The assembly of the lawn mower could be done without any problems kzbin.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend I just puzzled something about the red strange “key”. However, it quickly turned out that this creates a kind of contact bridge between battery packs and lawn mowers. An additional backup as a father of a 1 year old nephew is great!! :-)

They show how to make this adjustment in the briggs service manual. It's how you adjust the RPM. It's no secret. In fact I think they even make a tool to make it easier to get in there to bend the tang the spring is on instead of using pliers.
@Tmansgokarts10 жыл бұрын
isn't it strange that a simple bend in a spring or mount can just totally change the performance of these engines.
@Fearlessfront10 жыл бұрын
yea, took me a while to figure out exactly what to bend! haha
@9102jack10 жыл бұрын
in most cases it brings them back to the right speed! springs stretch after years of hot/cold and numerous extensions and vibrations so it makes sense to bend it out after a couple thousand hours to give it the 3,600rpm it needs. We see too many mowers/tractors coming into the shop that are running around 3,000 or even as low as 2,700. Once we bring them back up customers respond saying it "mows like new" and "has the power/speed it was always supposed to have".

Good video. You showed how to adjust governed speed properly. Bend tab opposite way to reduce speed. Use a digital tach as you suggested to keep RPM in the safe range. Had a flywheel disintegrate and it came right through the engine shroud and flew all over the shop. It was metal fatigue, I started it up after a carb clean. Was making adjustments, no overspeed, and she went. Yes, dangerous, be careful. Thanks for the video’s.

not hating, just some suggestions and notes. 1. before doing ANY work adjusting the governor, it is best to get the engine in the proper configuration. If you skip these steps in setup then any adjustments you make in the governor will be masking and potentially causing more problems that you are trying to solve/ a. install the damned exhaust/muffler. Yes, that small amount of back pressure is necessary as these engines are designed for backpressure from exhaust. this is important for proper tuning. b. make sure your timing, coil and sparkplug are working correctly. c. setting the proper valve clearance and even cleaning the head cylinder and valve lapping is important...all of these things will give you best performance and help make the engine work more efficiently and it will last much longer. d. change the oil e. clean off the engine head cylinder...especially the aluminum cooling fins. f. change the oil. and filter g. make sure the fuel filter and fuel pump are not blocked and are working correctly. h. clean the carb with attention to the air needle valve and the main jet with emulsion tube holes cleared and cleaned. i. make sure and test to make sure you don't have any air leaks in the air intake manifold. change gaskets if you do and solve that. A lean condition engine is going to prematurely fail over time. j. clean the air filter..oil it is that is what is required...some require a slight oil..some do not. k. make sure your gas is not contaminated and flows freely from tank outlet into fuel line. make sure there is no water. l. Check and make sure your fuel cap vent is working...loosen it and if engine performance improves, then you know the vent is not working...fix that. 2. now check your engine performance. In almost every single situation if you have done all of the above preventative maintenance things above, this is going to give you the performance increases. And this means you don't mess with the governor! it's just that simple. 3. there are only four reasons to mess with the governor: a. you messed with it and now you need to get it back correctly. Look for other videos on how to PROPERLY adjust the governor. It's different from B&S compared to kohler compared to kawasaki. Refer to the service manual for specifics. b. your governor is broken or missing a spring. If the governor does not work, then it's probably broken internally. prepare to learn how to do complicated and time consuming repairs to your mower or just take it to a small engine shop. If the spring is missing, find the part and replace it. c. you are building a racing mower or racing engine and you just don't care that it will blow up and not last very long. You just want to go fast for maybe 50 hours before the engine blows up. Good luck and be safe. d. you don't know what you are doing and you found a video that sounded interesting and so without thinking you decide you want extra power from your lawn mower that was never designed to produce that kind of power. Good luck...may the safety gods looks favorably on your condition God Bless America

i did this to my drag racing mower and it runs better than it ever did. Thanks and great video. I turned it up slightly and it does what it should.
@therainbowboxer10 жыл бұрын
Honestly with a flywheel that is in good shape, you won't be able to scatter it by merely bypassing or adjusting the governor. Valve float will limit the top RPM below that level. If you start messing with stiffer valve springs, and other mods that defeat valve float, then you better think shields and billet flywheels and stuff. A much more important warning is this - Don't ever use a flywheel that has been modified, pryed on, dropped, or otherwise damaged as they can scatter / explode even at normal engine speed.

@thejuul87184 жыл бұрын
The most dangerous thing about governor modification is free spinning the engine in neutral. If the engine is under load then the internals will be biased and eliminate most irregularities like slop, and damaging harmonic resonations. Problem with tractors is their low gearing which allows their engine to spool up with very little load. People don’t realize how much power/torque larger displacement engines really make. Over sizing your pulleys can be a safer alternative for the engine.

Excellent video, you told me not to do it, of course I did it. Just pulled the tab a tiny bit, blew the motor in 5 seconds. Had nothing to loose, the engine was tired and I needed more RPM's. I have a replacement motor. You have a new subscriber, thanks Todd.
@walkertongdee9 жыл бұрын
Yes this adjustment is OK because you use a tach, I use the tiny tach its digital. Tach monitoring is essential and I recommend reading the engines power curve and setting it to that rpm. where the engine puts out the most power. Many governor are set wrong as the spring gets old or sits in the hole wrong angle as you show. I have used a 13hp. engine on a hovercraft and needed a bit more rpm. to get the prop spinning at an optimum rpm. I went to about 3800 on an engine that had the power curve rpm at 3400.

@WeldstarCreations10 жыл бұрын
Fearless, you have probably saved people from a trashed engine and possible injury by posting this video. I can see knuckle heads removing the spring or governor arm entirely and not realize the danger they are placing the engine in and very possibly themselves. 4000 rpm is conservative. Valve float ( the valves actually begin to bounce due to insufficient valve spring pressure) starts around 4200 rpm on most all Briggs OHV engines according to racing mower engine builders. When this happens, engine power diminishes with increasing rpm and it is a good way to burn the exhaust valve(s). I commend you for giving your you tube viewers an explicit, detailed warning.
@Fearlessfront10 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy! I thought I was over-doing it at the time. But I get a lot of people that just use foot throttles to bypass everything, and don't understand how they threw a rod. At least this way your still somewhat "limited"
@WeldstarCreations10 жыл бұрын
I agree with StarPuss. If you want to go more than 4000 rpm, get a billet aluminum flywheel and do the proper mods: 4200 rpm and up: valve train (depends on maximum rpm) 5000 rpm and up: billet aluminum connecting rod.

I did this same mod on one of my customers riding mower. If you pull the motor off the chasey, retorque the case bolts or locktight them because they will come loose due to extra vibration in about 1 or 2 years. You can imagine how I know this. Plus if you go too high the engine will fight the spring and govener by pulse reving at the high rpm. Definetly a good howto video. I tweek mine all the time, and on my A.P.U. I made that one from scratch. I even know how to modify a govener where you get rid of that spring you were adjusting altogether and you would have the best of both and the worst of both worlds and I would definetly not recommend doing my mod unless it was absolutally nessasary.

It's best you shown how to do it this way so some people don't run directly off the throttle butterfly, that's when something will let go. If you wan't to run straight off the butterfly, it's best to at least get a racing flywheel and con-rod. I'm not going to say, not to do it because I did it when I was a kid but I ended up throwing a rod and a piece went right through the side of the barn. I was lucky I wasn't standing in that spot at the time plus it's not good to hold it full rev when not under load and that is what I did wrong. Good vid Fearless!

Fearless Front. Tsk tsk tsk tsk.... When I was younger, I had a 16 hp ohv lawn tractor and I never messed with the engine. (Never knew much about governors, now I do) I just cut grass with it and had fun driving around on it. Today, if I had that tractor still, yes I would be always happy to adjust it. But in my case, bypass it completely. I did it on a 300 dollar mini bike from Sears that only went 23 mph. (It had a centrifugal governor) so I bypassed the governor and got a BIG increase in top end speed. (About 15-20 +/- mph) Power went up from 2.5 to about 3-4 hp. Rpms increased from 3600 to over 4000 rpm. The fate of the motor was: it overheated I think so many times and I think the bearings or something small got heat stressed a lot, but the motor lasted with the governor bypassed about a year +/-. It really is a fast ride. You should be riding that mini bike right now... :)

Nicely done. Boy... You really gotta CYA with the disclaimers, eh? Wow. Anyways- FWIW, I run my mower engines at about 4000. I run my kart engines higher. That is a very safe and reasonable speed. Keep up the good work.

I'd do that with the Carburetor Idle Screw, but if I can find the Full Throttle RPM, I can adjust the Governor Spring tension as necessary. I searched your videos for an air/fuel adjustment procedure, but didn't find one. If you have one or could make one for this same Tractor Mower or one like it, I would greatly appreciate a link to an existing one, if you have one, or a new video. Hey man, just started my first mower. I got a Huskee Limited edition 20HP briggs and straton amd the keyway on the shaft is different than most. Instead of the keyway being cur into the pulley there is a groove cut into the shaft. If you would like I can make a video showing what it looks like

Rinoa, I know what your saying. However no one can do jack to fearless for showing anything. Knowledge is freedom. And I really like this guy. He has a poor mans shop and his place of joy. I dobt own a shop. Wish I could. However I do work out of my garage instead of parking cars in it. Can only do hot work out in the driveway as to not burn my damn house down lol. I love all your videos Fearlessfront. My channel has a mix of things. Latest project is my 1965 chevy C10. Check it out bro

This is a lot safer than the old tying a string to the governor trick!
