Buying this camera in 2012 for me was an investment, as it is fullframe and it can be updated with custom software to look very good today. The only limitation is the lack of 4K, but for a 2008 machine it would be a bit too much to ask
@IliaSibiryakov5 жыл бұрын
Upscaled 3K from a 5D2 with magic lantern is still going to be better than a lot of cameras' internal 4K, as you must process the raw files on a computer yourself, with actual raw conversion software, while the other cameras will process the image internally at high speed, throwing away a lot of dynamic range and detail.

Ilia Sibiryakov since canon fullframes costs quite much i think ill get a 5d ii ... one question tho how long can you record with ml raw on your canon?
@IliaSibiryakov6 жыл бұрын
How long it can record depends on shooting mode... In normal 16:9 14 bit 24fps (full sensor, approximately 1080p) I can get almost continous recording, it stops at about 7 minutes, and using 12 bit allows it to record until the card is full (10 bit uses even less space on the card, but the quality is a bit worse in the shadows). With the resolution I used in this video - 2880x1080 (2.67:1 aspect ratio) I could record less than 10 seconds in 14 bit, so I used 12 bit which gave me about 12-16 seconds, and in 10 bit it records up to 27 seconds. Luckily with magic lantern you can adjust the aspect ratio and the resolution in 16 pixel increments, so you can always find a resolution that gives enough recording time for you. And there may be more magic lantern developments in the future, so it is possible the 5D2 will get lossless compression like the 5D3 has, that would allow recording for a lot longer, or even continously at resolutions it was not possible at before. One thing you should definitely get to shoot raw is a fast card, good ones are made by Lexar, Komputerbay and Sandisk, the speed should be 1000x or 1066x, and as many GB as you can get. I use a 128GB Komputerbay 1066x and a 32GB Lexar 1066x. The magic lantern forum is also a good place to ask questions, and here is a useful tool that predicts recording time for different cameras and resolutions: rawcalculator.netlify.com/calculator_desktop

Digic 4 cameras can shoot 12 and 10 bit just fine. I shot this at 12 bit: much longer recording time and no difference in quality. 10 bit reduces quality noticably.

Really appreciated your time and effort addressing my queries here. 5D2 probably arrived tomorrow will give it ago. Heard of sd oc but didn't know it would be that much faster lol. 6D1 lacks Av video mode but just realized that Av mode in 5D2 alters iso as well hence useless and have to go back to M mode. What's the best quality shooting in crop like yours or FF? I'm aiming FF 1920x800 60fps 2.39:1 Resolve image stabilizer upscaled to 4k60or25 2.39:1 on KZbin.
@IliaSibiryakov2 жыл бұрын
@@tobeywarwick2821 Yeah I only shoot in M mode, the other modes aren't good for video on this camera. In FF mode, both the 5D2 and 6D1 record in slightly-below 1080p resolution (something like 1856x1044), but it upscales without a problem. The best quality modes on both cameras are the 1:1 crop modes that record in higher resolution, like what I used in this video, but they must be used on a tripod to avoid rolling shutter, so FF mode is best for handheld. A 5D3 is the best option if you can get your hands on one.

In 2020 I'm torn between sony and lumix as a way going up to hybrid and have 10bit to 14bit environment mainly for client works and to finally retiring my trusty old 5dmkii. But I don't want to lose full frame look and the color science canon is giving me, your video makes me stay for good on canon system with magic lantern in it. Question: how big is the file size of a 10sec 2.5k or 3k clip? And what ML firmware version is used in this video? Thank you for the amazing work!
@IliaSibiryakov3 жыл бұрын
10 seconds of 3K video is almost a gigabyte. It's very time consuming to work with. And the dynamic range on Canon cameras is bad, so it's extremely easy to get noisy results. Plus the magic lantern software is hard to use. I honestly can't recommend this to anyone (unless you already have the camera). It is mostly suffering and pain. Sorry for the slow reply. I never had any breakage from magic lantern. And most of the time people who say magic lantern broke their camera, it actually broke for other reasons.
