Can’t believe this story was highlighted! I am related to the West family, who still own and operate a nursery here in town. The house Velma killed Eddie in is just down the street. We call it the Perry Murder Bungalow. Thanks for telling the story here! Also, Sheriff Rasmussen’s position is now held by my dad- Sheriff Leonbruno!

@Sheila Gravely True, but she clearly didn't care what people thought of her given her smoking and love of frequenting bars and dance clubs. It's interesting to see both women and men, for centuries, just don't learn and marry someone they don't know and become victims of their bad decisions. Hollywood, tv, music, all blamed today for these crimes, but nobody can explain the same behavior from the 1700 and 1800s. It's called fear, selfishness and greed.

There was a lot of social pressure for people to do that. There were also many reasons outside of love for why people would marry, such as securing financial stability which women could only do through marriage back then. If you looked at the context in which things happened in, it becomes harder to blame the individual so quickly.

Eddie had his Life Stolen, for being a nice Man, and a Good Husband!💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏 Why didn't she just walk away? I don't feel she actually "snapped". It appears she was fed up. I feel like maybe she actually didn't believe she killed him, she just snapped, hit him in just the right way in the brawl, and he fell down dead when she thought she'd just conked him enough to knock him out. Her relationship was doomed to fail. A homebird village salaryman and a swinging femme du monde just live on different worlds. I don't think she'd have had a happy wedding at all; when you so regularly dedicate your time to socialite lifestyle, 300 miles away of your house, you barely have any left to enliven your conjugal life. Hell, even if her husband was from Cleveland, he'd have grown eventually sick of being neglected in profit of night life entertainment.

Remember she said after hitting him, she changed her clothing, and burned the dress she was wearing. WHY! Did the red stains not match the party shoes? Being afraid to leave and unable to adjust to life on the outside because of institutionalization. She knew where she fit in and she had a purpose there. She was murdering hedonistic trash that only thought of herself. She decided to stay in prison because she was too old and sick to be the party girl anymore. She knew she was going to live in a small farm town. Did she think they spent all their time partying and blowing every dime they had. Had she grown up before she went to prison instead of after, she might have had a nice life and family. Her parents knew this, but she didn't care what they thought.

Right? I've been researching silent film stars for a project and they're all getting married after a week or so and then divorcing like it's not even a thing. At that time in Cali, it was the law that from filing to finalizing there was a year for the couple to make it work. So, many just hopped to Mexico and divorced. This is also ironic since Mexico, as it is now, was a Catholic nation and opposed to divorce. But...why marry so quickly just for all that heartache and waiting around to divorce? It's all so strange.

This story about Velma West killing her husband should have been avoided on all counts. First, of all they should have never married each other because they were as different as day and night. Eddie wanted a traditional wife but Velma was a "party" girl, period! It's interesting that when she could have gotten paroled she chose not to take it. Enjoyed this storyline.

I'm from Cleveland, and I know this crime very well. The bridge party was actually in Parma, a suburb of Cleveland. There is speculation that Velma only became engaged to William (who was heartbroken) and Eddie to cover the fact that she was lesbian. She preferred pants and short hair, and apparently made overtures to Mabel Young - who only saw Velma as a platonic friend. The matron of the Marysville prison had notes that she disapproved of the way Velma dressed and carried herself. There are many pictures of her during this time and she definitely looks more masculine.

Find out what goals you and your prospective partner have for the future. Discuss them before you say I do, and if they're incompatible and compromise won't work, DON'T GET MARRIED. It sounds like she and her husband loved each other but were NOT at all compatible, from the start. Don't go into a marriage expecting to change someone!

How does someone just "casually" walk out of prison? It makes it look like the guards probably saw them leave, but couldn't be bothered to stop them.

🤔.. I don't know why. I kinda felt for Velma..But, she had no business getting married to Eddie. She was engaged before him to a man that had a business in the city. She could have married him worked with him in the Restaurant. And, party at night. Its funny how most think now. Getting married at 21 is just to young. And, back then it was excepted. If Eddie was well off he still would have been killed. She loved the night life. More than him. 👍🏻..Good one😷

I just discovered your channel and am most impressed. I live midway between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio; so, this case is of great interest. My Grandmother was a nurse and actually worked with Sam Sheppard for a brief time. She believed him innocent of his wife's murder to her last breath. The 1920s and 1930s were wild times in Cleveland, with so many homicides that famous lawmen, like Elliott Ness, were brought in to head the police department. Only the infamy of bloody Chicago over shadowed the crime in that city.

Thankyou so much for your comment, my mum used to live in Canton, Ohio so when I started researching cases from the USA I was surprised at how many were from Ohio but that may be because the state was very good at recording everything :)

@@BriefCaseOfficial Canton is my second home! I served as Grand Master of Cryptic Masons a few years back, and spent a lot of time with the guys from Canton. In the 1990s, I followed their Minor League Baseball team and frequented their dart shops. You are correct about the documentation. The state has been a breeding ground for journalists since the mid 1800s. Because of the geography of Ohio, it has become both an agricultural and industrial hub of the U.S., attracting all kinds of people. John Brown, a major nut in our nation's history, was an officer in my Lodge. From the brilliant to the kooks, we have it all.

Thankyou that is so Interesting, When I was younger I drove from Denver to Toronto and we passed Cleveland, I wanted to stop but we were on a time limit so didn't :( I was intrigued as to why so many 19th and early 20th crimes were from there and now understand that it is the 7th biggest State in the USA in population and always been very good and documenting its history :)
