No city can exist without people and Cleveland has lost more than half its population since the 1950s.
Yet the city still boasts amazingly affordable neighborhoods, down-to-earth charm, a rich history, a stunning and varied landscape, and diverse ethnic and cultural scenes.
How can Cleveland become a destination where people flock to pursue their personal versions of the American Dream?

It's almost 4:30am and I'm just NOW finishing up this series after getting hooked way too late and needing to see where this all would go. FANTASTIC ideas. I am a lifelong Clevelander, however I live in the suburbs to the east because there isn't any good places to live downtown or just outside of it. I own several properties, including a commercial apartment building, and these videos hit the nail on the head... there's WAY too much Red Tape to do anything. Zoning needs to go away for good

@hnsbro I'd bet yo ua dollar that the reason why housing is expensive in Mountain View has more to do with legislation than with the wealth of the inhabitants. That is to say, it's not their wealth, but their tendency to use that wealth to legislate out the possibility for late-comers to join their exclusive community by way of land use regulations that makes the housing costs so high.

I was in Cleveland once. ONCE. The reisential areas were a dump, similar to broken cities in my home state, Michigan. Yep. Government works!

People blame Cleveland’s struggles on the weather. Enormous copout. It’s the lack of opportunity and MONEY. I was part of the oil boom up in Williston, North Dakota and watched people move there by the THOUSANDS for the jobs. Yes, a place as cold as North Dakota had a population spike because of the good economy. Cleveland’s lack of an economic base and failure to pivot to a modern economy after the industries of oil and steel left the city is absolutely the reason for its continued struggles.

Not only doesn't Cleveland have many business advantages, it also has about the worst climate in the lower 48. Spring, while, it can be beautiful, lasts about 2 weeks before a late frost kills the blossoms or the heat and humidity of summer sets in. Summer lasts for about 2-6 months, depending on the year. It can be incredibly hot and humid for months or rarely make it above 70. No matter what, it will rain when you are supposed to go on a picnic. We had some beautiful falls but, most of the time, it lasts three weeks before the leaves turn brown, fall off, and that's it. Then we have winter. It usually starts around Halloween and goes on until Easter. We went weeks without ever seeing the sun. There's just enough snow to make things miserable but not enough to make it fun. The weather is not only cold but it's a damp cold when it's above zero which, for some winters, isn't much of the time. If you're suicidal, don't come to Cleveland in the winter.

you are correct... real estate is about supply and demand. People forget California was once what Texas is now... but as people moved their - real estate became expensive... and when that happens people want more regulations to protect their investments. I don't know why people are so surprised at these cycles.

I was born and raised in Cleveland and I have really enjoyed this video series, along with the Stossel special on Cleveland last night. I love Cleveland and I really want to go back, but for what? I still wont earn my doctorate for a couple years so maybe my mind will change, but there's nothing in Cleveland worth staying for.

somewhere there is a compromise. the government does a crappy job on the money end of things. yes we have the best military, great highway system, public schools are free for all, etc. But since money is no object, and many have jobs that they can not lose, there is no incentive to perform better. the other extreme is corporate america paying the ceo millions, and offering the working class crumbs. In the middle will be best for all.

Awesome series Reason! Thanks Drew, it's nice to see someone with enough pride for Cleve to call out why it's so effed up. I recently moved back to Cleveland (wishing it was a good decision) so I would love for our city to once thrive again. 3 reasons I moved away.. weather, the worst traffic system and economy. My fam and friends were only reason I came back. Please ppl, let's push for these city officials or w/e to give us some freedom! This is the U.S. isn't it?

Brilliant series. I wonder though if the heavy hand of the federal government will bring even the freest places like Houston down. You can do so much on the local and state level, but until we start asserting 9th and 10th amendment sovereignty against the feds and free ourselves from the funny money (federal reserve), it doesn't matter where you run.

@valhala56 Aside from ITER, an ongoing project I'm sure you're already aware of, there is also progress with using lasers to confine and heat a hydrogen capsule inside a larger gold capsule. Can't link to it, but google "fusion laser test result" and "ITER" and you'll see what I'm taking about. I think we'll have working fusion power within the next 10 to 20 years.

I came of age in the 70's and lived near Cleveland.. the city was "happening" back then... I came back seven years ago and was stunned by how the city has shrunk. It is a virtual ghost town.. _very sad... Go Drew! Help bring it back to a time that I remember.. I time when Cleveland was cool!

While the video diplomatically blames politicians for Cleveland's problems, eventually the people who continually voted those politicians into office will need to take responsibility for their own short sightedness and self-indulgence.

You make an excellent point cities like Cleveland / Detroit need to have a vibrant city to bring in the arts and entertainment. Politicians need to let growth and expansion happen without the red tape of their holding them back with.

Houston is going down 1000 times worse then Cleveland. Note: I don't live in Cleveland nor have I ever been there. The only thing that is going to bring Cleveland back is waterfront on Great Lakes post Peak Oil. Houston on the other hand will be cooked literaly once Peak Oil gets going. No energy no AC, Houston will become Hell. Sorry but I would move away NOW if I were you.

What a dishonest video. How can they talk about Cleveland's problems without mentioning the city's astronomical crime rate? Entrepreneurs aren't going to be attracted to a city with a murder rate like Cleveland's. Of course, if they broached that topic, people might wonder why it's so dangerous (I know, I know - high taxes make people murder, rape and steal...). Also, I love how they show some old people dancing in a bar and St Patrick's Day parade goers to make people think it's a white city.

Because CA is basically Cleveland. Or maybe Cleveland is CA... Want to build something in CA expect to spend 3-6 months (minimum) getting it approved. Spend $10,000 on house before moving a piece of gravel... Don't even think about trying to build a business.

For every Cleveland and Detroit, there are the political equivalents, but economically thriving cities of Seattle, Portland OR, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City. Also, Houston has no real suburbs of any size. It has annexed virtually all of Harris County and it's city limits are currently twice the size in area than Connecticut. If Cleveland had the ability to annex it's suburbs and neighboring land the way Houston has, I don't think we'd be watching this video right now.

The Cleveland metro area's population remained flat since the 1950 census. Cleveland itself lost half of its population from 1950 to 2010.

Other rich nations encouraged the US to be the world's policeman to ease their own military spending. They took that money and spent it on their - infrastructure - schools - healthcare... which when you check it out the US does not rank in the top 10 in any of those.
