Renée's accent as Bridget was widely approved by us Brits and just her general understanding of British humour and culture. She just "gets it" in a way that most other American actors don't when they are playing British roles. When her casting was first announced, it was met with quite a lot of backlash due to her being American (Bridget Jones was already quite a famous character in the UK as her fictional "diary" had been serialised in a British newspaper for several years, later turned into a novel, and then finally a movie), but once the film came out people realised she was definitely the right choice for the role.

“Poof” is a soft slur for a homosexual man. Perhaps equivalent to “homo” rather than the F-word. I think this was rated M in the UK - meaning 15+. Strong language isn’t enough for an R-rating in most other English speaking countries. There would have to also be graphic nudity and/or hard drug use to attract an 18+ rating.

JUST came across yer channel and am pleasantly surprised. Loved this watchalong with you two. I take it that as the movie progressed and you got more and more quiet, then around the 17 minute mark you two were just shouting at yer tv sets "don't take him back!", lol I take it you were really getting into it. As for the end credits paddling pool scene, that was for U.S. markets. Try googling the U.K. version, it's got the movie character's giving their thoughts on it all, straight to the camera. It wasn't necessarily a point of getting a main american actress for demographics sake, but Renée worked really hard to just get an audition. I hope you try more by the same screenwriter, you may have already seen some stuff by him, Richard Curtis, he's got some great roms under his belt: Four Weddings & A Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually, About Time...

Hugh Grant said he was surprised she was American, he didn't know who she was and when she first spoke she sounded like a native. Even in the 90's - swearing wouldn't be enough to get an R rating over here either, nor would breast nudity.

Not Britain, but I think it was rated 11+ in Sweden, which is quite typical. Nudity and bad language isn't something we R-rate.

@@BluntReactionsBB I guess the social impact depends on the culture. In a country where nudity is seen as something perfectly natural, there's no need to R rate it. But we do rate gore and violence.

I always found Bridget a bit desperate and its very upper middle class. But ok as a tv film. Could you react to some classic 80s films like saint elmos fire and lost boys. The next Bridget is better her accent was ok.lol
