If the spring is weak or stretched, just bend that tab its attached to away from the other end and it should compensate for it.

I have a 21HP B & S motor in my John Deere LA125 lawn tractor. The engine died a few weeks ago, and I've been replacing Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Vacuum Fuel Pump, and just bought a new carburetor... Going thru some videos, I came across several videos on how to R & R the carburetor. I heard mention of a "Governor Spring" and recalled finding a broken spring laying on my mower deck when I first started working on solving why my motor would crank, but would NOT run on it's own. It would run for short bursts if/when I squirted starting fluid in the Carb's venturi. So now I'm stuck... is it just the spring that broke? Or is the Carburetor not working? The broken spring I found on my deck is 1/2" wide, the Coiled part of spring approx 1 3/8", and overall length is 2.5"... Since this is the 1st comment, I don't expect any feedback... So I'll copy this to another video. 11 Aug 2018

Personally on mine the governor failed and that caused the piston arm to break apart and destroy the inside of the engine, it had to eb taken apart and completely rebuilt. Your governor may have failed completely. I had the same problem and replaced the same parts, except I also replaced the magneto/coil. It then started properly but did not run for long because of the damage to the inside of the engine
