In this video, pro player Paul Drinkhall, shows off his brilliant blocking skills.
Blocking is great for returning your opponent's topspin shots, and turning defence into attack.
In the video, Paul shares his blocking tips, discussing technique, placement and gaining a psychological advantage over your opponent.
I also take Paul on in a match. I'm allowed to attack, but Paul is only allowed to block. Who will win?

It is great that you invited high level players like Paul Drinkhall. He is really one of the best players in the world. And just like how he plays the game, how he explains things is superb. :)

To be honest, and I hope you won't find it offensive, Drinkhall is my 4th favorite TT player (after Niwa, Boll and Waldner). His consistency and cold-blooded style... Such a great opportunity to get a chance to look closer. No matter how aggressive his opponent is, he simply plays in his way.

@@arijitsinha7125 They don't, it just seems like it due to the sheer amount of chinese players in table tennis. Also, I don't know how it's done in the rest of the countries, but I've been to China, and those guys do not joke with consistency drills. They could go on for hours just practicing their consistency...

Excellent video. The best way to block is to counter. You need a fraction of a second more to do it. Train to counter rather than block. With the plastic balls one needs to counter. The third ball attack is no longer an advantage. Things have changed. So the fourth ball is more important now. Also try to attack serves more. There are very few serves which can't be attacked effectively.

I think my blocking style is decent (up to a level), but Paul's technique is much more fluid, which allows him to switch between block and attack quite easily.

Blockers thrive off speed so you have to vary the pace and chop a few.
@romanosdaniel2393
@romanosdaniel2393 4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. I block a lot and I am shocked at how many players especially many who are leagues better than me I manage to beat using blocks because they just come at it with their most powerful attacks continuously. If instead the pace is varied this massively changes the game. Most people when they try to vary just vary the spin but blocking different spin is actually quite easy especially if you are used to it. Blocking various speeds however is really hard to do in my experience without leaving you completely exposed to killer shots.

Would this be effective with a long pips rubber like Curl P1r?
@Alpha-nu7xn

Not really. Curl p1r without sponge or ox may be okay, but rather is more of a long distance chopping long pimpled rubber . Tibhar grass d. Tecs maybe is a better option for blocking close to the table

Can I block low long flat balls? I’m assuming I can’t but I could be wrong.
@MrVibhas
@MrVibhas 5 жыл бұрын
If your talking about returning a slap, you have to block it (or play it in general), in front of you. If you play it anytime other than early, you are going to be fucked. I had the same problem, never could return slaps, luckily our national teams coach spotted and told me the above, and of course it worked
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can block flat attacks. It can be a bit harder, as there is less spin to work with. Stay low and try to block the ball early. If the attack is very flat, you may even need to block with a little bit of lift to clear the net.
