I had a Tortie, that appeared on our porch about half grown, during a snowy night, for 21 years. She could be deadly when being bathed, but she was the best fur baby I ever had. Only scratched the items I purchased for that purpose, which included two huge outdoor mats I kept indoors for her, and always used her litter pan. Only I and my husband were allowed near her.

I had a tortie when I was little. She was enormous, as long as I was tall when I was four, and I was a tall kid. Her name was Heaven, and she was my cat-mom. She'd lay in my crib by my feet when I was a baby, follow me around the house, and even attacked my (estranged) mother once because I was crying when she was changing my diaper because she thought that she was hurting me. She lived to be 18 and was spunky and opinionated to the very end.

Such a sweet story! ✨ Thank you for sharing, cats are truly loyal companions. I’m so glad you have fond memories with Heaven, she must’ve loved you very much. As I assume you did (and do) as well. I’m writing this because you reminded me of an incident with my (now-gone) best friend, Lizzie, who actually lived for 18 years too, until 2020. During the pandemic, my mother and I called the hairdresser we used to have at home, about 2-3 times, for dyeing but mostly cutting our hair, since we couldn’t manage that on our own. (Ironically, my mother is an epidemiologist, so she still went to work every single day and had to look decent.) Since the bathroom sink wasn’t big enough for rinsing, I used the tub, but not actually taking a shower/going inside, just having my back a bit hunched and my head leaning over. For context, as many other cats, Liz did not like water or bathing. Not even faucets turned on. She had never been bathed, except for the some very short sessions only in the very last months of her life, when she couldn’t clean herself anymore - and she made sure to let me know she hated every minute of it. But she was quite well-mannered still. Anyway, the point is that she still hadn’t made any direct contact with water at that time, being afraid and all. So, the hairdresser had comeback to see if I was doing fine on my own and if the colour came off well, at which point my furry bestie enters the scary bathroom with the water still pouring loudly over my head, taps me several times on the back with her paws just like a human being, trying a bit to “catch” my clothes with her claws, and starts meowing like an alarm just went off. Yup, she thought the poor woman - an absolute stranger to her - was harming me. And since I didn’t answer immediately / was in a very unfamiliar situation for her, she came to the rescue, old as she was, probably trying to get my mom’s attention. It was common for her to stay by my side whenever I was ill or crying, but she never had a reason to go to anyone and try to alert them. I’ll never forget that. ♥️
@Leapingspirit2 жыл бұрын
@@ioanac.1211 That's so sweet. Heaven wasn't quite so polite about her 'rescue' of me as an infant. She had never liked my mother, who was very loud and high strung, so I think this was a perfect opportunity for her to take some frustrations out and protect her new baby. That cat heard me crying and fussing (as newborns do) and came tearing into the room, scaled my mother's back with her claws out and bit down as hard as she could on the tender part of the back of her arm. When my mother flailed, she jumped off her and stood over me hissing and arching her back. She became an indoor/outdoor cat after me but had effectively claimed me as her baby. She'd bring baby rabbits, catfish, squirrels, rats, and baby blue jays home for breakfast in the mornings and leave them at the back door for us. She was a special kitty, that's for sure.
@ioanac.12112 жыл бұрын
@@Leapingspirit That is absolutely adorable. Not so pleasant for your mother, but cats are very perceptive and definitely know when something is out of the ordinary (i.e. her overall behaviour with you and Heaven, I assume). And such a sign of love and loyalty when she kept bringing you creatures! She must’ve wanted your affection and approval so much. Liz never did that (except for one time when a baby bird fell and she saw it as a plaything and brought it in the house for us, but was quite curious about the poor creature, with no apparent intention to end its life - we took care of the birdie and she was able to fly back pretty soon). I did have a lovable cat-huntress at my grandparents (in the countryside) and she did bring me mice a few times when I came to visit because I was feeding her yummy stuff, petting and smooching her all the time, even let her sleep in the bed with me (she was not an indoor cat), so I know that love language. I think it speaks volumes of how much of a bond there was between you two.
@Leapingspirit2 жыл бұрын
@@ioanac.1211 I could do anything I wanted to that cat. I could straight body slam her and she'd let me do it. She was a character though. She'd grab baby blue jays out of the pecan tree my grandparents used to have in their back yard, lay them where the parents could see them, and then get under one of their patio chairs with her tail sticking out flicking while the parents dive bombed and waited for her chance to snag one of the parents. My sweet (mean) tortie girl had so much attitude and determination. I lost her recently to lymphoma and other conditions - but even on her last day, horribly thin and full of tumours, without even the strength to lift her head, she STILL found the energy to stand up and turn her back on the vet.
@Maddie1402_2 жыл бұрын
One of my former cats had a tumor in her mouth which we didn't detect early enough, because she ran away for a week (she was pretty smart and knew that we'd take her to the vet whenever there was something wrong with her) so she only came back when there were only mere days left for her. We had the vet come to us because we didn't want to stress her any more as she was really weak and looking horrible. She was also fighting the vet to her last breath, it was horrible to watch her torment herself just to try and escape something she clearly couldn't but thinking back now - and reading what you wrote - it really did show her great spunky character up until the very end

We have a calicot, so smart that we catch on the last second from escaping through the air conditioning vent at the vet. Even the doctor was impressed "too smart for her own good 😂😂"

One of my favorite things about the girl with the dogs is that she adjusts her behavior and the appointment according to the needs of the pet. She has the intelligence to know when to push through with a pet, and when to give in and not push things.

As someone who is owned by a tortie, I can tell that my cat wouldn’t be so tolerant lol

The colour of a cat doesnt determine personality.
@leahkoffman43042 жыл бұрын
Mine wouldnt either, if it was me bathing her. But if its a groomer shes too scared to fight back and has no option but to let it happen
@leahkoffman43042 жыл бұрын
@@lotus_flower2001 well you know theres actually research done to show that most tortishell coats have a tortitude, obvs it doesnt apply to all torties but i know mine def has a very sassy face that she makes at me when she wants something. I think most tortie owners would agree. Just curious do you have a tortie?
@gutsfinky2 жыл бұрын
Sonya, the only reason I disagree with you is that I've owned a tortie cat and they are, um, unique

love Torties! they're sweet, full of personality, and just plain beautiful. one Tortie acquaintance liked perching on my shoulder; I called her a pirate kitty.

She looks so much like my Lily. I lost her last year at 13. She absolutely had a full serving of tortitude.

What a cutie!!! And yeah, as the owner of a particularly sharp tabby, Smart Cats are rarely deterred by doors of any kind 🙃 (we have to keep child-proof locks on the cat food/treats cabinet)

Oh my goodness, those WIDE scared eyes during the wash! Too cute. She did pretty well overall. Betty would not have tolerated any of that, lol. She would have gone full Wolverine for sure.

"... my last cat bath in this world." Which implies that you figure you'll still be grooming pets in an afterlife. This begs the question of which kind of afterlife you figure you're going to. 😇👿

I had a tortie and she was a sweetheart. I never knew they had a reputation until they mentioned she was one of the best behaved torti's they'd ever seen at the vet office. She lived to be 19 and was a very gentle, loving friend. RIP Sheba

I have a very rude 7lb 8 year old Tortie and she demands to be hand fluffed with a tooth brush. As you wish tiny beast of adorable sass.

Awh, what a sweetheart. I myself own a tortie and a calico. (calico is a tortie with added splotches of white) Thankfully they don't require much grooming (the disabled tortie needs her weapons trimmed regularly but that is done by a vet with assistant) so I don't need to worry about sending a groomer to their doom. Those personalities can indeed be more than a bit spicy.
