Bridget Welsh: “Very Possible” That PAS Could Govern Malaysia One Day
Bridget Welsh is an independent political scientist and scholar who has lived in (and analysed) ASEAN and Malaysian social, political and economic developments for over three-and-a-half decades, writing books and advising companies and NGOs on how to navigate one of the world’s most important and exciting regions.
Welsh's views on Malaysia's- and ASEAN’s future are explosive and troubling. They are also truthful and nuanced. This could be one of the most important discussions anyone can consume in this era of great change, risk and opportunity.
Listen with an open heart and a constructive mind. It might yet help you navigate an uncertain future.

Hi everyone I hope you’re enjoying the conversations I’ve been having with the guests on the channel: if you have, my heartfelt thanks to you for giving me your attention and time: I truly am most grateful. You’ll be glad to know, however, that I’d like this channel to keep getting larger and larger. By that I mean, to be able to have the chance to speak to clever people of high integrity not just here in Malaysia but elsewhere in the region as well, as Asia grows in stature around the world. And that means The Do More Podcast channel has to be more .. influential. Which in today’s world, equates to subscriber numbers, sigh. So if you could, please take a couple of seconds to subscribe to the channel, and if you’d like to be notified of new content as well, to click on the bell icon as well. Thanks so much!!! Stay safe, be well and seize the day! Carpe Diem!! Bests .. Chuang

I think this is an important and insightful podcast. One reason I think is the non-partisan, objective and unemotional nature of discourse. We need to look at the changing landscape objectively, look objectively at why the landscape is changing and then we have a clearer picture of what can be done One thing is for sure - there is very little political will to make positive changes. This is not only true of the current administration, but has been a perennial Malaysian problem for a long time.

Bridget Welsh gives insightful ,balanced and heart-felt comments about Malaysia. Much respect for the lady. She should be made political advisor to the government. Her comments about the 'deepening of the Green movement " in Penang is spot on. In the not too distant future Penang will be governed by PAS/PN and assimilated as part of Kedah.

if PAS takes over then the question would be how radical will this government be; and if it gets too radical there is a good possibility that non-Muslims would seek to leave the country (maybe even some moderate muslims) and then the competitiveness of the country in the international arena (sports, industry, etc) would drop vastly and that would also mean reduction of foreign investments and maybe even some pullouts.

A great interview. If PAS comes to power 2 of the likely consequences, amongst others, are: i) Exodus of foreign capital. Only then Green Wave supporters would realize that religiosity not necessarily provide food on the table; it's economic productivity that does. ii) Either both, or at least one, East Malaysia state could exixt Malaysia. As they may feel that they didnt form Malaysia for a theocracy.

Thank you, Ms. Bridget for your candid and intellectual analysis and views on Malaysian politics, policies and social economy. Wish to mention that am an avid reader of your articles in Mkini. A united and stable Sarawak under the leadership of Premier Abang Johari Openg has been successful in “demanding” a bigger federal allocation to carry out various development programmes and projects. I won’t say the same for Sabah, though. I have to agree with you, despite being the infamous short tenured PM, Sabri in the 11 months enabled more reforms than Anwar in his one plus years. Thanks for Sabri agreeing to continue the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Transformation and Political Stability, namely the Anti-Hopping Bill was passed in Parliament. An end to the shameless political frogs. And Sabri also displayed his political maturity by dissolving the parliament and paving the way for GE15, instead of holding on to power. UMNO is history, for the exact reasons you mentioned. As for the young population, I totally agree with you, lacking of policies for a more sustainable livelihood. More has to be done.

Ever since they dropped the voting age down to 18 from 21, I have believed that PAS stands a very good chance of winning the right to govern. My conclusion is that, the young new voters, who happens to attend pondok, islamic schools have heen brainwashed by these schools. Already 4 states have fallen to the islamists. By next election, with more under 18's becoming more eligible to vote, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that more states will fall to PAS. The chance for PAS to win, on the backs of these 18 year olds, is good

I feel that Malaysians have grown more apathetic, harder to motivate, because of this feeling that everytime they are promised something, hope is destroyed. GE14 was a huge rush. Finally, the old sytem was going away!.. but what happened? PH1 failed in 2 years, leading to a level of leaderless confusion that was unprecedented. I believe GE15 did not clarify things. Are we going to have Najib be a prominent leader again? Bridget said it is taking a LONG time for the stain of 1MBD to recede. Has it receded? PH II HAS to perform. Has to govern. And stop being an Opposition. It HAS to restore faith in the governmental system.

there are only 2 paths currently available to break the shackle of backwardness of traditional civilisation for third world countries :- 1. to walk the trodden path of Developed country with greater efficiency and integrity in order to uphold, institutionalise, and prioritise objective mindset and its premise in their leadership and institution as the crux of becoming modern civilisation and economy. a path only leaders with objective mindset can pave or 2. to submit to an alternative path of gaining skin deep expedient modernisation and shortlived prosperity by becoming economic dependent and subservient to Developed countries which allow leaders that lack objective mindset and wisdom, who are enpowered and incentivised by Western elitist institution under the framework of elitist win-win market driven growth imperative and vicious geopolitics to prevail. a path that deliberately corrupt not only their leadership and institution but also denounce imperative of objective mindset and premise of foundation of modern civilisation and economy, at the expense of the masses . it doesnt matter who wins, Malaysia is already near the tipping point of no return to becoming a modern civilisation. they are false modern economy as of most SEA countries - incl all current Developing countries - whose leaders lack insight and understanding into the core premise of modern civilisation and its economic foundation.

Most riots are instigated by gov. Look at Mao’s Cultural Revolution, look at the recent Blue Bird movement in Taiwan, Ukraine Maidan etc; all of these incidents, although protray itself as the pro-change, pro-idealistic (in the sense of Mao’s China) positive force, is actually a way by which an state actor exerts its power, using mass mobilization or whatever it can to ask the people to rally behind (thus democracy) to support their cause, so that they can benefit from the chaos created Question should be asked is, whether how many chaos and how far does that state actor want to go to achieve his or her goal in politics. How many people need to die for nothing for him or her to get what he or she wants Also understanding society using the lens of Marxism also helps. Just picture the proletariats and bourgeoise having never-ending class struggle. The proletariats are poor but they are the majority, the bourgeoise are rich but they are the minority. Both of them can’t coexist and they are always fighting each other, everyday in their life.

Non malays have themselves to be blamed for the current situation They think that by weakening both UMNO and BN, the malays will switch their support towards malay-based parties within PH (PKR & PAN) Instead it is PAS that is reaping the rewards. who told you this is the case? My take is that PAS will not even win any state outside Kelantan and Trengganu come the next election. The non Malays have no love for UMNO or BN or PN or PAS but they are pragmatic. It is either partner with UMNO or be neglected and domm the country for certainty. Malaysia had been falling since the DAY TDM took over. PAS gained a lot of votes previously was not their popularity but the wave to bring down BN at all cost. My observation in next GE, there will still be no winners, though PN will have more parliement seats. Umno would loose more, probably half of what they have today. PH will still be the government but weaker, holding on to allies from borneo. that in it self is so fragile. But at state level, PH and UMNO can say goodbye to Perak, Pahang and Malacca. Only place remains to PH/UmNo is N9, Penang and Selangor. PAN would not be wiped out as long as they contest in majority non malay area like klang.

@@ChuanTeh PH/UMNO is in one coalition, so malay is only divided by PH/UMNO and PN (PAS/Bersatu). if its a 3 corner fight, then malay will split the votes 3 ways, but even then, from 2022 election data, in general, 65 malays voted PN. in a 1 to 1 fight, that percentage became 75% (overall, as some state like kedah scored 85% while selangor its 60% malay votes to PN). In a constituency where malays make up 62% of the voters, that place is already a lost to PH, except some outliers like shah alam or lembah pantai. in every election, malay voters increase 1%. so places like Taman Medan which used to be 55% malay, now become 65%. in 40 years time, even place like Bukit bintang and Puchong will be malay majority. @@awang57 as a Malay Terengganuan who have lived in Terengganu most of my life with several years of living in Egypt, Selangor and Sarawak, this state is crappy now. Terengganu was much better when we were under BN (but at that time my naive and gullible self was a PAS supporter). BN governments succeeded in turning our students the best SPM scorers in the country, education was centerstage! and for such a small population of just 1 million we were SUKMA champion for many consecutive years. Since PAS took over we don’t have any more development, at all! Only projects going on are from previous state government. Trust me this state is rotting and will soon be eclipsed by everyone else in Malaysia and our youths will migrate elsewhere for opportunities. I cringe at all these PAS supporters from outside Terengganu who praise Samsuri as if he’s doing a good job. He is not. He underperforms, he is not doing anything of substance for this state. He gets praises for being able to carry out “professional” demeanor but that alone doesn’t make him a good leader and feed the people. The only reason why I’m back in Terengganu is because I love the scenery and the beaches and I miss my family.

Welsh fails to mention that the CIA & US embassy were involved in regime change & toppling a duly elected president in the Maidan coup in Ukraine in 2014. This led to civil war in certain regions of Ukraine like the Donbass which rejected the proxy government installed by the US. Ukrainians who were ethnic Russians in Donbass were bombed & killed in tens of thousands b4 Russia even thought of intervening. Putin entered into the Minsk agreements hoping to avoid the conflict. However the Ukrainians failed to honour the terms of the agreement signed. NATO under US leadership then escalated tensions further by publicly stating that there could be NATO bases in Ukraine along Russia's borders housing ballistic missiles. When u keep provoking Russia esp regarding their national security, their responses towards Ukraine were justified & inevitable.

We have seen PAS as part of the coalition government during the COVID period. Honestly don't see any religious extremism. Hence why the need to be so afraid if PAS governs Malaysia. The Malaysian economy now is worse than before, without any comprehensive or any articulate justification when announcing a point. More of talking without substance and action. Media Freedom is at worst, what was said before by PH in reforms etc is just not reflecting on what the people see today.

@@azrilia1 In states governed by the Islamic party PAS, policies have been implemented based on "Islamic principles". I wont need to emphasize about it since PAS is an Islamic Party that only know and focus on the Islamic knowledge which everyone know that. it’s great to see that the Terengganu MB has a master's degree in aerospace engineering. However, I’m concerned about how inclusive PAS's policies will be. Malaysia is a diverse country, and it’s crucial that everyone feels included and represented. In the past, there have been instances where PAS's policies seemed to create division rather than unity. I would really like to know how PAS plans to address these issues and ensure that all communities feel valued. and so far I didnt see any. Economic stability and growth are very important to us. did PAS ever plans for the economy? How does the party plan to tackle unemployment, attract foreign investment, and make sure economic growth benefits everyone? PAS past performances just show they are good in Islamic knowledge but not good in governing the country as they cant settle the problem existed for decades in the states governed by them and this called poor governance ability. These mean PAS dont have the experience and effectiveness needed for national governance.

@@azrilia1 its good thing for PAS to have one master holder of airspace engineering. but how does that related to PAS governance ability? ppl vote PAS because of their islamic knowledge or because of their governance ability which super important for a country? govern a country need to be capable of governance. From PAS past performance untiI now in Kelantan taking as example, poorest state, highest sexual crime rate even though application of syariah law highest unemployment rate etc..what we all can see is that PAS do not have the ability to govern beside expert in islamic matter. I would like to know if PAS has any plan for economy, investment, unemployment rate, poverty and so on for the country? our country is diverse with multicultural many religions. PAS had implemented policies that affected and raised concern among non muslim community before. what and how PAS gonna do to ease non muslim community or they just dont care? PAS is an islamic party, which mean everything they will implemented based on Islamic law which will definitely affect non muslim lifestyle and freedom even though they said wont affect. ppl can compare with states under PAS and other party. PAS merely know and focus islamic knowledge and with this they not suitable to govern country. Analyze from diff perspective is really important.
