Today me and mum head back down to the breach of the Bridgewater canal! To see if anything is going on today. When we get to the cofferdams through they were, leaking heavily. But how full is the canal on the Manchester side now? Dad also prepares the boat for the start of blacking tomorrow.

3:00 From a certain perspective, it's actually very lucky that you guys particularly happened to be the ones to get stuck there. You brought the equipment, skills, and existing network to produce really high quality first person coverage of this whole story. If you hadn't been among the unlucky ones who got stuck, I don't think we would have gotten this kind of coverage. It looks as if that flooded field next to the river could easily be drained off into the river if someone dug a drainage channel out from the flooded part leading down into the river. Thanks for your upload, I always look forward to your latest news now!

Then watch the environment agency jump up and down throwing fines around all over the place; meanwhile water companies and such, somehow get away wantonly dumping sewage and dodgy stuff into rivers, due to 'lack of investment', aka 'far too busy paying out dividends'.

I was thinking the same, but noticed that it looks like the river bank has collapsed in one of the more recent drone shots. Maybe they don't want to risk machinery near the river banks to cut a drainage ditch

They'll need to install a culvert first before attempting to build anything like new banks on that ground. That water will be destablizing the ground under the canal right-of-way too much to build on. I imagine that's the plan, and they won't invest anything anything else until they're ready to do it. Although the alternative (more expensive) is to bring in fill and raise the flooded ground so it properly drains to the creek. It's entirely possible (as Josh has mentioned) that the old culvert collapsing cause this breach in the first place. It would be ideal to not need to have a culvert at all there.

Great drone footage and editing, of a day where weekend 4 off and siphoning towards full on the other side to your breach day mooring means the blacking in dry dock was the Dad skill operation make the second half edit out of.

It's pretty clear from the view from your drone, that the leak in the cofferdam isn't too serious. It must be quite weird looking back at what happened, now. And it was such a random thing to have become caught up in the drama of it. But it was a fairly unique experience and brought a lot of camaraderie in all of your troubles. Your dad's been working like a Trojan, and glad to see him with his mask on. That's much safer. All set now for the blacking!

Instead of washing-up liquid, what they should have recommended is "sugar soap" which would have cut through the debris & greasy residue left from sanding off the blacking, too late now though, but you might wish to remember for the next time. Well done to your Dad for stripping the old blacking off properly, a lot of lazy people think it can just be pressure washed and it's good to go. You just seen for yourself, after your Dad has used a rotary wire wheel brush, then you went round it with a brush and soapy water, what remains, your boat is being prepared the proper way and your blacking will be much more effective after it.

Hi guys i have tried to get this over to people because i have been in the building trade for 50 years. But when you have cleaned down put 2 coats of shellac knotting prior to blacking its so cheap but water inside or outside will not penetrate it and its cheap! Bitumen is just a by product of coal but when it deteriorates your hull will still be protected. Simple but these companys dont tell you this cos its business for them and you come back every 4 years????

We have used bitumen the last 2 times and in 4 years this is the third time of blacking but decided to do 2 pack epoxy this time then we won't need to take Olive out for 4 years

Probably find the water in the canal is seeping through the silt base and going under the coffer dams. As it wasnt dredged before they were put in so the silt between the dam base and the canal clay base is porous.

Sacrificial corrosion. If you connect a more reactive metal to a less reactive metal, the more reactive one corrodes instead of the less reactive one. So you attach anodes made of metal that is more reactive than the hull0 and you just replace them when they corrode away.

Your dad will be plagued by those pieces of wire that fly off the wire wheel, they get in your clothes and then your washing, months later they randomly start stabbing you, like what happened to me in Asda, I was walking around getting stabbed in my butt cheek by a piece, had to go to the toilet to find the bugger, my missus was crying with laughter 😂😂😂

Those Rock Shox rear shocks start at around $400 Canadian so probably a couple hundred British Pounds and go up from there depending on the model. I just ended replacing the seals in mine after I damaged it with an air compressor. They sell full service kits for well under $100

I think the fence at the breach serves another purpose; it looks like its defining the farm property lines so any repair will not encroach on the farm.

Did they put a glob of Axle-Grease in the Cup-Bearing under the Rudder-Pintle ; that might both make the Tiller easier to move while the fittings are new, and reduce the wear-rate - at least until the Water-flow can dig the Grease out of the slight Clearance-fit...? Why don't you black the baseplate? I get that friction from cruising might remove the rust like you said but it's still losing metal to oxidation. Or does the baseplate not rush for some other reason?

Because Olive is cruising all the time you don't need to paint underneath and it would be all scrapped off anyway. It's different if you stay in one place. Also as you can there isn't room for even me to get under her let alone Andy or Josh

The inner cofferdam on the Taylor side is doing all the work. The outer was always pretty useless. The sooner the better the earth dam is installed, before the next storm certainly arrives. Get Olive done and get out of The Bridgwater, pronto.

​@xtr1092 we done up only a 42ft and went through bloody loads of them and took back right down to the metal all the blacking above the waterline and down underneath base plate sand blasting sorted the pitting treated the metal and 2 pack epoxy I mean hats off to Andy he works and is trying to get it done before he goes back to work, 3 years in and out the water so needs to be done right no cutting corners

I imagine that fence will delineate the farmer's field but my guess is it is for animals. Gives him the option of using that land for animals. Not much good for stopping humans who want to ignore it. They’ve replaced the fence as it’s the land owner’s property boundary. That got damaged due to the breach. So they have had to fix it as it’s the land owners property.

Hi Geoff. You don't need to black the bottom of Olive as it will be just scrapped off when cruising. We cruise all the time so it might be different if you stay in one place

Sacrificial, they rot instead of the steel hull. They can be easily replaced when used up.

She is 70 feet long but seems to look longer out of the water. And she was always called Olive. She was an ex black prince hire boat and they are all ladies name.

He's removing the old blacking. Narrowboats are made from mild steel which is reactive so would rust to dust in water if you don't protect it. Blacking is that protective waterproof layer. There are two common options: a bitumen (the same substance is used to make asphalt) paint, cheaper and easier to DIY but it wears off and deteriorates quite quickly so has to be reapplied every 2-3 years, and 2-pack epoxy which is more expensive and harder to DIY but it offers better protection and can last up to 10 years with maybe one touch-up.

*Lad, if that bike is a no-name brand. That the shocks won't hold air, nothing to do. BIke shop might be able to try new o-rings. Other than that. Proper name brand with Fox suspension of quality or other, is used about 500-1000. Could find a deal. Hire one for a day. You'll see the difference. Marketplace. Ask your friend about it.

Surely Peel are failing in their responsibilities stopping people going towards the breach by leaving the fencing just loose for people to move out of the way, they only need a couple of clamps on each of the fencing panels to lock them together.

Peel have there so easy to remove they can't be there 24/7 even crt do when there working on there canal but doesn't work god I've seen looks shut for a repair and people break into it you can only do what they can

It's good that you are now wearing a mask but please make sure it fits your nose The metal strip on the mask needs to be pushed down tight against your nose so no air can get through If the mask isn't a good fit you will still be breathing in dusty air Please look after yourself

Thanks Peter but everything Andy pulled the mask over his nose his glasses steamed up and he couldn't see anything and he needs his glasses to see what he is doing😊

I've had trouble with masks steaming up my glasses as well The metal strip on the mask needs to be pushed down tight around the nose for a really good seal By bending that metal to the shape of the nose it should stop the glasses steaming up I hope this helps

I don't know how your applying the 2 pack paint but if your spraying it wear a proper mask, ive painted lorry/trailer chassis with red oxide and silver paint 30 years ago without a mask, not full time just ocasionaly and not suffered any health issues, but in the early years of 2 pack paint spraying i know of a couple of local paint sprayers who have died a few years later from not wearing a spray mask, theres some nasty stuff in 2 pack paint,.
