You perfectly put into words the problem with Will Smith’s performance. It’s so shocking when he’s a huge dick in the cruiser and then again when the chief says no one else will ride with him because of how he plays this character so charmingly. It’s like what happened to Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro and plenty of other once great actors, after a storied career all their performances have melded together into these homogenous approximations of characters that roughly fit the mold of any Hollywood protagonist they’ll be cast as. Almost by design, these washed up actors get themselves into this position where they don’t have to think about or put effort into their job anymore by just throwing all their past work into a blender and vomiting it up on screen in a sad attempt to remind audiences of what they were once capable of.

Agreed. An amazing world, given an "eh" story. Will Smith just plays Will Smith and it's so boring to watch him anymore. He's not a bad actor, but his characters are all identical these days. Evil elf cult was the worst part, though. It could have been better and more without all of that.

If you are looking for a good fantasy cop story. Can I recommend the Rivers of London book series. It's written by an old doctor who writer, with every book focuses on an actual mystery and follows the rules set by UK police and the limitations of magic. With characters who are very human and a good amount of depth.

I hear people saying that it was in an interesting world, but the world didn’t hold up to any scrutiny. The idea of that world was incredible, but the writers made it play out in the least innovative and safest way possible - the world is exactly the same as ours, never having been changed in the slightest by the fact that magic is real, orcs are real and elves are real. It felt like the week before the movie started an elf town and and orc town had fallen from the sky, and everyone was pretending nothing happened.
@Bman8466 жыл бұрын

Rhine I live in East LA and have lived in south as well, end of watch is massively exaggerated. Gunfights are not carried out throughout a neighborhood in real life. If the cops find these punks they are fucked. Just the other day on the helicopter loudspeakers they were telling some dude down my street to come out or they were going to go in with swat. Said the dudes name and blocked off the street at both sides.

It seems like most of his complaints about Bright stem from him assuming it was trying to be something that it wasn't. Suicide Squad, on the other hand, was studio garbage that only exists because Margot Robbie wants to pretend she's not working in pornography.

Listen man, I get that this movie isn't Emmy-deserving shit dude. But at the same time, its not supposed to be, the movie in itself makes fun of all the ideals that you ragged on it for having. A sexualized pixie girl?? HOW?? She had on coveralls and a long sleeve shirt, not only that but she was constantly shown killing people to defend herself. Not only this, but you say: "Don't give me that shit, that she was drained after reviving Jakoby from the dead, just don't give me that shit, after we've seen her use the wand to kill many people", OK, YES! She did kill many people during the night, which I would imagine would take a lot out on her energy (in this magical world), then she follows all of the running and fighting with A FUCKING RESURRECTION, and you don't think: "yeah maybe that'd tire a person out in this FICTIONAL MOVIE. And that's just Tikka! Oh my God Jakoby! "I really liked his character but I feel like he was given really dull and cheesy lines, but the actor really gave it his best for being under so much makeup", the whole point of his cheesy, teeth gritting lines was exactly what you pointed out earlier in that, HES A FISH OUT OF WATER, first Orc police officer in L.A and his partner hates his guts because he made one almost fatal mistake. His lines are awkward because HE'S awkward, that's the joke. Not only that but later in the movie it makes it funnier when he can make a quip back to Ward that was almost as funny as Ward's lines. It's IRONY. And Ward? Yes, I will agree it seems like a hollow character at some instances, like it's just Will Smith, but that being said I don't think that means there absolutely is NOT a character to Ward; one that makes him funny, slightly unapproachable, and wise. He's constantly mean to Jakoby because he has a daughter and a wife to come back to and support and that, in its entirety, is the whole reason he doesn't want Jakoby in his car, because it will make more flak for him. As for the "Killing hundreds of poor mexicans; way to go, GREAT POLICE WORK" What would you have liked them to do? In that scenario, any single cop in the US would say they'd pull their gun and run out of ammunition before letting someone with a weapon close to them. And it's not like it's all gun violence either, for fuck's sake the TASERED A DUDE TO GET HIM TO STOP FOLLOWING THEM, then they pepper-sprayed three dudes in the club that were trying to kill them, Jakoby CQC'd like 15 people in the whole movie and they were constantly trying to get away from action. I don't know what you wanted them to do in this situation because it seems like in this scenario, the played it flawlessly. As for the bad guys always knowing where they are, I could chock that all up to the neighborhoods all being connected by spotters and things like the sort (as you see in one of the scenes) but that is one of the only things I legitimately think was forced, that and Tikka speaking English with thirty minutes to spare in the movie, and the fact that the villain elf gets shot but magically gets back up with no reasoning. I just personally think you are being way too hard on this movie that doesn't even want to take itself seriously let alone be criticized by its lack of seriousness. I get wanting a movie to have every detail thought of, and played out/ executed perfectly, but i also get the movies like bright, who were self contained, fun movies to watch with no real hard core goal to achieve. THATS FUN SOMETIMES, SOMETIMES A MOVIE CAN HAVE NO GOAL. -Peace
@seanboland46715 жыл бұрын
"your show says nothing and it says that nothing badly" every show/movie or anything always has some message/purpose. A movie that's clearly an allegory to racism is gonna take itself seriously in 2019. It's not trying to not take itself seriously, it's trying to come off as relatable and easy to watch. But what ends up happening when you do that is you lose all nuance and it becomes a run of the mill action flick that we see 40 times a year. The fact that it has nothing to say doesn't mean you can't criticize it. If they weren't taking themselves seriously they would've tackled a problem that isn't such a hot potato at the moment.

I enjoyed Bright but I really think you hit the nail on the head with most of this. I think perhaps Bright would have been done better as a show a la The Wire. As a show they wouldn’t be able to cast Will Smith and we could have a less known actor who could have disappeared into the role better. The long con and possible multiple seasons would have allowed more a fully developed world, more fleshed out characters, and multiple plots, like the struggles of minority communities that you mentioned. Perhaps Bright 2 will learn from the failings of the first but probably not.

What would you say is wrong with it? I found 13 reasons to justify, even romanticizes suicide, and to the bone really showed how ED rips lives apart.
@boybutch6 жыл бұрын
I think the first part of to the bone was a good portrayal of eating disorders, I just found the lack of a recovery story to be unrealistic and focuses way too much on her behaviors in the eating disorders. For example, the pattern of her wrapping her fingers around her arm shows the views, "hey look, Ellen is self-conscious of her arms, so why aren't you?" My friend who struggled with an eating disorder said after watching to the bone, she starting doing the same thing. But I think the part that frustrates me the most is how they show a recovery from an eating disorder (or any mental illness) as having an epiphany, and then suddenly getting better, but that is not at all how it is. With any mental illness, an epiphany does not solve anything. Hard work, dedication, and the constant challenging of your negative thoughts is the harsh reality of mental illness, it is something you have to battle constantly. I think the movie would have raised more awareness of overcoming a mental illness or an eating disorder if they had spent more time developing the recovery, showing that "hey, if ellen can do this, so can you."

Swear it's like people don't get it... People place the social message in the movie in the wrong light. People completely miss concepts like living to stand above the perception of your race leaves you alone excluded from both your race and the others. Like that's a real thing I don't commonly see represented in media, cause it's kind of uncomfortable. People are focused on the movie needing to explore racism and poverty it misses the more realistic messages. I'm glad the movie didn't simply focus on racism between races, it's focusing on living with it, and how a lot of people aren't doing the right thing. leaving people in the cold because they hate cops, hate orcs, even if in both cases that concern is reasonably justified. You can't really call any of the prejudice displayed in the movie "wrong", but you can see how the behavior isn't helping. And sure maybe the plot is a bit generic but if it's setting up to be something bigger and greater I look forward to it. There's massive potential and I think it's ok the story started on a small scale. The way this movie tackled the race issue is a way I'd like to see it tackled more often, it has a better understanding of what's going on than I think most people do, as evidenced by the reviews.

Isiac DaGraca: I agree, I feel like we’ve gotten to a point where the majority of people shut off and tune out as soon as race is mentioned. It’s kinda sad
@TheNSJaws6 жыл бұрын
Isiac DaGraca This ^ The movie didn't need to explore racism in the all so predictable and preachy way that everyone, even in this comment section, wanted it explored. It actually went step above in maturity (One of the few things done excellently...), and showed that not every issue is addressable by the individuals or that there is always a time to address such issues. It shows a passive acceptance of a grimy situation. It is more realistic in its portrayal, and a bit more cynical. The plot leaves a lot to be desired, yes, but it was a fun watch, the action scenes were good (If you think otherwise, bite me, it's their 1st go at it.), certainly had inconsistencies there too (Marketplace positioning was a bit wonky with the car and everything.), but it's far from bad. Now to address the critique more: As far as 'already seen before', yeah, you'd have a point if there was anything new under the sun in like forever. Get off your high horse, if you don't like action movies and the common tropes they have, just spare yourself the pain of reviewing one, you obviously do not enjoy them or what they have to offer. In other words, relax nigga, it ain't that deep.
@TheNSJaws6 жыл бұрын
Nathan Bruce Because most of today's race issues are petty shit that wasn't racist to begin with, but was for some reason escalated to that point.
