A gift someone gave us for our wedding was a handmade basket (made out of recycled wood paneling). They couldn’t afford anything else. We didn’t need a gift, we would have been happy for them to attend the wedding without one but they felt obligated to bring one. We still have that basket with pretty plants inside a clay pot inside the basket. That man who made the basket is dead now but I think about him when I see the basket. It was a very thoughtful gift.

When my first college roommate/bff got married she asked me to be a bridesmaid. She just asked us to choose a black dress I would wear again and liked, because she hated the idea of us having to buy a dress that we'd never wear again. She lived in NY and I lived in Philly, about a 2-3 hour drive. So she knew I couldn't help out too much. I drove up for the bridal shower, a month before the wedding to share in that pre wedding festivity. Even though, I lived farther away than most of the wedding party, I still wanted to participate and support her. Her mother made it a point to show me off to the whole family, when I arrived. She introduced me to everyone saying incredulously, "She's a bridesmaid and she drove all the way from Philly to be here for today, as well!!" Making sure everyone knew how appreciative and grateful they were that I took the time to be there. I did get to help pick the dress. She had narrowed it down to 2 and had pix of them. She and I always had similar tastes. So when I instantly gasped and chose the gorgeous strapless one with bright hand embroidered flowers on the bodice and full skirt, she was so happy, as it was her favorite, as well. It was still a very traditional white wedding dress with pops of colored embroidered flowers. She was married in a flower/herb garden outside, so the dress was perfect. The wedding was beautiful. And though her older sister was a bit of a brat on the day, it was probably the loveliest wedding I ever attended. When I hear these stories, I feel so lucky that that was my one and only bridesmaid story and it was for the best bride😊

I also have a BA and MA in history, so sometimes combined the two (educational work or writing courses for young historians). The amount of times I've been asked to work for "portfolio" "the mentioning of your name on our website" and more is too innumerable to count. And my expertise and educational background was rather extraordinary to say the least. But even if not... It is freaking ridiculous. I only lowered my rates for foundations who worked with subsidies, because they truly couldn't afford more (And when I considered the project important enough). Problem is; diploma or not, our talents and experience is simply not taken serious by many. After all... anyone can write a text, right? P.S. My husband-to-be and I sized up our mothers, KNEW that independently they are lovely women, but between them they would turn our wedding into a nightmare as they wrestled for who got to be in charge. So we eloped. $70 marriage license, $50 to the judge which she donated to charity, 3 friends and a bunch of fun photos where the judge let me slap the handcuffs on my hubby. A week later we told everyone that we were married. That was 15 years ago now. We did have a lovely reception eventually in my MIL's back yard with close friends and family, and by that time both of our mothers were just laughing about it and free to enjoy themselves. Strongly recommend that to anyone who doesn't want their wedding to turn into a circus!

Wedding gifts were originally meant to help young couples build a home with the appliances and necessities (because people used to get married young, often without living apart from their parents first). If you already have all your household needs left, why TF does anybody need to buy you Gucci bags just because you decided to get married? what?
@amstreater3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, people forget what the purpose of wedding gifts was supposed to be. Plus weddings used to be local and relatively small (I mean, I'm guessing) not these huge affairs with hundreds of guests and thousands of dollars of flowers. People used to spend their money on a marriage not a wedding, and gifts were a gesture from loved ones to help them out. People forget that gifts are GIFTS not an entrance fee.

@@amstreater The royalty and nobility used to throw giant weddings and invite people 'under their care' to join in the celebration and enjoy good food, everyone else had smaller weddings or a wedding with the entire church congregation so there's a lot of people there, but only like 10-20 are there specifically for the marriage. Now church attendance has gotten lower and the age people get married at has gotten higher it turned out like this. You want a full church but aren't really a believer? Then you invite 200 people to fill the place up. Can't afford that? Ask for money.. I'm basic, I just give a box of assorted chocolates and 100 bucks at any wedding I go to. And a result of poor parenting, which comes from never being told "NO", always having a parent who blames others when her daughter is the guilty one, etc. It's normal for a Bride-to-be's nerves to be frayed, but seriously, they forget that the #1 thing to remember is that she's marrying the love of her life & it's not about spending a ton of $$, parents mortgaging their home, who can buy the most expensive gives, has a wedding bachelorette party that rivals in the money spent on the actual wedding. Unfortunately this seems to be what entitled young people expect. How about if they were paying for it themselves? It is possible to have a very nice wedding without breaking the bank. Like you're not Extra Special Married by spending tens of thousands, you're the same amount of married as people who just go to the registry office or whatever lol My partner and I have been together 15 years and we're not married yet, I'd be perfectly happy with just the basic registry office thing. Main reason we haven't is because whenever the subject comes up, family start trying to plan it for us. In the US, cash gifts should be returned if the wedding gets canceled. If it is postponed, though, there is no obligation to return, under the premise that the wedding WILL be happening in the near future. Her loss, the bride is a beautiful soul and one of the nicest people I've ever met. SO yeah, MotB is a jerk, but I did not expect her to try to back out of the mother-daughter dance. At the ceremony. Without telling the bride. Instead she told **me** and then asked me to not tell the bride, said she wanted her to be surprised when she was left out on the floor while her husband danced with his mother. Needless to say I did not keep that a secret, 100% told the bride ASAP and her new father-in-law danced with her instead without giving the 'mom' time to try to pull her stunt.

What my honey and I did was we spend as little on the actual wedding as we could possibly do so that we made sure that we had plenty of food and dance and drink for the party afterwards! We wanted to party and celebrate with our families, the ceremony was just a formality! Celebrating together is everything!

Just sign the contract and meet up with some friends to drink some tea and eat a little 3$ cake :D I do not consider this as a wedding at all. Weddings do not have to cost thousands, or even hundreds. I got married during the pandemic and the whole thing cost less than £300. Including my wedding dress. It’s about marrying the person you love, not about showing off and making people buy you expensive gifts. People really need to get their life in perspective and calm down. I would love to feed anyone i invite to my home as a hostess, I just don't know where this etiquette stops and starts as most times our places of work give us a break and during that break it is up to us to figure out what we'll eat. If someone says "your break is at this time please bring a lunch and snacks." then I don't think that is a big deal as that is already our culture for the common workplace. Might I add, I still think it's great to provide a meal with the break. I just also don't think you're a bad person if you provide the break and refrigerator space only.

How do people learn to be that entitled? I feel bad even at the thought of a gift registry. It feels tacky. And yet some brides have the audacity to ask for something that’s AT LEAST $400? Insane.

If was going to that wedding then I would make a point of buying the bride something that costs $50.00 and wouldn't inform her beforehand. Fuck that shit, how rude!
@lisaspikes42913 жыл бұрын
I like the bridal registry. It makes it easy for the guests to pick something that the bride and groom really want. Instead of a tacky ashtray! ( do they even make ashtrays anymore?) But putting an inflated dollar amount minimum, and expecting each guest to spend $400 or more is absolutely tacky! It’s not the bride or groom’s place to dictate the gifts they will receive! If I get invited to a wedding of people I kinda know, but are not really close friends, or very distant relatives, my limit is $50-$75 for a gift or cash gift. I think that’s appropriate. If it’s someone I really love, like a close family member or friend, I will go much higher. But that’s my decision. It’s not to be dictated by the happy couple!

@@lindab424 Personally there would be zero chance of me attending a wedding if the bride posted something like this. The entitlement needs to be rewarded with no gifts and no attendance. That being said, it would be pretty hilarious to see her face when she opened up some gucci or noras box just to see a kitchenaid spatula.
@kitarrah14223 жыл бұрын
A gift registry isn't really tacky, in my opinion. It is merely a suggestion of things that the bride and groom need (small appliances, towels, bedding, etc.) to set up their new marital home, and helps to avoid people buying the same thing. What I did was pick a lot of things in varying price points, so that even if someone could only afford say $10, they still could get us something we needed and would appreciate. There certainly was no expectation of fancy/expensive gifts from everyone, nor was there a set minimum amount they had to spend.

Right??? My mom works as a cake decorator and she had to call a woman about some issues with her cake order (whoever took the cake order wasn't a cake decorator who knew about some of the regulations). Despite my mother being very clear on a pretty alternative that she could do, the lady acted like she was super confused and didn't know what my mom was saying, then proceeded to go, "I'm sorry. I'm just flustered. I want my wedding day to be perfect and my friends aren't doing what I assigned to them," or something like that, and it's like, okay. If you guys talked it out and planned something and they aren't doing what they said they'd do, then yeah it might be shitty. At the end of the day though, it is YOUR wedding that you should have thoroughly planned and saved up for. Not to mentioned that it seemed like she ordered the cake with special instructions later than she was supposed to. Some of the things she wanted required ordering weeks in advance, but she decided to call a little over a week to order it.

Lessons learned: - Don't ask for donations. If I cannot afford an expensive wedding, I should not have an expensive wedding. One of my aunts literally had a wedding in the bushes with my immediate family and her mom (my grandma), so I KNOW that weddings DON'T have to be expensive with like 100+ guests. - Don't ask for gifts. Honestly I would still pay her for her services even if she did it for free cause her time is worth something. I do that with my nail tech and it worked. I helped my nail tech to move with my husband, 12 hours later I got paid, and I sent her $60.00, she called me in tears. Long story short, when I sent the money, at that moment she got served with foreclosure papers. Her landlords house was up for foreclosure and didn’t include that piece of information when they rented the house. Somehow in one weird way, she knew it was going to be ok. I’m helping her again move now for the second time, and I don’t care if I got my services for free. Her time away from her babies shouldn’t be free. In other words pay up. lol
