Another great episode Tim! Thanks again for the firewood and the chance to operate that 2038R and grapple. I wanted to clarify for your viewers that while I did build this splitter at home, this is just my version of a mechanical type splitter that has been around for years and not my invention. There are various versions of these splitters available for sale online if someone wishes to purchase one. Thanks again and let me know if you need my help to run some of your tractors again!

Would it be faster to split a large amount then use the front bucket to scoop and load the pile? Only problem I would see is getting dirt in with it if not on concrete like in the video.
@digdrivediy3 жыл бұрын
@@SLCFarms Very true. I have done it a number of different ways, just depends on how big of a hurry I am in. If someone else is there to run a second machine it changes things too. We have used a rock bucket to pick up firewood and lets all the dirt fall out.

Back on the 1950s my grandfather built a spliter for his old Fordson Major steel wheel tractor . It was a wood structure that he mounted on the back & used the p-t-o to lift a steel block about 1’x1’ with a wedge welded to it , you rolled the round under it , then he had a trip that let it fall , one day a car driving down the road , pulled in his drive way & asked grandpa if he minded if he watched , no , - the next yr Massy Ferguson came out with the first commercial splitter

Cool I have thought about making a splitter somehow with my loader
@Slider683 жыл бұрын
That is a very cool "bucket"! One thing to keep in mind when it's comes to tractor hydraulic power is you can always trade between force and speed/distance by changing the mechanical and/or hydraulic geometry. For example let's say you have 2100 psi (lb/in²) of pressure. A hydraulic cylinder with a cross sectional area of 3 in² will get you 6300 lbs of force from the cylinder (I don't know the backhoe cylinder's area; I'm just guessing) Then when designing the backhoe splitter let's say you use a couple of mechanical linkages that cut the speed the splitter moves at to ½ of the cylinder's speed. You now double the force again, to 12,600 lbs. So the question isn't does Johnny have enough hydraulic power to split wood? The question is does Johnny have enough hydraulic power to split wood at a decent speed? I suspect it does...

Seems like a compact tractor would be able to do this pretty well. Maybe not a subcompact. Idk. Maybe some type of knurling on the rollers would help.
