Hez had been goading Israel since the 1970s, and Israel's had to invade southern Lebanon repeatedly - 1978, 1982, 1990, and the last one in 2006, when Hez thought they were strong enough to take on Israel. Israel lost 1 IDF soldier for every 200 Lebanese, and the IDF carved a swath through southern Lebanon, forcing Hezbollah into a small, remaining section of Lebanon, where Hez hid, humiliatingly, like rats, until they begged the U.N. to save them from the IDF. Israel backed off after making their point. Israel's ROE was justified and sought to harm no Lebanese who weren't affiliated with Hesbollah. Iran is doing it again - using the population of southern Lebanon as pawns in their game. If the USA are willing to draw blood in an election season, this might be their chance to finally reach out and 'touch' the religious leadership in Iran. Iran used to be quite modern, and its people focus on education & ultimately are liberal. But religion, again, brings humanity to these depths. Maybe a few ayatollahs could be 'spiritually re-assigned', and someone more progressive could open some economic prosperity.
