wedding- definitely need to feel good about yourself! Deciding to film and then share it out- that’s a diff story! IMO.

Until her comment about posting on tik tok, I thought it seemed less about the makeup itself and more about anxiety and panicking before a stressful event. Like when you’re stressed and you freak out about one specific thing (like the muffin being the wrong flavour or something that feels really insignificant).

There is a make up trial before wedding that bride and make-up artist decides what kind of make up they will do, bride says what she likes and what she doesn’t. And the make up artist responded the bride’s video, yes they also had make up trial and bride said she liked the lipstick color, she wanted little more bronzer and changer eye shadow color. So, make up artist did the make up as bride wanted and said before, in the wedding day. After I hear “I can’t wait to share this on tiktok”, see you brought your make up bag and when there was 20 minutes left to your wedding but you set up the camera and wash your make up off… I would believe you 😊 If I didn’t see she said this sentence and was ready to film for tiktok, I would say her make up is too daily and even looks like no make up make up. But again, you decided that make up before the wedding, and if you didn’t like it on your wedding day, it was already a simple make up. You would say I want darker shade or eyeliner, or more this… She could change it. It was better than washing it 20 minutes left. You didn’t want to tell her you didn’t like the make up, but you said rest of the world. That is why I didn’t believe the bride. All she cared about was content, likes and followers

5 months is exactly how long it took for my brother and his wife to get their wedding photos after the editing. Coincidence? Also she did in fact tag her on her bio and the instagram video, the only real reason she didn’t tag her on TikTok cuz the artist didn’t even have a TikTok account to tag on TikTok.

The filming and the posting on tiktok ("can't wait to make a tiktok") makes it pretty obvious it was just done for views and she didn't care if the artist got hurt. The whole video felt very performative to me. The way the makeup artist spoke in her video, her voice subtly shaking, made me feel bad for her. I'm inclined to believe her side of the story having seen both videos.
