I recently bought one of these 3-point harrows on the strength of this TTWT video. Seeing it in action gave me confidence that it was the right tool to revive my stone driveway that had become hard packed over the years. My driveway was much worse than Shawn's but this drag harrow loosened everything up and even raked up weeds at the same time. Initially, the stone looked dirty but, just as Tim said, a good rain shower will clean it up. I had the harrow mat at it's most aggressive setting but I didn't need to use any additional weight. That did limit my speed at first - the mat tended to bounce on the hard packed surface if I went too fast. However, once the stone started to come loose I increased speed. Some gentle weaves as I drove up and down the driveway stirred up the stone some more and got rid of the ridged lines too - which gave the driveway a neater look. From now on, I think maybe an hour each month will be enough to maintain my driveway and longer stone tracks I have going to the end of my property. I bought the 4' 9" x 5" version of this American Harrow. It seems really solid but it's still light enough to tip the frame on end for storage or it can be quickly disassembled. I thought I would need a couple of truckloads of new stone to revive my driveway. It's already looking good so this harrow has almost paid for itself. Thanks Tim and Shawn for showing.

Hey all, its Shawn "the neighbor". Thank you Tim, Christy, and American Harrow for restoring our driveway. After some good rain and bright sunny days, our driveway/parking area looks great! The dirt soaked down, and the rocks that were dug up & stirred around all look bright and white again! Great neighbors and great product!

I like the safety and convenience of that Harrow with its lift frame. Standard chain harrows pulled by a chain can be quite dangerous, although they look harmless enough, no blades whirring or PTO shaft spinning. Years ago a Dairy farmer neighbour & friend told me how his wife was very nearly injured or killed when chain harrowing. His wife asked him to hook up the chain harrows on one of their smaller ag tractors ( 2350jd) as it was a beautiful summer evening and she wanted to Harrow a pasture that had recently been grazed down. The drawbar extension was being used on another tractor so he hooked the clevis into the centre hole on the drawbar casting instead. When his wife turned at the end of the field, the chain caught on the tire and wound up, pulling the harrows with it. The chain harrows came right up on the tractor and pinned her to the steering wheel just as she got the clutch pedal depressed. This all happens very quickly, as you can imagine. My friend heard her screams and came running. It took quite awhile to extract her from the mess. She was badly bruised but ok. Another few feet of tire rotation would have crushed her. Even with the proper drawbar in place, you can turn quickly and have the chain hook the tire. I've experimented with this. A very long winded explanation of why that frame is such a good thing, aside from the convenience of the lift!

Driveways and arenas are great places to use a harrow. The next step may be a LR5060L landscape rake. It allows one to get more aggressive if needed but gently floats nice over material with position control 3 point similar to a harrow.

I can't see that this work was needed. However, the harrow seems a fine tool. I bet it would be great for ripping up and killing the inevitable weeds in this driveway. Good alternative to weedkiller. It reminds me of the harrow my father used decades ago in Florida to rough up his acreage in the fall for seeding winter rye.

Your video came at the right time. I need to run the harrows I have and level out my road. Deep ruts and never done this before. I will be running them behind my truck and use my snow blade lift system to raise and lower the harrows so I can turn around without running the harrows on the Grid road. A winch will lift them like a 3-point hitch. In my case I think a land plain would be better, but I have to use what I have for now. Thanks for the video...wish me luck...lol.

Morning Tim, I've been using an old set of spike harrows attached to the underside of my sleeve hitch grader blade. I've found that spring is the best time to do my gravel driveway, just after the frost is coming out and it's soft, it brings the stones up to the surface. I'm looking into getting about 20 tons of crushed asphalt put in, it will make it cleaner around the house than what gravel would be.

I noticed the center area of the driveway was darker indicating dirt. At our ranch we had a 2 mile road to get back to the house. With time the tire paths sunk and force the dirt to the center and sides so when graded there was no rock just dirt. Just a problem of putting a road over farm land without massive soil stabilization. You mentioned the land plane you also have the Ventrac but not sure you have a power rake. The harrow did a great job for his situation.
@shawnkeith465

That harrow would be nice to "dress up" our driveway, especially if I had a tractor. It would help to spread out some of the stones that get pushed to the side when driving on them and might even clear out the grass that is growing. I let the grass grow to help with the wash out problem we have, mentioned below. I have the opposite problem with our stone/gravel driveway. When we get a heavy rain we always get a wash out at the one spot, Of course, the driveway where the wash out occurs is on a slight hill/hump. It is even worse in the Winter when it snows and then get a little melting and then freezing. That spot Always ices up and we have a hard time getting up past that spot in the Winter. Even my uncle has a hard time clearing the snow with his Cubota BX series Tractor either with a snow thrower, front end loader, or with the plow. Even when he had an old 4x4 pick up with a plow on it, he had a hard time getting past that spot. Keep the informative videos coming!
