This was the first thing I saw Renée Zellweger in, so I was so shocked when I found out she isn't British. She really mastered that accent.

My mom and I always watch that movie around christmas time for years and years and years now and I'm still living for that fight scene and the soundtrack 😄

I was not expecting a Sorted reference... that made me very happy for some reason, those guys are so much fun :D My high-school english teacher really knew how to handle us young people so everything we read was dramatized and we always read the novel and saw the movie/tv series along side it so we could debate and compare. Two of the things we saw/read were Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones' Diary :D

If you read the Bridget Jones Diary book, you will quickly see that the character Bridget was constantly watching the TV series Pride & Prejudice, where she especially loved Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, and in between, the character Bridget was also always talking about the scandal when Hugh Grant cheated on his ex wife, who was Elizabeth Hurley. I hadn't read the first book before I saw the first movie, but I thought it was very funny that these two, who were mentioned so often in the book, were chosen to star in the movie. But then I heard that, Helen Fielding, the author of the books, thought of these two actors in the roles of these characters, so it is natural that they play them. And yes it was supposed to be Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and not just Colin Firth, so Colin just went back to some version of Mr Darcy.

The Mrs. dragged me to this rom-com when it was in theaters, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a jolly good romp overall (aside from Jones’ pining and brooding and longing and the excruciatingly lame "fight" between Grant and Firth that felt tacked on for a dramatic burst or something) mostly, as you said, because of the stellar casting of some of UK’s greatest treasures----Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent, Celia Imrie, and, yes, the Great Scot Shirley “Moaning Myrtle” Henderson? Fugeddaboutit! It helps that we’re both Anglophiles, and I’m a big British history buff. Regency England always has intrigued me, from the birth of “Frankenstein” to the cultural life of the period depicted in the Austen realms. It was almost like a dress rehearsal for the Victorian Era, minus the mourning and the imperial and industrial largesse.

The "fight" is supposed to be lame and its purpose was comedy, certainly not dramatic burst.

I watched this movie at the movie theater when it first came out and my best friend, who is Japanese, went with me. When the mum character made the remark about Japanese being a cruel race, my friend burst out in roaring laughter. I think some things are just not meant to be taken too serious in movies.

Hi, Alexa. I posted a few hours ago but my comment seems to have disappeared. Removed? Can't see any reason why. More likely I neglected to hit the comment button. Don't you hate that? First, may I say how refreshing it is to see a reactor covering non-American, specifically 'contemporary' Britcom material. We wouldn't be blamed for assuming the US is the only country that has a film industry at all (they call them 'movies' over there, don't you know!), the way those Patreonista carry on. Especially a reactor as erudite and informed as you. Your knowledge of classical theatre and literature, ancient mythology, fashion history/costuming etc. continue to impress. I agree Colin Firth's Darcy knows no peer, despite some worthy competition. Hugh Grant is good at being Hugh Grant, charming and irascible in equal measure, but never seems to be much else. As for Renee Zeilweger, her vulnerability and comedic timing is a perfect fit. I first saw her as 'Miss Potter' (Beatrix) and was astonished subsequently to discover she's not only American, but Texan to boot. I'm sure she could play some hard-bitten redneck fishwife just as seamlessly. It's a rich genre for exploration, but for me the crowning glory is Richard Curtis's 2000 'Love, Actually.' Just about everyone who is/was anyone in British cinema at the time is in it (you will know them). It has humour and genuine pathos in generous lashings, and is the perfect Christmas movie (oops). The season has passed but I would relish a reaction to that one some time nonetheless. You make some interesting and quirky choices at times and I love that. But personally I'm not one for space/scifi fantasies or sword-and-sorcery epics (except for Tolkien) which leaves a lot of your creative output out. But all power to you, cultivated lady, and look forward to more.

Thank you so much - I don't really choose the movies I watch - it is all based on audience or patreon polls, so you can thank them for the reactions I do! I am considering implementing a few commentary movie Saturdays where I do choose the material. I've tried to watch Love, Actually a few times, but didn't manage to get past the first 10 minutes (I am not usually good with romcoms!) But I'll give it another go at some point. Let me know if you have any movie recommendations!

I sometimes have mic issues, sorry about that. Because I live in CA, I cannot afford a place of my own, so I am just renting a recording space. As a result, I have to put up and take down all the equipment every time. I do my best to test it, but sometimes it just doesn’t work properly for certain recording sessions. Someday if I am uber rich and can afford my own place, I will be able to leave all the equipment up tuned in to perfection!

Yeah, real Hugh Grant is worse than his character here, and all I can say there is, if he looked like Shrek instead of a Disney prince, he'd be done. (Shouts at screen as if he can hear) You'd be done, son!
