Davos even says "we may as well be taking shits back here" because they quite literally did nothing in fear of killing their own men. Also, if they didn't go in when the encirclement was gonna happen it's possible the others that were out there just get slaughtered before Sansa and Little Finger even arrive. They bought themselves enough time for them to come save the day

The real question is how did a Mormont shield get in front of Jon for him to pick up if none of Jon's allies (mormont soldiers) were ever there to drop the shield? All of Jon's men were behind him or to the sides. That shield had no business being there unless it had been there before the battle started.

Even tho Sansa should be honest with her family etc. it actually worked out for the best that she didn’t tell Jon about the vale, had he had them with his army from the start Ramsey probably would have kept his army inside the walls, but he thought Jon’s army was smaller so it ended up luring out ramseys army to then get hit with a surprise attack from the vale
@gunkulator1
@gunkulator1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, that was the plan she made when she met with Littlefinger. Recall that we don't get to see the end of that meeting. Ramsay only came out from behind Winterfell's walls because he thought he had an easy victory. When the two sides parley, he gives Jon an accurate account of Jon's troops, they're number and make up, so we can assume he had spies in Jon's camp before the battle. Shortly after that, notice how Sansa goads Jon into shouting they don't have enough men. She intended this too to get back to Ramsay - It's the same trick Robb pulls in Season 1 against the Lannisters.

@@gunkulator1 nah they showed Sansa in that episode hesitating to reach send a raven to little finger and only did so once she realized they had no other choice. What you described would have been better in terms of making Sansa actually have some degree of strategy and intelligence but the way they filmed clearly is meant to show that she was holding off asking little finger for help until she realized she didn’t have a choice, when they were in the barn all evidence pints to that interaction ending with Sansa telling little finger to F off not coming up with a surprise attack

Tbh... I don't think there really is a solid reasoning in the heads of the writers as to why Sansa hid this knowledge from Jon. I think it was just meant to give her a big moment. And its not much deeper than her having trust issues. It should've been a much bigger plot point, but alas... its not. I feel like Sansa, starting season 6, doesn't really have solid characterization... Shes just whatever they need her to be scene to scene. You can tell they wanted her to have this amazing coming of age swan story... but it just comes across as jarring and contradictory.
@gunkulator1
@gunkulator1 Жыл бұрын
@@yomamma.ismydaddy216 Getting the knights of the Vale all the way to within striking distance of Winterfell could not be a decision left to the night right before the battle. They had to already be in position. Littlefinger was coming with them no matter what Sansa decided. He had promised young Jon Arryn they were going to Winterfell to help. It was up to Sansa to play her part to make Jon's forces look so weak so that Ramsay would give up his superior position behind the walls of Winterfell and come out to battle them. It's the only plan that would ensure victory. Had Jon and Sansa managed to rally a substantially larger force, Ramsay never comes out to battle. The whole plan depended on Ramsay believing he had an easy victory. Of course Sansa hesitates to tell Littlefinger. Who wouldn't, especially after how he abandoned her to Ramsay's tender mercies?
@CarrCab
@CarrCab Жыл бұрын
@@starsimvidz I completely disagree. If Jon knew about the Knights of the Vale, Lord Royce at the very least would be at their camp in all war meetings. Ramsey would know this, he states in their parley earlier in the ep how he does have intel into Jon's plans and camp. The element of surprise was the ONLY way to defeat Ramsey. Sansa telling Jon would have doomed the Starks for the remainder of the series. They would have died there. Ramsey would have remained behind the walls of Winterfell, and Jon had not one single piece of equipment for a siege. His plan was always and only a direct attack on the field of battle. In a siege, Jon's army either dies or abandons him as Stannis's did, Sansa kills herself to not go back to Ramsey, does anyone even really care about Arya and Bran after season 4, and so that's the end of the Starks if she had told him of the Vale. I will agree the show did not explain this well, but it makes far more political and logical sense than just "I was raped, so I have trust issues now and won't tell the one person in the entire world I'm related to, and trust this information."

If Jon knew about the Vale, he would have included them in his battle plans which would have drastically changed Ramsey's own battle plans. The flayed men on the crosses on the battlefield were certainly put there for intimidation. There's a lot of instances of such things in history be it catapulting severed heads into the enemies fortress or camp and similarly to here, the Vikings would often leave "decorations" in raided towns and villages in England in the 800's. Intimidation was a huge part of warfare and still is to some degree. I imagine it is far easier to fight people if they're afraid to fight you. Even on a lesser scale, when barbarians lined up and screamed at Roman infantry lines that was to intimidate them, when armies start beating their drums, that's to intimidate the enemy and bolster the courage of their own army. It's all about making that enemy force that little bit less eager to fight you, in the bigger picture that can help you win battles.

What a time to be alive, I love that people are rediscovering the glory that was GoT in it's prime but also sad they couldn't experience it in real time, now so much of the show has been tainted sadly by the last 2 seasons which most new watchers now are aware of. @@Al-ji4gd It prioritised tension and evocative imagery over realism and that's fine. I would never want the encirclement or Jon's last stand to be removed from this episode. The sense of dread and the imagery of Jon accepting death and being reborn is too good to get rid of. It made absolutely no sense for Stannis to land and lead the charge in the Battle Of the Blackwater *unlike in the books* where he logically didn't participate - *there was an extremely high chance of him being shot by the archers in particular just like all the fodder with no plot armour.* But no one complained.

@@idakev Yes, but Blackwater is a good episode. This isn't. One moment where there is a lack of realism is not enough to dismiss the episode, but with BOTB there are so many instances of it, as well as bad writing, predictable storytelling and shoddy dialogue. That Jon scene is manipulative cinema, designed to make people feel a certain away despite the whole thing being preposterous.

i hate tyrion’s interaction with theon in this episode because when they last saw each other theon was not making jokes about his height and tyrion was the one antagonizing theon, making fun of his “devotion to his captors”, further sowing the seeds of theon’s betrayal. Theon only called him “imp” in response to his provocations.

It could have also been that Tyrion had heard from some Lannister soldiers or somebody else that Theon was telling mean jokes about his hight when he was not around. He never said Theon was saying it to his face. Could be that's why he was antagonizing him immediately in their conversation in Winterfell.

Excellent reaction 🙌🏻 People can be so hard on Sansa for not telling Jon but she played the game and they won. Jon refuses to listen to her, decides they're going to go with who they have, and she did send the raven but she doesn't know if Littlefinger and The Knights of the Vale will make it in time or at all, or Ramsay could ambush them at any point like he did with Stannis. She wants her home back at all costs, she's been abused, walking on eggshells, never safe and passed around aa a pawn since Season 1, she has trust issues understandably, she played a power move. Yes they lost a lot of men but it's war, Robb did something similar by sending his men to death in order to take a win against the Lannisters, Sansa knows men will die but they died fighting for the Starks, for Winterfell, for the North and there's honour in that at least. And the ultimate revenge at the end against her abuser - absolutely deserved 👏🏻.

It baffles my mind how people just want to hate on Sansa for no good reason. We never saw her get a reply to her letter to Baelish. And her conversation with Jon the night before the battle confirms that she had no idea if the Vale army was coming. She was clearly nervous and very afraid. The last thing she told Jon was that if they lost, she was not going back alive. Those are not the words of someone who knows they have an army on the way.
@sirimity
@sirimity Жыл бұрын
I love Sansa, but she still could have told Jon. He didn’t refuse to listen to her, he asked her for her opinion and all she said was I don’t know it’s not enough. He knew it wasn’t enough, he didn’t know that she had asked someone else for help. Had she said, “I sent a letter for more aid, let’s wait to hear if they’re coming,” then he would have waited. The only reason he went into the battle, was because he thought there was no one else that would join their fight.
@amylamourxoxo
@amylamourxoxo Жыл бұрын
@@sirimity I do understand that she could've been honest and told him, but had they waited for more men then Ramsay would've had the advantage still, he's cunning and ruthless and she knows that. She wanted to win and this is her being cunning and ruthless in her own Stark way. Love her too and she's got faults and I can't totally defend her as if it was me irl I would've told Jon but taking into account her experiences as a character and her journey I think it makes sense. I love Jon too but he was pretty dismissive to her in the meeting in the tent the night before. Obviously she doesn't know anything about battles and Jon doesn't know anything about mental warfare so they were both at odds in that regard. But they prevailed 🐺🤍
@NovaLena22
@NovaLena22 Жыл бұрын
@@amylamourxoxo I disagree that Sansa was being 'cunning' by not telling Jon. As I said, she did not in any way sound like someone who knew that a huge army was on its way to help them. However, I do agree with you about Jon's dismissiveness toward Sansa with every piece of advice she gave him. Given the way he scrapped his own strategy, I suspect if she had told him, he would have messed it up anyway.
@gunkulator1
@gunkulator1 Жыл бұрын
@@NovaLena22 No, Sansa had a pretty good idea that Littlefinger was coming. She already knows that he devised a plan to kill Joffrey because he was just too unstable to work with. Ramsay was way worse. What people seem to miss is that Sansa is straight up manipulating Jon before the battle. Recall that in the parley, Ramsay gives an accurate account of Jon's forces, their number and make up. Clearly Ramsay has spies in Jon's camp as he also did with Stannis. Sansa goads Jon into shouting that their cause is hopeless and they don't have enough men. This was intended to get back to Ramsay. Ramsay wins by default if all he does is stay behind the walls of Winterfell. He only emerged with his army because he was very confident of an easy victory. The knights of the Vale only defeat Ramsay if he's committed his troops outside Winterfell.

Art Parkinson: Hello, Art Parkinson here. D&D: Hi, Ant! It's D&D. Art excitedly closes the newspaper in which he's been reading the job ads. 'Checkout operator, minimum wage.' Art: D&D! Wow, it's really good to hear from you again. It's been years! By the way, it's 'Art', not 'Ant'. D&D: Are you sure? We spelled it 'Ant' on every script. Anyway, listen, we have some good news for you. Art screws up the CV he's been writing. Realises he'd put ANT PARKINSON at the top. Art: Go on. D&D: Of course, if you're busy, acting, all that stuff. . . . Art: Well, it's pretty non-stop but I'll always make time for you guys. D&D: That's great, Ant. Listen, we're writing the final scripts for Season 6, and we were thinking 'something's missing', and then we realised: we need Rickon Stark back. Art fights to keep control. Art: That's great, guys, I'm really pleased you thought about me. D&D: [Pause] Well, actually, we wanted to recast him with someone hotter, you know, like we did with Myrcella. But that fell through so we thought, why not call our old pal Ant Pankinson? You'd only be in two episodes but one of them is Episode 9, our big epic 'Battle of the Bastards', and you'll play a pivotal role. Art is almost beside himself. D&D: That is, if you can get time off from the movie or the West End, whatever you're up to these days. How about it? Art: This is fantastic news, guys, of course I'll do it! D&D: That's great, we'll send a runner over with the contract. See you in Belfast in a couple of months! Art: Just before you go, when do I get the script? I must have a lot of lines to learn. Awkward silence. D&D: Listen, Ant . . . you don't need a script. How can we put this . . . . ............................................. Great episode and a great reaction but I always remember how they wasted two characters, brought them back for no real reason - and for Rickon to have not one word of dialogue is absurd.

Episodes 6.9 and 6.10 together may be the best television ever produced. The flaming Xs with men tied to them are range markers for the archers. The battle of Cannae 216BC is still taught today. Hannibal from Carthage tricked a Roman army of eighty thousand men into a half circle then closed in behind. Virtually eighty thousand died in the hot afternoon sun, half by crushing and smothering. This was the basis of the Blitzkrieg in WW2 as well as the Battle of Kuwait in the first Gulf War. Tanks, planes, artillery have replaced cavalry and slingers but the plan is the same: surround your enemy, cut him off from supply or retreat and destroy him from all sides.
