Well in a way I'd say so was the guy, after he took shower though. In a way the flaws a person has in their looks, thougfhmainly ones they can't really control can actually be more appealing than the generally considered attractiveness. In the same both have things that aren't generally appelaing. Boy has meh facial hair and wears glasses. Girl is chubby and freckles. Even though those things aren't iherntly bad in much of a way, I believe of part of it is despite the flaws the person continues on, they add varity. SInc you don't need a six pack you just need to be strong, you need perfectly groomed facial hair, you just need clean hair. Glasses are what you make of it. Freckles, I don't even like those thing are one cutests aspects of the skin, like Black people with ther varition of brown, they make the perosn a different kind beautiful. So flaws or things aren't actually flaws and more so just a different thing can be eandering because they're unique. I mean even for understandable things like the girls' chubbyness expressing a lack of care for personal health isn't that bad, like sure she defintly isn't keeping track of her calories however is isn't enough to be ashamed over or really ashamed that much, just work on it and be better because Healthyness gives more ability to control your actions. I personally are into chubbyness and its appeal its is warmness, that is kinda why isn't that bad, aslong you ain't obese or more accurately you can actually enjoy moving, there isn't a problem. Flaws or extra aspects out of the norm add varity that gives a character or a person a certain appeal, as not everything in the norm is good for a good reason. Still personally i feel the flaws should've been extended further with the character designs, like for girl she'd have a condition where some of her teeth are missing, boy's small blindness is enough actually, these are things that actually do affect the person and can be made to make them seem ugly. Well the teeth thing I understand actually, though it is merely an aspect. Flaws add varity basically and actually even if a perosn is actually ugly, who they are can make the uglyness be beautiful in a way despite, THey will be still ugly but it won't be the only thing they're.

Couple observations here: first off, I really like how it's clear that the girl would still be perfectly fine with dating him because she clearly enjoyed (what she saw of) his personality rather than his looks. Secondly, it's interesting all of the foreshadowing for the REAL reason this guy can't get a date: He gets angry at everyone being in love instead of looking for someone himself, he edits a 6-pack onto a picture of his BFM-sona, he forgot their anniversary even though it was clearly important to his girlfriend, who he'd been dating for long enough that she HAD THE KEYS TO HIS HOUSE. Overall, I hope this girl doesn't spend too long crying over this guy, because he is TERRIBLY shallow.

I like the messages and metaphors that this short has. Both parties weren't entirely truthful in their appearance, but the difference between them is that one learns to accept both of them for who they are and the other doesn’t whatsoever, and becomes a hypocrite. Ironically enough his “true self” didn’t come out when his hoodie was taken off, but when the girl was, showing itself to be far uglier than any physical trait. EDIT: You can even see that he doesn't accept even his "perfect" self when he is shown photoshopping abs onto it when the girl was visiting. It shows he directly values appearance/vanity over everything else, compared to the girl who probably only did it to have people treat her better as a person, as seen when she doesn't devalue the guy for his true appearance.

@@o340 Valid interpretation. I was looking at it in a more "literal" sense, where the sweater physically changes you into something you wish to be but ultimately aren't. Though on second thought the changes caused by the sweater are minimal at best, especially for the girl. They could probably look like that with exercise and makeup, something available to everyone. I am now leaning more on your side, I thought it was "wrong" because the sweater fundamentally changes you into something you aren't, but it isn't like they are really "lying" on anything too serious, like for example past relationships, their biological sex, etc. I do see the point you have. It isn't necessarily looking "better" that is the problem, it is the heavy emphasis on how those looks don't directly value a person. Someone who is conventionally attractive shouldn't get better treatment than someone conventionally unattractive. The only thing I would say I have an opposing opinion on in regards to the story/message is that the boy accepts his appearance as well as others without the clothes. The boy demonstrates that he doesn't accept anything except what other people look like with sweaters. Even with the sweater he has, he still wants more (as seen when he is shown photoshopping abs onto his sweater-changed self). With others, sure he is nice with the girl when she has the sweater, but as soon as she takes it off he sees her as lower in importance when compared to her "perfect" self. In other words, he is flattered when she accepts him at first, but as soon as she reveals herself to be less attractive, he values her flattery a lot less. EDIT: I changed the comment to reflect this thanks for the insight.

We can't see all the flaws the person would have in the real world due to limitations of the art form. He wanted a girlfriend for the novelty of having a pretty girlfriend, like a status symbol or something. When it's revealed that the girlfriend isn't super hot, we see that double standard come out. It's very funny, because the guy probably thought no girl wanted to date him because they're all shallow and only want hot guys, only for him to immediately dump his girlfriend the moment she is no longer pretty 😂 Honestly? Really good reflection of that weird manosphere culture with incels and such.

Yeah I used to hang out with nerdy boy's and because I was considered attractive they would literally talked s*** about other women in front of me and say thank God you don't look like that . The friendships didn't last long . Only one out of the four of them was traditionally hot . But even the traditionally good-looking one should have kept his mouth shut because it was rude . They would go on about how ugly one of their friends wife's was . They would say they can't believe their friend married such an ugly woman . Meanwhile the friend was morbidly obese with acne balding and overall just not traditionally good looking . They were both very very happy and I don't know why they had to hate on her looks . They should have been happy there friend was happy instead of talking smack about how the wife looked .

First impressions do matter, and you are unlikely to find somebody if you are a man at the bottom of the social hierarchy. True message of the cartoon wasn't "le men hypocrites", it was acceptance of the fact that we all have our ugly sides inside, and the guy was too shallow and immature to comprehend that and love his not-so-perfect girlfriend.

But you lose sight of other important things when that’s all you care about. After the guy finds out about how the girl really looks, despite the fact he hid his true self as well, he *rudely* kicked her out. Not even respectfully, *rudely* (Also the girl is very pretty, but to the guy she wasn’t pretty enough) This is also my interpretation, who knows why the guy wanted a partner. I’ll admit that the ending really soured me on the project at first, but on some reflection this is one of the best student films I’ve ever seen. The commentary on the gender double standard is really poignant and honestly set up flawlessly. I’m a guy, so I can’t pretend to know how it feels to be in this position, but getting the viewer invested with this cute love story and a cuter twist before tearing their heart out at the end with the protagonist revealing their true colours reads, to me at least, like a way to convey how broken and crushed someone in the girl’s position would feel. I’ve had a lot of fun reading through the comments and seeing who missed the point - because the beauty is, even if you miss the commentary, if you had an overtly negative response to the ending at all, you did (in a way) get the point of the short. You found a way to convey a feeling previously only fully understood by a certain group of people to everybody, and even the guys in the comments who really didn’t get it still at least got to feel what it’s like, even if it’s just a small fraction of the real thing. Genius artistry, so much fun to analyze. Subbed and can’t wait to see what you do next :)
@jamesmcdonnell2455

Nobody missed the stupid point. We all know the nonexistent double-standard that the video wants to pretend exists. Also, pretty weird of you to say you're incapable of understanding anyone else's viewpoint if it doesn't 100% line up with yours. But hey, you think there's never in the history of humanity, been even a single case of a woman leaving a man "broken and crushed". So I guess we shouldn't expect much from you.

And what about how crushed the guy is? Seeing he was duped? I don't care what reality you think we live in, girls reject way more guys. She wasn't even ugly, but if he had asked her out *initially* before they spent all that time together, he'd probably have been turned away. "I'm a guy so I can't pretend to know how it feels" so you've never been rejected? Never gone on a date that turned out to be a catfish? Your attempt at analysis can blow me.
@nate3285
@nate3285 Жыл бұрын
@@jackiechan1930 How can you complain about the guy getting “duped”, when he was doing the exact same thing as she was? Even if we look past his shallow reasons for rejecting her, he still immediately called her a bitch and threw her out- compared to her acceptance at a literally identical scenario. The point of the film is to illustrate this double standard; of the guy’s desire for an attractive partner, and his total lack of care, or even basic respect towards, the person (literally) underneath that. I would recommend looking back at the film again and seeing how few displays of affection come from his side compared to hers. He wasn’t crushed about losing a partner, he was crushed about losing a status symbol- and I don’t think it’s reasonable to feel sorry for someone with such selfish motives.
@jackiechan1930
@jackiechan1930 Жыл бұрын
@@nate3285What's wrong with wanting an attractive partner? You could say his reaction was unreasonable, and callous. But just because she accepted him for who he is, why should he? Are his reasons so shallow? You ever see a beautiful woman, with an ugly man? I'm sure you have, and you'd be forgiven for thinking "lucky" or the girl equivalent: "What does she see in him." You seldom see the opposite, not because all men are inherently shallow, but men and women admire different things. I've met girls who have rejected guys because their name next to theirs sounds funny, or they don't think they'd have cute kids with them, or more often, because they don't see any drive or ambition to be successful--however they define success. (Commonly seen as money/status). When you approach someone to ask out, you don't do it for their award winning personality--thats why you stay--you approach them because, they look good. If you are not attracted, you don't ask or approach. These things have been this way since the dawn of time, and no quirky animation coming out of SoCal or Gender Studies rhetoric is going to change that. Women are an object of beauty, men, and object of status. You are considered fortunate, when you a partner who doesn't care or at least doesn't nitpick. But those are exceptions to the rule, and I don't think calling most people shallow is accurate. It's nature. These films along with other works seek to try and disparage men, some are on the nose, others are subtle. But comparatively, nobody is pointing out (let's use popular references) how 6 feet or 6 figures is a disparaging attitude, it's "not settling for less than you deserve" and "you go girl." Why is he the villain for wanting more, especially since the film demonstrates the rising standards all around him. Except nobody makes fun of a hot girl dating an ugly guy, but the reverse definitely happens.
@sparkstudies1675
@sparkstudies1675 Жыл бұрын
@@jackiechan1930Girls do get made fun of for dating ugly guys, but honestly regarding your entire comment, I feel like it should suffice for you to know that yes, the double standards occur either way. I think it's actually more often talked about the shallow reasons women dump men for, I hardly ever see something like this where it ends up being the girl who gets rejected. Everybody already knows it happens to men all the time. You guys are very vocal about it. I don't think anything is wrong with having standards for either, and I believe that men should have them as well, whatever they are. But the point is regardless of your gender, don't define an entire person by these shallow standards. Learn to love for the soul.

It's pretty easy to look at a collection of circles and lines (how every character in the animation are drawn) and think that the character is physically attractive without knowing how that person was intended to look if they were in real life people... so I don't think "how they look" is something worth discussing. It's all just projection. It's a sad ending because they were okay together and she was accepting of him but he wasn't. She "dodged a bullet", sure, but that doesn't make the moment any more joyful; to be rejected for who you are by someone you were interested in. It's only a happy ending if she ends up being happy... and her story doesn't go that far for us to know.

Gosh I'm so sorry to the creator since people on Twitter shared a sped up version and completely seem to miss the point of the story 😭 this is very well done and I think the ending not being like 'oh he accepts her too' makes os much sense. Keep up your good work!

I learned from this video from the version shared on Twitter, so I wouldn't consider it that bad. It's people choice to stay on Twitter or look for the original source.

I love the overall message and animation, but its also overly simplistic. The girl is painted as a victim, when she, like the boy, knew that she was taking a risk hiding behind a mask. She was being dishonest and shallow, too. Both she and the boy are desperate people participating in this toxic culture. I understand the guy was a bitter incel and a jerk, but why would she want to be with guys who don’t find her physically attractive in the first place? Doesn’t she want a boyfriend to find her naturally attractive? Why would she settle for less than what she deserves in a relationship? I guess that’s my hang up.
