The entire American oil refinery capacity is mostly based on Canadian oil. Couple of years to retool to eliminate Canadian oil. Pot ash, aluminum, uranium, among many other commodities. We have way more trade agreements, and we are diverse. As a G7 country we can and must diversify on where we trade. Since our situation has changed with our partner. Let’s move away from this relationship before it becomes more abusive. We do have allies besides the US.

I’ve been doing this for several years. Except for having to pass up some deals a few times, it hasn’t been a problem. People don’t realise how much food Canada produces and how many of our fruits and vegetables come from the countries other than the U.S. We grow tomatoes, lettuce and other vegetables year round in hothouses. Frozen vegetables are grown and packaged here. Add to that dairy, meat, poultry and seafood plus basics like flour, tea, coffee.

Except for some imported cheese and maybe yoghurt, all our dairy is from Canada. The same goes for chicken. Canada exports seafood, beef and grains. We grow lettuce, tomatoes and peppers in hothouses and on rooftops. Besides, cows produce too much milk for most families and are expensive to feed and maintain. I’d recommend goats, probably a very small one for a couple and can do fine even in a small backyard. They’re also very social so you’ll need a second one. Forget about vacations and plan on being home twice a day, unless you have a neighbour willing to do the milking.

This Liberals have kicked, insulted, lied and disrespected the Canada taxpayer for the last 9 years while at the same time doing nothing but funding money into their favorite self interest groups. It is time to pay and the Liberals are going to pay dearly. Brian Mulroney to Kim Campbell anyone? How about our government prepares for it and figure out how to go forward without depending on the states like countries all around the world are. The US is in a downward spiral and Trump will make it worse. I don’t want to hitch my wagon to that mess. Trump will either cut government spending and increase unemployment or print money and drive up inflation. Use his first term as an example if you can remember that.

If the USA levies a general 25% tariff against all imports, the rest of the world will retaliate by levying a similar tariff against the USA. What this means is that specialized US manufacturers that make unique products (think Boeing or companies that make specialized industrial equipment) will want to set up branch plants that are outside the US tariff wall. They will want plants in the US for the US market, and outside the US for selling to the rest of the world. This is an opportunity for Canada, to seek out those US exporters that will want to set up plants outside the US to service the non-US market. Another opportunity is server farms, which will grow with the development of AI. Server farms use a lot of electricity, and Canada has cheaper electricity than the US and a greater ability to expand electricity production than the US (think hydropower expansion in BC, Quebec & Newfoundland and nuclear expansion in Ontario). A US company with large servers (think Facebook or Google), if they imported electricity from Canada, would have to pay a 25% tariff on the electricity, but if they located the server in Canada, what's the tariff on data? Zero. Another opportunity is exports of commodities to the rest of the world. The value of the Canadian dollar will probably fall as a result of the US tariff, but this makes Canadian commodities more competitive in European and Asian markets. We need to invest in the infrastructure required to esport more commodities overseas (and to process them more in Canada). So there are plenty of opportunities, once you put your mind to it.
@grottu20 сағат бұрын
US aint really exporting much. They moved most plants out of country (even John deere moving to Mexico this year). EU doesn't want American food or farm products due to strict regulations and definitely don't want cars due emission standards. Last time Trump was in charge he "offended" China what was taking huge amount of grains....not that much anymore. They don't have much more things or places to export their stuff
@polishtheday19 сағат бұрын
Excellent points, though we need to be careful about allowing companies to set up server farms and AI data centres as there have been problems with these taking up so much capacity that they’ve shut down the grid. Instead we might start building more Canadian CANDU reactors to provide more power first. With the right financing in place, and only governments have the ability to do this fast, it could only take three to five years, a short time for big power projects.

Farmland does NOT love stagflation. Predatory VCs LOVE farmland during periods of stagflation. During stagflation, food producers' margins shrink (often as food retailers'margins increase, until there is a market crash). Passive investors rw able to buy frmland at large discounts to real value, due to thebpressure on producers' margins. These passive investors are not buying farmland to continuebto peoduce food. They are byying farmland at discount prices to take it out of food production. Our economybis in the tank because passive (as opposed tl active) investment is all these guys do, now.
