Some context on the casting: Starting from 1994, Hugh Grant had an insane run as a huge romcom star with lead roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sense and Sensibility and Notting Hill - all classics you should react to by the way. Even Nine Months (1995) though terrible was a hit at the time. In all those films, he played an endearingly awkward bumbling nervous type, a sensitive man who falls in love usually with a woman out of his league. He's extremely charming in a dorky way. So playing Daniel Cleaver, the villain in Bridget Jones Diary (2001), and who IS charming but in a sleazy way, was contrary to how he'd been typecast at the time. Plus Richard Curtis who wrote this movie also wrote many of Hugh's previous hits so it was kind of a joke between them that he was going against his onscreen softboy persona. This was Hugh transitioning to the more arseholey persona he had in films like About A Boy (a delightful film with Tony Collette, Rachel Weisz and tiny Nicholas Hoult) and a lot of his later romcoms, before his Hughnaissance since 2015-16. Colin Firth had played Mr Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, often regarded as the definitive adaptation by book fans, so him playing Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones is a clear reference. And Renee is an American from Texas so her casting was super controversial at the time but she worked very hard at a specific middle class London British accent and pulls it off very near flawlessly!

He's pretty funny in Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia 2. The King's Speech got him an Oscar. He makes a great flawed-dad-trying-his-best in Nanny McPhee. I don't love his plot line in Love Actually but he makes it work? And of course he is the quintessential Darcy in the BBC Pride & Prejudice mini series. And he has a villain role in Shakespeare in Love (don't see it just for him, though, he's just one small part of a great cast overall)

A charming movie that holds up decently minus the 2000's insane normalisation of constant body shaming.
@Johnny_Socko9 ай бұрын
I think of this film more as a document of body shaming rather than another perpetuator of it. I always assumed that we are meant to sympathize with Bridget being a victim of ridiculous body standards (especially back then). Although there is no character who outright says, "Hey! Body shaming is bad!", the film kind of puts it out there for the audience to be the judge. Maybe the book was more overt, but I don't know.

I, personally, don't think Mark or Daniel are worthy of Bridget (you made a great observation - her friends are enough). But the movie is set up in a way that makes Mark the lesser of two problematic men and therefore the one most veiwers side with. It also doesn't help that I've never understood the Colin Firth love... and that Hugh Grant is an always intriguing rascal 😂 I hope you watch the other 2 Bridget Jones' movies ❤

*QUESTION FOR BRITS:* How was Renee Zellweger's accent in _Bridget Jones's Diary?_ Like 99.9% of straight guys, I watched it on a date. With a girl. Didn't really think much of it at the time. But I just re-watched it, and it's actually a surprisingly decent movie. At the time, I couldn't tell a good British accent from a bad one, but living in Holland 2003-2008 I watched a lot of BBC. And although I sometimes find British accents sounding believable that turn out to be way off ... Zellweger sounds pretty good. Or am I completely wrong again. And it's terrible to a Brit.

I rented this at Blockbuster because I thought Renee Zellweger was pretty. I thought it was an alright movie but I really didn't have much reasons to like the sequel. It seems like a pretty bad movie to me, and I can't remember anything about the third movie. Surprise though, google tells me there's a 4th film coming out next year. Maybe that can redeem the series. I would ask you to at least consider not bringing the next two films to youtube, and maybe see Renee's film New in Town instead. Also Jerry Maguire if you wanna make it a two for two swap. Jess I miss the MCU content, but it's alright about it I guess. You know what though? You should just go straight for X-Men 97. It's a straight up superhero soap opera and it's been wild. It's highly praised, the best thing Marvel has done, and we hear that sometimes, but this one is lots of fun. It's still holding a 98% rating and the final episode of ten is next week. It stayed at 100% for a couple of days.
